noah had never been as over something as he was over this “countryside vacation,” which meant spending a month in the hottest section of the south of the country doing essentially nothing, for the sake of his parents and their totally chill relationship post-divorce. but there was a reason he chose to stay with his mom, and he couldn't see the logic in making him spend his vacation in the spot he actively chose not to be.

truthfully, there were plenty of reasons, and the near-unbearable heat wasn't even one of the bigger. being around his dad, a macho rough-at-the-edges type, was a constant reminder of the fact he'd never get to have a good, close relationship with him. noah knew of his more delicate, introspective ways, and he knew big-shot waylon-the-cowboy didn't expect that from his son. besides being terrible at the cowboy thing, spending time with his dad meant being reminded of the disappointment he was for the man, even if he'd never said it.

so, when his dad knocked on his bedroom's door and suggested a trip to a lake, he nodded, smiled, and waited until the man was await to bitterly sigh. he wasn't desperate for his dad's approval — he was coming to terms with the fact he'd likely never get it. he wanted a son who could match his virility, and noah just wasn't that. it just sucked, going through something he didn't enjoy to make the guy happy and knowing he'd never be truly satisfied. oh, well. one more week and he's home.

he marks the page he was reading, and makes his way down the stairs, watching as the man prepares to leave. “you've gone to this lake before, sir? know how far is it?” he asks, putting on his shoes, and wondering about how long the horse ride would be.
