You stare at the screen, blank-faced and rather moody as you slump further in your seat.

Your parents can't be bothered to nag at your long face, and even if they did you wouldn't have listened anyway. It's not unusual for you to act up at an event you were unwillingly dragged to, especially when the said event was meant to celebrate the achievements of your ever-perfect older sister while you played the part of the black sheep of the family.

But you suppose completing her PhD at only twenty-six years old was a highly impressive feat that you couldn't even put be a Debby downer towards. Haerin worked hard and you witnessed all of her hard work with your own eyes. From pulling all-nighters and scheduling excessive meetings with her mentor—she's done everything at the top of her game, and it clearly paid off when her published works were used and praised by top universities across the world.

So when she walks up to the podium, back straight and a smile as wide as she was taught to have, you can't help but think how pretty damn cool she was. Even if you were begrudgingly compared to her every waking moment of your life.

Haerin is the poster image of elegance when she adjusts the collar of her blouse right before she beams at the crowd in front of her. When she skims the crowd, you briefly see her eyes rest on your family and that's when your mother decides to flail her arms around to catch her attention.

You sink further, burning at the embarrassment of suddenly being on the big screen. It's an odd look, you nearly scowling while your parents smile brightly in pride. You try to fix your face, but it's to no avail when you realise that you'll always look like a raging bitch no matter how hard you try.

When she speaks, her voice is smooth as honey and crystal as clear waters.

"Good afternoon to the dean, fellow academics, graduates and honourable guests," she recites gracefully with impeccable precision, never once looking down to her script.

You hear your mother choke on a sob as you try not to roll your eyes at her dramatics.

"It's an absolute honour to be standing on this stage and giving this speech to people that I've looked up to throughout my academic journey," she says, beaming to the Professor that helped her through her PhD who stands next to her before she's taking another deep breath.

"Often, we look up to people who have numerous awards and recognition under their name," she smiles, "But we tend to forget that these people—like me, and like you—are simply humans ..."

You know what Haerin is saying is probably some phenomenal, philosophical concept that has people oohing and ahhing alike, but you really couldn't be bothered to hear her wax poetic. After all, philosophy was her forte after she's dedicated her twenties to studying that field of study.

She says people clap, some cry, it's an average day witnessing Haerin's impact. You're more than used to seeing her be celebrated like she was a God amongst mere mortals, so used that you don't even notice the person that slides into the seat next to you.

"You look bored."

You blink, barely catching yourself as you turn your head to the source of the voice.

The words get stuck in your throat when you finally acknowledge your new guest, lips tilted slightly upwards as he levels you with an amused smile.

"I'm not," you say as you clear your throat, "Just tired."

"So, bored," he chuckles.

"At least I got here on time," you snap back, mostly in embarrassment at being called out.

Yoongi shoots you an unimpressed look before he's turning back to focus his attention on your sister who's still gathering her applause like it was nothing.

"You know I had a shift at the ER," he says pointedly.

"Yeah. So don't nag at me for things that are out of my control, okay?" you say with a roll of your eyes.

Yoongi smirks to himself before shaking his head.

"You're in a mood," he muses.

"Why wouldn't I be?" you mutter under your breath as you fold your arms across your chest. "I have to watch my older sister collect awards left and right like Thanos collects his infinity stones. How do you think I'd live up to that?"

Yoongi laughs, a little louder than you'd expected as you spot an elderly lady who glares at him. Your parents are way too focused on recording Haerin from every angle possible to greet your new guest so they don't even notice the sound coming from him.

Yoongi stays silent for a beat before he turns to you, face neutral as you shift nervously in your seat at the fact that you'd likely overshared.

"It's whatever, I'm just jo—"

"You don't have to live up to that," he finally says.

You blink, slowly turning your head to see Yoongi shrugging at you with an unreadable expression.

He's always been a little hard to understand, but he was understanding. You suppose you'd take what you could get.

"Easy for you to say," you snort, "You don't have a legacy to live up to."

"No, I don't," he grins, "But I know you."

You narrow your eyes at him as he gives you a reassuring look as if he was able to explain to you how he truly knew you.

Frankly, you didn't doubt him. Yoongi was one of the few people in your life who stuck around despite your erratic tendencies, or even when you were brattier than usual. Though you'd really like to attribute it to the fact that he was a nice person in general, or that he cared about you—you knew why he stayed as long as he did.

And that thought sends a bitter expression on your face.

"I don't think you do," you mumble, focusing back onto the stage where your sister seems to collect her umpteenth award for the day.

