As you turn around, you see one of the top pro heroes, Gang Orca, standing and waiting to be served. You’ve seen pictures and heard stories about him, but you have never seen the man in person and you can’t help but admire him. He is huge, easily towering above your small form, with defined muscles that you can see even through the well tailored suit he wears. His eyes are red and gazing at you as if he expects you to recoil from his appearance.

“I’m sorry, I didn’t mean to stare,” you smile genuinely, “what can I get for you today?”

He seems slightly surprised by your quick recovery and politeness, and his face relaxes a bit. “Just a simple black coffee for me, thank you.”

You give a nod and turn as you begin to prepare his coffee, humming slightly to yourself as you work.

“I was surprised to find this cafe still open at this hour. Are you the only one working tonight?”

You sigh as you turn to glance back at him. “Yeah, I am. My coworker bailed on me.”

The very first time you laid your eyes upon the house, you were certain that you had lucked out.

It’s tall and imposing, and seems to lean slightly forward as though it’s hunching with old age. The wooden steps leading up to the weathered porch are splintered and rotted, the shingles of the roof are thin and broken, and one of the windows in the downstairs sitting room has been smashed (probably by a group of overzealous, rebellious teenagers).

“It’s beautiful!” You murmur, enamored with the greenery sprouting whimsically out of the gutters lining the roof. You’re so distracted by the house’s wild charm that you miss the nervous sweating of the realtor, and the anxious glances he keeps throwing into all the dark corners of every room you’re in.

That initial sense of wonder and charm… ended up fading pretty quickly. It’s not the worst house, by any means. You know for a fact that, all things considered, you actually got pretty lucky with it. The current market for houses is terrible, everyone says so! So the fact that you managed to land a beautiful period home, fixer-upper or not, in a quiet neighborhood (read: inconveniently far away from the nearest town) for way below market value should be nothing short of a miracle, especially for a first-time buyer who had barely fulfilled the basic requirements for a mortgage.

It should be.

But you begin to come to the slow, certain conclusion that the house… isn’t quite right.

The wild, overgrown nature of the house and garden loses its charm when it comes time for you to single-handedly tear up the needle-leaved weeds that have begun to grow in every crevice of the garden path, leaving your hands torn and bleeding. The secluded location, which you had first delighted over as being peaceful and quiet, soon becomes intimidatingly isolated. As summer rolls to a close and the bleakness of winter begins to stretch before you, the lush greenery surrounding the house begins to wither and brown. The evenings get shorter as darkness begins to roll in earlier and earlier, and before you know it October is drawing to a close. Things are going well for you. Really, they are. Work is good, you’re managing the commute to town better than you had initially expected, and the process of fixing up the run-down and broken bits of the house is going pretty smoothly.

The thing is, the thing that you really don’t like to admit to yourself, is that you seem to be having trouble… settling into your new home. Even after three months there, it’s an adjustment to be suddenly living on your own after so many years sharing apartments with polite and detached flatmates. You’re going through an adjustment period. That’s all.

That’s what you tell yourself late at night, when you’re lying in bed wrapped up in your duvet and staring fixedly at the broad white expanse of the ceiling in the dark. You’re adjusting. It’s not strange to have difficulty sleeping in a new, strange environment! The fact that the problem has been persisting for months now is something you try not to think about; you’re adjusting, that’s all.

You’re working on fueling the engines when the alarm begins to blare, almost deafening you with how loud they are. It takes you a long second to place the sound before realizing that it’s the emergency alarm for an electrical failure, something that strikes you as weird. The captain had only just ordered a ship wide inspection just a week ago, and everything had come up clear.

You quickly begin to make your way to the door while you can still see, fully intending to go and help fix whatever issue there is. But you run into Keigo Takami right at the doorway, a fellow crewmate who joined the crew months ago along with his mysterious friend simply known as Dabi. They had taken a liking to you instantly, helping you with your tasks and simply chatting to you for hours about your life and interests. Despite pushing them to reveal more about themselves, they never did, choosing to simply redirect the conversation back to you.

Keigo smiles at you and grabs your arm, leading you out the door and away from the hallway to Electrical.

“Wait, don’t we need to fix that?” You ask in confusion, looking at Keigo for an answer.

“Nah, I saw Blue walking that way to fix it. Nothing to be worried about, little bird.” He begins taking you down several corridors, passing other crew members in various states of confusion.
