You sat at your usual table in the large school cafeteria, staring at the charm bracelet that adorned your wrist. intricate charms of stars, different phases of the moon, and planets hung from the small, silver chain. The memory of how you came to own the beautiful trinket flooded your mind.
*it had been a few days after your 16th birthday. The spring semester had just begun and you were in study hall when you received a text from Megumi telling you to come out to the quad.
you sighed but went anyway, knowing that if you didn’t, he’d never let you hear the end of it. you found him standing on his own under one of the old oak trees with what looked to be a small silver gift bag in his hands. as soon as he saw you making your way towards him, he jumped a little and quickly hid the bag behind his back. he offered you a nod as a form of greeting.
“y/n. you’re here,” he said matter-of-factly.
“you wanted to see me?”
“Yeah, well, I have something for you.”
“for me?” you raised an eyebrow. “this wouldn’t have anything to do with you missing my birthday, would it?”
“well…” he tilted his head to the side with a shrug.” i know it meant a lot to you and i kinda feel like crap for not having been here, y/n.”
“and i said it’s okay, fushiguro.” you laughed. ”It's not your fault your dad dragged you out to the countryside to visit family.”
“I know, but that doesn’t stop me from feeling bad about it.”
“and I'm telling you not to worry about it.” you playfully shoved his shoulder.” now… what is it?”
”you said you liked stars, right?” Megumi asked, as he awkwardly held his hands behind his back. you had told him you didn’t want any gifts. he didn’t need to give you anything, really, but megumi being megumi, wasn’t going to listen. you rolled your eyes, having already gotten a glimpse of the silver gift bag peeking from behind his back.
“um… yeah, I do.”
“you used to say that you hated it here because you couldn’t see the stars at night.” he brought his hands forward, gift bag in hand, and extended them towards you.
“What about it?” you took it, giving him a cautious look, and fished your hand inside. your fingers came into contact with a long, velvet box. your brows furrowed as you brought it out to examine it. idly, you opened the box to find a thin, silver chain, adorned with various charms depicting a crescent moon, stars, and planets. you gasped at the way it sparkled as it caught the light. “Oh my god, Megumi… are you serious?”
“well, since you couldn’t see the stars, I decided to bring the stars to you.” he scratched the back of his head, knowing just how cheesy he sounded.
“I told you that a long time ago…” you couldn’t help but smile at his words. “you remembered?”
“I’m pretty sure I remember everything you’ve ever said to me, y/n.”*
It was sweet moments like that that had defined your friendship with Megumi. you two were closer than two peas in a pod, knew each other better than anyone else, shared almost every moment of every day for the past 7 years, and were each other’s ride or die. but lately, your days together were numbered.
the cafeteria bumbled and bustled with the students’ chatter, everyone excited for the upcoming end of the school year, some of them eagerly spoke about how they’d be attending the same college in the fall, others lamented having to go far away from their childhood friends to school in other parts of the country.
you absentmindedly peeled the saran wrap off of the sandwich you held in your hands, too consumed by your thoughts. are things going to be different once we’ve graduated? once we’re out of here... will we still be friends?
graduation was coming soon, and the future that had always seemed so distant suddenly came at you with full speed. would you both be able to see each other despite maybe being in different schools? even if one of you had to move away and you’d no longer be neighbors?
“y/n!”
you jumped at the sudden shout of your name, looking up at the seat in front of you to find Megumi, raising his eyebrow at you.“megumi~ hey…”
“What's with you, y/n? You've barely touched your food.” he pointed to all the untouched sandwiches you had on your plate. “Is everything okay?”
‘yeah,” you blinked, trying to gather your thoughts. “just thinking about how next year we won’t be here, like this, anymore.”
Megumi's expression became solemn, and he rubbed at the back of his neck.
“come on now…” he said,“ this isn’t easy for me either, you know. I don’t think I’m going to survive by myself out there, y/n. the other big kids will eat me alive.”
you couldn’t help but smile at his silliness. there was no way anyone would ever have the guts to go against him. Megumi fushiguro, being the tall, dark, and the overly intimidating boy who most students were too afraid to look in the eye had only ever been able to get along with you, with a big personality although being small in size. your mouth was too big sometimes, and you’d find yourself in some pretty messy situations, but Megumi was always there, standing behind you, and making anyone second guess whatever problem they had with you. “you’ll do just fine. You don’t need me.”
“Not in the same way you need me, no, but...” his voice trailed off.
“and I don’t want to hold you back either.”
“You’re not holding me back at all,” his brows furrowed at this sentiment of yours, “the only reason I’ve been able to make it this far is you. I’ve said this to you many times.”
“I know,” you shrugged. “I just wanted to hear you say it again.”