Yoongi doesn’t respond. The cheers grow louder, and you suppose Haerin had said something sensational once again when the audience stands up to give her a standing ovation. You wish you could feel bad that you missed out on the latter part of your speech, but you knew that people like her didn’t rely on luck to receive recognition. It was just her.

So, you stand up, plaster a tight smile that hides the inhibition that ferments in your chest and let the claps drown your thoughts.

Haerin smiles, and she looks as beautiful as ever. You look away.

Back-burner | 02

“You made it!” Haerin’s voice is bell-like when she spots Yoongi hovering behind your parents who have already doused her in hugs and congratulations.

“Of course I did,” he returns with a roll of his eyes, but even then, his arms immediately reach out to wrap around her petite frame.

You force yourself to glance away when his eyes grow soft as she beams up at him with her charming smile.

“I know the hospital gets really busy this time—”

“Stop,” he sighs, shaking his head good-naturedly while you’re essentially forced to absorb their conversation like an outsider; stomach unsettled when her giggles melt perfectly along with his own laugh. “This is an important day for you. I’d never miss out on this.”

You’d like to think that you were relatively good at shielding your emotions. You survived twenty-two years by suppressing the anger that bubbled for whatever reason because Haerin was out there achieving greatness. When you were in a household that only valued excellence, anything but that was sourly shoved aside.

But now, your face is tight. Tighter than usual, at least. It’s to a point that your mother sends you a scowl, a warning in her eyes when she looks over at you.

Don’t ruin this for Haerin, it says.

Before you can excuse yourself, your father’s resounding voice cuts through the atmosphere.

“Yoongi’s always taking good care of you, Haerin,” he says fondly, smoothing a hand over your sister’s hair while her eyes grow into crescents at his statement.

“He is,” she agrees softly.

“It’s nothing,” Yoongi chuckles, pulling away so your sister can fully settle into the embrace of her father while he smiles proudly at her.

You wonder what it’s like. To have eyes on you like you’ve hung the stars in the sky.

Instead, your eyes drift to the dirt beneath you.

“He’d be a good husband,” your mother whispers, nudging Haerin as her face flushes in mortification.

You bite your tongue, swallowing the bile that threatens to spill out of your throat at the idea.

It wasn’t a new one, but it’s one that you can never grow used to. Not when it was so possible, and so expected. It’s only a harsh reminder that whatever you were feeling would always be shielded anyway. Especially when it wasn’t your emotion to feel, to express.

Not when Haerin and Yoongi were the pair made in heaven.

“Mom!” she hisses, right before offering Yoongi an apologetic smile.

He doesn’t even bat an eye. He simply smiles at her, shrugging his shoulders as if it didn’t bother him. You nearly scoff because it definitely didn’t. Why would that bother him? Haerin was perfect. It makes perfect sense.

They were perfect for each other.

Your voice gets stuck in your throat, and it’s commonplace that you’ve yet to utter a single word in Haerin’s presence. The limelight is always on the one that offers substance, not the one misguided and misdirected. You don’t mind the disregard; you were used to it.

But the tenderness in Yoongi’s gaze is hard to get used to.

“Anyway,” she coughs, shaking your father’s grip off before she’s grinning widely at you. “You’re here too!”

Haerin has always been kind.

She’s someone that all sorts of parents use as a role model for their own kids. Study hard so you can be as intelligent as Haerin. Mind your manners so you can be as classy as Haerin. Do this, do that—so you can be like Haerin.

It was you that held the animosity.

“Of course,” you mumble, offering her a small smile that doesn’t quite reach your eyes before she’s tumbling into your chest.

You’re taller, but that never negates her presence. The way she takes up space in all the right ways, with her brightness and her charm that could captivate anyone.

You had the height, but you were only half the person Haerin could ever be.

“Thank you for coming,” she whispers, grabbing onto your shoulder when she nuzzles her face into the crook of your neck.

“Why wouldn’t I,” you mutter, stiffly patting her back.

“You’re busy, I know.” You nearly roll your eyes because she was the one with a PhD. Not you.

“Not really,” you concede, and you note the bored expressions that mark your parents’ face.

You don’t even want to see what Yoongi thinks.

Haerin pulls away just enough to shoot you another smile. You wonder what it’s like to truly look so happy all the time. You suppose when you don’t have to pretend it’s much easier to smile the way Haerin does.

“You’re working with grassroots aren’t you?” she asks cheerily, and you’re mildly surprised that she remembered.

“Uh, yeah but—”

“Haerin! We want some pictures out front of you!” Your mother interjects, immediately pulling your sister away as she yelps at the sudden force.

