Steve Randle is an important character. People calling Steve an unimportant character are very wrong. One reason Steve is an important character is because Steve is the only person Sodapop can rely on to talk about his problems. Now people could argue Soda could rely on Ponyboy and / or Darrel, but their fights are often the main cause of his problems. This is stated in the book as Pony and Darrels fights cause Sodapop to be the middle man and stress him out. Which is where Steve comes in. Sodapop can't rely on Two-bit cause he's always drunk, joking, and can't really, in that sense, take things seriously, while Sodapop wouldn't want to bother Johnny with this as Johnny is quiet and faces his own problems, and as the reader we have no clue Sodapops relationship with Dallas but Dallas as a person is unreliable. Which only leaves Steve and Sodapops best friend for him to confind in. Steve also is apart of the gangs found family. This is where the reader can infer that he plays a more important role in The Outsiders' charecters life that just isn't showcased. The reader can infer this because Sodapop was just friends with Steve he wouldn't be a part of the found family in The Outsiders. As Dallas, Two-bit, and Johnny wouldn't know him / know him well. And Ponybky would hate him even more because of the way Steve treats him. And from this, Steve wouldn't be a part of The Outsiders' found family. But if you put the pieces together, why would be be accepting into this if not important to the other characters besides Sodapop in one way or another? Steve is, therefore, just not explored enough for people to care about him. Know that people may argue that, for example, Steve is barely mentioned and, therefore, is just not important. That is false. As previously stated, Steve is Sodapops' support system and important to the rest of the gang because he is in their found family for a reason. Now, digging deeper into that. Without Sodapops' support system of Stebe randle, he would essentially shut off, which would cause a domino effect of Ponyboy and Darrel shutting off because of their brothers problems. Which would essentially lead to the rest of the gang. Two-bit would effectively not be as happy and bright, while Dallas would be more focused on other things with his friends emotionally gone, leaving Johnny to follow Dallas. And then if Steve just fell through and didn't exist in The Outsiders, Sodapop would not be the same charecter and be more a loner which would effect his brothers personalities and therfore the others aswell, etc. We already went through this. In conclusion, Steve Randle is an important character.