Your face returns to its stoic state, not the least bit surprised that your parents were disinterested in hearing your involvement in grassroots. It wasn’t the elite thing to do. They always made a stern reminder to you to keep their names out of the loop when you were working with activists across districts.

So when Haerin offers you a pout and an apologetic expression, you only shrug before you’re pulling away yourself.

Your parents don’t shoot you another glance before they’re dragging Haerin away, animatedly discussing her offers from top firms that valued her publications.

Only then, do you remember that Yoongi still remains silent. It’s almost humiliating that he’s witnessed that exchange, but it’s nothing he hasn’t seen before. And you know that he’s witnessed the worst moments, but the reminder never failed to sting.

It’s because the light shines so bright on Haerin that he may just get lost in your darkness.

“That’s cool.”

His voice interjects just as you turn on your heel, stopping you from moving any further as your eyes rest on the path before you.

You don’t say anything, and he takes that as his cue to continue.

“Haerin always tells me about what you do,” he says, walking up to your side until he’s directly in front of you that you can’t ignore his presence. When you look up, Yoongi still looks monotone, but his eyes are still kind. And they’re trained on you. “You’re a driven person.”

That makes you scoff.

“You’re really going to tell me that after you just saw my sister receive her PhD?” you say dryly.

He frowns. “That doesn’t make you any less driven of a person.”

You note that he doesn’t even compare you to her. It sends a warm feeling to your stomach.

But reality hits, and you suppose it’s because you couldn’t compare yourself to Haerin when she was in a league of her own.

“You don’t need to comfort me, okay?” you sigh, “I’m used to it. My parents love what Haerin does and it doesn’t bother me. In fact, it’s easier to get away with working with activists when they aren’t all up in my business anyway.”

Your words earn a small twitch from Yoongi’s lips, and you’re wondering what he finds so funny.

You realise that Yoongi tends to find a lot of the things you say amusing. You weren’t even that much of a funny person. You were far more boring than your sister, so you genuinely wonder what runs through his mind.

Before you can pose the question, he shrugs with a gentle shake of his head.

“I’m not comforting you,” he says pointedly, raising a brow at you when you snort at him.

“Could’ve fooled me with the unwarranted pity party you were throwing me with your eyes,” you say, narrowing your gaze at him.

Yoongi laughs, shoulder shaking before he peers down at you with his cheeks rounded in amusement. You hate that your heart still stutters in your chest even after everything you’ve witnessed. Even when you vividly picture how right his arms looked around your sister.

“I called you driven and now it’s a pity party?” he laughs, hand reaching out to squeeze your shoulder as you nearly jump at the contact. “You really need to fix your comprehension skills.”

It’s light-hearted, and you’re used to Yoongi poking fun at you. You were virtually the only person you’ve ever seen him truly joking with, not even with your sister.

Haerin was more mellowed down, less crass than you were. So the time for jokes was, well, there were definitely jokes but you don’t think (or know) if she and Yoongi have laughed until they cried.

You know you have, but you don’t sign off that possibility. There were things that Haerin and Yoongi did in private that you never allow yourself to indulge in.

Your heart would never survive.

“Maybe you’re just bad at getting things across,” you retort.

He smiles. “Maybe. But I meant what I said.”

“I fail to see how me working grassroots who have volunteers from all over makes me driven,” you mumble.

Yoongi stares at you a second longer than you anticipated. And you find yourself squirming under his gaze.

His eyes are always intense, even when you know that there was no malice underneath his irises. Yoongi was naturally just an all-in person that made it very hard to breathe around him. Especially when you knew that he was observant and could pick apart almost what anyone was thinking.

Sometimes, you were terrified that he saw right through your emotions.

“People have different modes of transport in getting to where they belong in life,” he says.

You blink, furrowing your eyebrows at him, confused. “What?”

He glances to the side, stuffing his hands into his pocket as a small smile appears on his usually blank face.

He looks stunning this way, jaw chiselled and emphasised by the natural light and the way that his forehead remains exposed with his hair styled back. It’s devastating, but you can’t help but stare.

“We all have different starting points and different endpoints,” he says matter-of-factly, “Some people are good drivers—so they take cars. Metaphorically, at least.”

“Yoongi, what are you even saying,” you deadpan.

He ignores you and continues.

“Some people don’t feel comfortable driving, so they take buses, or bicycles, or even go by foot. Or have people drive them places.” His voice is smooth when he carries forward, and you’re still lost at the point he’s attempting to make. You wonder if this is the influence of Haerin’s philosophical knowledge.

“Different modes of transport means taking different routes. A car can’t travel in water, and a plane can’t park in a garage—they all essentially serve their own purpose effectively in the medium that they were made to serve it in.”

You’ve always known Yoongi to be extremely introspective, but you’ve never heard him wax poetic about transportation vehicles before.

But as always, you listen. You always do, especially if it’s him that’s speaking.

Finally, he looks at you, and your heart nearly lurches out of your chest when his eyes soften at your gaping expression.

“Point is, we’re all driving to our own destination points, and each journey is unique to each person,” he says softly as your breath hitches.

“But I’m no Haerin,” you mumble quietly, finally speaking and finally understanding what Yoongi was getting at.

“You aren’t,” he concedes as you feel your heart drop. But he picks it up immediately with his reassuring grin and the hand that smoothes over your hair comfortingly. “You don't have to be.”

You feel your cheeks grow warm, and you hope he doesn’t notice.

“So don’t knock yourself down just because you’re heading in a different direction than she is,” he says, “You’re driven. And you’re doing great in what you do. That’s all that matters.”

When he looks at you once more, eyes honest and pure with his hand resting over your head—

You realise that Yoongi does know you.

But perhaps, it isn’t enough.

The Geraldson Group’s Research and Development department is a joke -  at least, the work you do there is. When you were offered the job, you thought it would be more than fetching coffee and making copies. Of course, you were expecting petty errands to be included in your job description, you just didn’t think it would begin and end there.

You lean against the table and watch coffee drip into the pot as it brews. Lucas stands beside you, arms crossed and face just as blank as yours. The scent overtakes your numb mind, charging it with idle energy. In both your majors, research was the foundation of every project and paper. You spent four years working towards a job like this and all your hard work is squandered over coffee.

“Oh, look,” Lucas unenthusiastically says, “two drops fell at once.”

“I’ll alert the media.”

six.

Jungkook didn’t know what came over him to land himself in this position. She was over to pick up her things and he helped her too.

It was painfully slow. Seeing so much of himself in her, in her things; the memories were all too painful, but the two of them quietly packed everything.

He offered her coffee after they were done. They were in the kitchen, still quiet, their throats clogged with everything they want to say and with every memory they relived in just one afternoon.

“I… uh… I guess I should go,” she had said.

Jungkook nodded but the two stared with both lips bitten.

It happened all too fast. Her leaving her cup on the counter and rushing towards him. Him standing straight, one arm still hanging on to his own cup while the other was open to receive her.

Everything always felt right with her. The way she touched him was as if she was an extension of himself—like she always belonged to him.

She kissed him roughly, as if to physically feel the hurt of everything happening within the two of them.

Jungkook isn’t proud of it, but he doesn’t regret it either.

You walked in when they were just done, apparently. She falls down, her elbow accidentally hitting the coffee table across the couch and he scrambled to find a cover… but who has cover sheets in the living room?

Your eyes widen seeing the two completely naked people in front of you.

“I… I… Should I come back later?” you ask, turning around and scrunching your eyes closed.

Should you come back later? Of course, you should! You little shit, they’re both literally naked in front of you, get a hint!

“Uh…” Jungkook looks in between you and her.

“No, no, it’s fine. I was just about to leave.”

“Are you sure?” Jungkook asks.

She gave him a nod and headed over to the kitchen to redress herself. Jungkook followed her and did the same. During this time, you closed the door and waited outside, leaning against the wall opposite the front door and the boxes you had put down.

She came out first and gave you an apologetic smile, “I’m… I’m really sorry.”

“You have nothing to apologise for,” you shrug, “you didn’t do anything wrong.”

Jungkook is behind her now, holding the door open.

“I guess it’s goodbye then,” she smiles turning to look at him and you walk forward, standing next to her but with a little distance.

Jungkook looks at her with a sad smile and takes a deep breath, “Yea, I guess it is.”

He looks away and she takes that chance to walk herself to the elevator. Once she entered and the elevator doors closed, you took a step forward and embraced Jungkook.

He doesn’t cry this time, but he lets himself be held. He takes deep breaths while you rub his back.

“You wanna talk about it?”

“I don’t think there’s much to say,” he gets out of your grasp, “it just… happened and…”

“It’s okay. You’re still hurt and she’s familiar comfort.”

He sighed, “Yea.”

“So!” you walked past him and into the apartment, “this is where you live, huh?”

“You’re acting like you haven’t been here before,” he laughed, bending down to bring the two boxes you brought inside to the apartment.

“It’s been months, man,” you sit on his couch.

“You probably shouldn’t sit on that…” Jungkook says with his back to you as he puts the boxes on a chair at the dining area.

“Why… Oh, fuck!” you jumped up and ran to where Jungkook was, “You should’ve told me that before I sat down!”

Jungkook giggled and sat next to the chair holding the boxes while you sat opposite to him.

“So, what have you done to the things you’re not bringing over?” he asks while crossing his legs.

“Most of them are sold actually.”

“You managed to sell all that shit in a week?” his body arches forward in surprise.

“I had to sell them for cheap prices and begged some of my friends too,” you scrunch your eyes, remembering all the phone calls you had to make the past week, “I actually forgot what a hassle moving really is. My mum did most of the work last time.”

Jungkook chuckled, “Why does it feel like I’m watching you grow up?”

You point an accusatory finger at him, “No, stop that. You do that shit every time I make grown decisions.”

“Do what?” he asks teasingly.

“Acting like you’re my dad or something,” you whine, “we’re literally the same age!”

“I’m older than you by nearly two years! You should respect me more,” he smiles with his shoulders high.

“Respect my ass,” you roll your eyes.

“I will say, you have a splendid ass,” he mulls it over, “I would never disrespect.”

You throw the nearby tissue box at him and he catches it with a grin.

Jungkook then shows you to your room and you start arranging all the things you brought. They were mostly clothes, utensils and some decorations, including the pictures.

You arrange your clothes in the closet already provided in the room and then moved to the kitchen to place your own utensils among his.

When you were more or less done, the two of you were back at the dining table.

“I have a few more things to sort out but I think I’ll be done by Monday and can move in then,” you say, sipping the coffee he made for you.

“Sounds good. Not sure how long I’ll be out that day, but you have the keys so it should be fine.”

It was not fine because the minute you open the front door, you’re greeted with an all too similar scenario.

Jungkook shuffling and a woman falling over.

Not just any woman, his ex, again.

“Oh, not the couch again!” you whine.

And it repeats several times, actually. It was like they downgraded from a relationship to friends with benefits, and it was weird. You know how much they had loved each other and you know how difficult it was for Jungkook to even break up with her in the first place. So, why?

At one point you got used to it, her company being something you’ve grown accustomed to and comfortable with. You never questioned Jungkook about it either because… well, she was always there.

“So… it sounds like they’re still in a relationship or something,” Taehyung says.

Jungkook is late for your last-minute dinner plan, and you can only guess who is currently holding him up. But you took the opportunity to lament about the situation.

“Right? Right? I mean I don’t mind it ‘cuz she’s not a bad person to be with, but like… why would he still…” your sentence couldn’t complete itself as Jungkook walked in to the diner.

You quickly changed the topic of conversation to which Jungkook joined in when he sat next to you.

A few more weeks pass by and Jungkook’s situationship continues. You tried your best to ignore it again albeit the confusion still remains.

Until one day you came back home to the two of them yelling at each other. Unsure of what was going on, you tried to pacify the two of them and send her home.

“I don’t know what her problem is,” he huffs as you close the front door.

“What was that about?”

“She wanted me to come to her friend’s wedding as a date and I told her I couldn’t because I have work… and she got mad? Like shit, we aren’t even in a relationship anymore!” he complains.

“Then what are you guys? I mean she practically lives here, almost like you guys are in a relationship.”

“I… I don’t know,” he sighs, “it just feels right with her, you know? I couldn’t help…”

Jungkook was only telling you half the truth. He wants to scream it out, that he was afraid. He was afraid he made the wrong decision in letting her go, so he wanted her at arm’s length. Not too close, but still reachable.

He feels shitty. He was being selfish because of his own fear and insecurity.

“Jungkook,” you start, “you can’t do that to yourself or to her.”

Jungkook knows this too. He knows it was wrong, but it felt so good having her stay next to him. It felt good having her hold him when he needs to be held, so he held on to that feeling to chase out everything else.

But what began to replace the fear was the all too familiar guilt. That he was using her, and that he was going to regret it soon.

And it’s also when he realised, he never thought he loved her again. He was just obsessed with the idea of having the familiarity. Because he felt like he wouldn’t be able to find it again; like he wouldn’t be able to be loved or to love again.

Until the two of them broke again.

This isn’t lover either, anyway.

Jungkook sighs, “I know. It’s just… it’s all too much and I just want the comfort I once had.”

“These feelings are important; you should let yourself feel them instead of avoiding them and pretending that everything is alright. You’re strong, this won’t break you.”

“What if… what if I never find a relationship like that again? What if this was my last shot and I ruined it?” he digs his face into his hands and you sigh.

“I’m sure it won’t be, and hey, if all comes to worse, we still have that married by 40 deal we made,” you grin.

He chuckled, “Right.”

You give him a small smile and walk to sit on the couch.

“Uhhh… you probably shouldn’t sit on that….” he scratches his head.

“OH, what the fuck! You have a literal bed in your room!”

UNREAL

You spent the next day cleaning the mansion, wandering into each and every vacancy that it had to offer. By the time you finished, you were drained out of your energy, sweat dripping down your forehead. Not only was this family rich, but it seemed to be that they preferred to look after the house themselves instead of hiring servants.

Checking your phone, it was 12:01 pm, it was time to eat lunch. You weren't really the type of person to eat 3 meals a day, that is until you met Seokjin. He made sure you stayed healthy and ate all that is needed to keep your body up and running. Jin was able to change a bad habit of yours, and you really should think about thanking him one day.

"I'm back" You excitedly said as you walked over to the grave, a basket in hand. "I finished cleaning the place, by the way. And since I have nothing to do-" Placing the case on the ground, you crouched to its level and laid out a blanket to sit on a few meters away from the grave. "I thought maybe I should eat out here. I hope you don't mind"

You stayed there for a few minutes, eating the food you prepared for yourself whilst scanning the area. They really did own a beautiful place, regardless of how shady they may seem. There were a lot of flowers, and since you were in charge of keeping the place clean there's a big possibility that you also had to water them. "Hmm" You hummed, looking at the small patch of roses far behind the daisies. "You guys must really like daisies to plant this many"

"To be honest" You turned to look at the words engraved on the stone. "I prefer carnations. I've never owned any but I plan to put some for decoration when I open my store"

Sitting down and eating lunch out of the open felt nice, especially when the sun wasn't beating down on you too hard, the temperature was also alright, a few breezes here and there but it felt refreshing. "I can't remember the last time I took a day off, this feels nice"

Settling your __ juice in the basket, you yawned, laying down against the soft fabric of the blanket. After cleaning for hours you felt exhausted, you haven't cleaned that much in a while. Considering you had nothing else to do for the rest of the day, you closed your eyes, and slowly drifted to sleep.

Jungkook watched from afar with curious eyes, a smile forming on his lips once he realized you had fallen asleep. He slowly crept forward, each step crushing the grass under his feet. The man sat beside your unconscious body, eyes lingering a little too long on your lips before he composed himself. He shouldn't get attached to you.

After all, you were sent here by the old couple to devour. He wasn't a human, nor was he exactly dead. Jungkook was a demon who had cursed their family for over 8 generations. He didn't feel any remorse as he chewed off of their flesh, but once you set foot into his domain he visibly softened.

Never had he before seen a beauty like yourself, one that easily lured him and made him feel.. human. The emotions he felt bubbling in his stomach only grew as he closely watched you. Making food for yourself, talking to the stone as if his body was buried underneath, genuinely cleaning his property. It all didn't make sense to him, why were you trying so hard to fill in a job that nobody would praise you of?

Nobody was around to make sure you worked, the old couple didn't even bother to set up cameras to make sure you did as you were told. You didn't have to do anything. Yet here you were, laying down ever so elegantly before him. Words couldn't explain how he felt right at this second.

You were so close, he could choose to kill you now and treat you as one of his offerings like the others. But no, not now, not when you seemed so different from the rest. He needed to know more about you, needed to know why you were so alluring to him.

"How strange" Jungkook mumbled, stroking your cheek with his hand, his body towering over you as he laid on his side next to yours. He kept playing with your hair, loving the smell that it gave off. To his surprise, he felt you rubbing your cheeks closer to his palm, causing the boy to instantly freeze while both his ears and cheeks reddened.

Jungkook thought of moving his hand away and give you space, but once his hands retracted you furrowed your brows. He couldn't bring himself to pull back when you so desperately searched for his warmth. Jeon was in charge of everything that sets foot on his property, but he'll make an exception for you.

He moved himself up until he was just above where you laid, with delicate fingers he lifted your head and placed it on his lap, where he continued to admire your face. What was it that made him act differently towards you?

Was it your personality? Your kindness? Or your appearance. Jungkook didn't know what he felt, the only thing he knew for certain is that he didn't want to kill you. For now, at least. It would be a waste to get rid of something that may be of use to him.

Use.

A word he described you in his head, he didn't like the sound of that. Why didn't he like the sound of using you? Why does guilt suddenly grow in the pit of his stomach just for thinking of that? Why did you make him feel as if all he wanted to do to you was hold you close?

"I need to breathe." Jungkook sighed, pinching the bridge of his nose in annoyance. Everything about you, everything that you are made his legs weak. And he knew what that meant, knew what it will cause if he continued to be easily lured in. But was it too much to ask for love for a demon who has been lonely ever since he opened his eyes?

"Jimin" Jin continued, clicking his tongue at his friend. "You live in the same town as the Jeon family, right? Can you please just do me this one favor, I'm worried sick here!"

"It really depends on what it is" Jimin moved his phone to the other ear, drying his hair. "I'm busy this week so whatever this is then I'm not sure if I could help"

"It's important" The male sighed from the other side of the device. He had been worried about you ever since the call ended, it startled him and he didn't even notice the call ended until he realized you didn't bother to reply to his rant on how dangerous everything was. "How important can it be to the point you call me in the middle of my shower?"

"You know how I mentioned the Jeon family?" Jin muttered, which Jimin hummed in reply. "My friend's supposed to look after that place, and she's all alone there and is supposed to be alone for the rest of the month"

The psychic paused, having to double-take everything until he quickly dropped the towel. "Are you sure? I've never heard of the Jeon family hiring anybody for the past decade"

"THAT'S THE PROBLEM!" Jin screamed. "What if she's in trouble right now? I need you to check on her I don't care when but at least drop by at some point and tell me if she's okay or not!"

"It's going to take me at least 15 minutes to get where she is. But I'll see if I could make time. In fact, I might go right after this call, the Jeon family has a really bad history with the town so I'm worried about her safety as well"

Seokjin stayed silent for a few seconds, tapping away into his computer as he looked at multiple articles regarding the said family. "What makes their family so popular for rumors anyway? Are some of them true?"

"I can't say," Jimin sighed, shrugging his shirt on. "There's not much information that I know about them but I'm sure one rumor is correct"

"And which one is that?"

"The one where their family has been cursed by a negative entity, Jeon Jungkook. A demon who was told to bring many fortunes, if you give sacrifices. Pretty sure I overheard people down the street talk about how they also had a son named after him or something. Not too sure"

Meanwhile, you woke up to the sound of rustling. Startled, you sat up only to see a black bunny hop towards you, its nose twitching. "A bunny?" You mumbled, eyeing the animal as it stopped, it was as if the two of you were communicating within the silence.

Before you were about to speak, it dashed away, disappearing behind the many flowers that covered the field. "Wait-" You sighed, feeling a little down that you weren't able to pet the cute bunny.

Standing up, you gathered the rest of the stuff that you left laid out, neatly folding the blanket and placing it back inside the basket. As you were about to leave the area, you noticed over to the right, a decent amount of carnations. They weren't there before, were they?

There's no way you could have missed such beautiful flowers, but then again you have been entering and leaving this garden without looking around properly. You approached the pink flowers in awe. "So beautiful"

You thought of sticking around longer to explore more of the places you've ignored but was interrupted by the sound of someone's voice from the front of the mansion. "Anyone home!?"

In a hurry, you got up and ran inside the house, locking the door behind you and leaving the basket on the top of the counter. "I'm coming!" You shouted, walking over to the door that was a few feet away from where you were. As you passed by some shoe racks, your shirt gets caught, you stopped in your tracks to try and pry your clothes away but were unsuccessful. It was like the house didn't want you to answer the door.

"Give me a second!" You yelled once more, giving it your best pull. Finally, the shirt snatched back, and you were able to open the door just in time before the person decides to go away. "I'm sorry for the wait, my shirt was stuck and I had trouble fixing it"

"That's alright" The man with silver hair beamed, his charming smile warming your heart. "I'm Jimin, a psychic that this family has requested for." He lied, giving his best convincing gesture. "I'm supposed to be informing the old couple who live here about their future"

"Oh," You gaped, snapping out of your trance. "Sorry but they left yesterday, they won't be coming back until the end of the month"

"Ah.." Jimin frowned, his eyes downcasting to the ground as he turned to walk away. "It took me quite a while to get here, but it's alright. I'll leave and come back once they're her-"

"Hold on!" You stopped him, causing the male to form a smirk you were unable to see from the back. "You must have had a hard time coming here, would you like a cup of water or something? I feel kind of bad having to send you away so at least rest for a bit inside"

"Really?" The man cheered, happily stepping into the house with you making way for him. "Thank you, you're a very nice lady" You blushed at his words, looking anywhere but his handsome face. "Right- Um, what would you like?"

"Just water, please"

----🌿

"They have a really nice place" Jimin commented, sipping out of the glass of water you gave him. He's been narrowing his eyes at you, well, behind you. It creeped you out, but you didn't want to tell him to get out just because he was staring. "Yup" You answered dryly, only making Jimin furrow his brows more.

"You know, there's something off about you. It's why I've been cautious even now as we speak" He admitted, setting the cup down. "Would you like to know why?"

"Well, now that I know why you've been staring at me like that then yeah I do. You said you were a psychic right?" He nodded at that. "Are you reading something about me that disturbs you?"

"Yes," Jimin straightened his posture, leaning forward until he was sitting at the edge of the couch. "There's something surrounding you, I can't really put it into words but it's... A negative feeling. It's all across your body, not an inch or a speck of where it isn't there" He discreetly stared at the blurry black figure standing behind you, its arms incaging you against it.

"Say, do you feel anything odd? You know, the feeling of something squeezing you?"

"Oddly enough, yeah-" You sheepishly smiled. It hasn't been long since you felt like somebody was hugging you, it wasn't tight, rather it felt warm and affectionate.

The man nodded, silently observing you before getting up. "Well, I need to head back. Have a nice day [F/N]" He winked, giving you a pat on the head as he walked out of the house without turning back.

What did he mean by surrounding you? You didn't know why the idea of people being able to read others bother you, you didn't dwell on it as much once you shrugged it off and locked the front door, feeling your body lighten.

"What time is it" You muttered to yourself, reaching to take your phone out of your pocket, but it wasn't there. Panicked surged through you as you looked around, quickening your steps as you lifted each and every cushion.

Just as you were about to drop the last pillow, you heard a small click coming from the back, following with another, and another. You cautiously approached the table you placed the basket on, and lucky enough your phone was nestled beside it.

Walking towards your phone, you picked it up and stared at the lock screen.

4:34 pm.

You must have slept for at least half an hour and spoke to the unknown man even longer. He wasn't the best company, but apart from the weird looks he was sending your way you found him entertaining and a really nice guy. "You win some you lose some I guess" You grumbled out, taking the steps up to the room you stayed in.

Little did you know, Jungkook was beside you throughout the conversation. Once he sensed that someone may have trespassed on his property he quickly disappeared from your sight, originally planning on approaching you as an innocent-looking bunny.

Much to his surprise, you were letting the man in, a man who was able to see him and was obviously a threat. Jungkook had no other choice but to stick beside you, making sure Jimin didn't have any altered motives with the way he eyed you up and down. He understood you were beautiful, but he didn't have to openly show that he was interested.

Jeon grimaced from having to think back on what happened, settling himself at the corner of your bed to watch you play on your phone. You really did make his heart flutter, something that shouldn't be happening to something like him, something that takes happiness away from others.

He's so close to just dropping everything, make himself known, and make you aware of his existence. But he shouldn't, it was too risky. He didn't want to risk scaring you away now that he had someone to be entertained of. "Man this sucks" Jeon whispered to himself, his eyes crinkling from the way you slammed your phone down on the bed when you lost. "So cute" He giggled, crossing his legs to further inspect you.

"I know you're there" You mumbled to no one in particular, though it made Jungkook fall off the bed, lightly making a sound that threw you off guard. "No way, was I right?" You said out loud, looking around trying to see anything off with your surroundings.

Swallowing the lump in your throat, you continued. "You know, the more I think about it the more I realized there might be a possibility that I might not be alone in this... huge house" Jungkook watched as you shut your device off, your eyes still scanning the room. "The little things that change and the sounds I hear whenever I'm not paying attention, which I am by the way- I'm not that foolable"

"I could have sworn the garden was only filled with Roses, Daisies, and other different kinds that I'm not able to name. I'm sure I never saw carnations before I mentioned I liked them" You breathed in, fiddling your fingers awkwardly. You didn't know whether your suspicions were true, but if what Jimin said was right then there must be something following you around and wrapping themselves around you.

"I wanted to thank you for that. The only thing I ask is whether you can give me a sign that you're actually there? So that I know I'm not going insane?" Hope filled your eyes. Jungkook was unable to move, he didn't know what to say nor do, not at all expecting to be caught on the second day of your arrival.

"You don't have to do anything major like showing yourself- Just.. knock 5 times?" The boy debated in his head, pacing back and forth and internally cursing at the air for being so stupid.

"I shouldn't," He said to himself as he looked back at you. "But I want to-" Jungkook argued. "5 times, 5 times and that's it" Jeon promised, coming closer and knocking at the side table 5 times. Lucky for him you couldn't hear the small quarrel he had with himself.

You let out a surprised yelp, not expecting it to actually happen. "No way..-"