Megumi scoffed, but you could still see a faint smile tugging at the corners of his lips. I’m going to miss that…
deep in your heart, you hoped that to be true, but things always changed when people went away. to college, nonetheless. he’d make new friends, meet new people, he’d meet girls, too, eventually finding a girlfriend. you knew that he’d attempt to keep in touch at first… but the letters, messages, calls, and visits would soon become scarce, eventually not happening at all. it was normal. this you knew. but there was no way you could bring yourself to tell him these thoughts.
“I’ve got to get going. I have a meeting with Ms. Iori.” you said, beginning to pack up your things.
“I thought all the counselor meetings were done with last week?” he asked, raising an eyebrow.
“I was sick last week, remember?”
“uh-huh…” he nodded.
“She told me she’d like to see me before the end of the week, and I don’t feel like it's the last day of school so I’m just gonna go now before class.”
“well,” he sighed, ”have fun?”
“ha-ha.” you pretended to laugh, shaking your head as the both of you began to walk in opposite directions.
the school halls were barren. long gone were the flyers from student organizations, announcements of the month, as well as any upcoming events that had been taken down in preparation for the end of the year. you didn’t think a bulletin board could look any sadder.
what Megumi didn’t know was that you had been called to Ms. Iori’s office that morning. you didn’t like lying to him, but you needed time to think.
all your worries in regards to Megumi seemed so silly to you. people graduated all the time. people moved away all the time. you knew your friendship with Megumi was stronger than anything, but you just couldn’t understand where all these worries came from. it just didn’t make sense.
you went about the rest of the day in what seemed like a blur. not much was going on in classes, other than the end-of-year parties. before you knew it, the school day had ended. somehow the school hallways seemed so long, and all you wanted was to go home.
you felt the crisp air come in contact with the slightest skin you had exposed, causing it to become flushed. just as he had done the past 7 years, Megumi stood at the gates of the school waiting for you, looking for you through the crowd of students. his eyes zeroed in on you as he began to wave you over. a smile, almost as if it were a habit, began to form across your face.
a sharp twist in your heart caused your breath to catch. you did your best to quickly compose yourself, before meeting him at the gate. “hi~”
“Hey,” he greeted. “ did everything with Ms. Iori go okay?”
“huh?” you blinked, slightly confused, but remembering your excuse from earlier. “oh, yeah, Ms. Iori. yeah, she just wanted to go over a few things.”
“like?” he asked, reaching for your backpack from your grasp, and slinging it over his shoulder, he began to walk slowly, leading you out of the schoolyard.
“you know, the usual. “ you sighed, as you began to follow after him, matching his step. “ my plans for the future. college. How I’m doing. the whole shebang.”
“of course she’d ask you all these things. you’re the top-ranking student in the region. you’ve got to think about your future.”
“I know, but… I just didn’t think that I’d have to be making so many decisions all at once.”
“it happens. soon enough you’ll be thinking about college orientations, internships, job applications.”
“yeah…”
“you’re gonna try to go to my uni, right?”
“that’s always been the plan.”
“Yup.”
suddenly, all that could be heard was the gravel shifting under both of your feet with each step, the conversations of others as you walked by, both of you shifted awkwardly, unsure of what to say next.
“I mean.. you can go wherever you want, you know?” he said, quietly. “with grades like yours? any school would have its doors wide open for you.”
“I know.”
“you don’t have to settle for mine. it’s a great university, but I know you can do so much better, y/n.”
“Are you trying to get rid of me?” you asked, jokingly.
he stopped dead in his tracks, looking at you sternly. “why the hell would you think I’d ever do that?”
“well,” you raised an eyebrow,” you’re selling the idea of me going to another university a little too hard.”
“no… that’s not it. I just..” he sighed, fixing the straps of the backpacks on his shoulders. “I just don’t want you to settle because of me when you can do and deserve better.”
“I’m not settling.” you continued to walk on, nudging him to follow along. “I’m still trying to figure out what I want to do with my life, and meanwhile, I want you to be there with me every step of the way until I do figure it out.”
he nodded, listening to your words. “if that’s what you want, I’ll respect it. and I’ll always be there.” he offered his fist for you to bump.
you chuckled and bumped his fist with your comparably smaller fist.
“Are you hungry?” he asked.” I’ve been craving pizza for the longest time.”
“I could go for pizza.”
it was roughly a 15-minute walk from the school gates to the pizzeria near your neighborhood, and the warmth of the restaurant was a comforting contrast compared to the cold air from the outside
the two of you sat at the same old booth you had since you were 14, sitting across from each other, ordering the same double pepperoni, light sauce, garlic knot crust pizza with two cokes you had since then.
“I’m gonna miss this place.” Megumi mused.
“me, too.” you agreed, taking a bite from the slice in your hands. “no other pizza will be as good as this no matter where we go.”
Megumi chuckled, taking a sip from his coke. his eyebrows knit together and he bit his lip. “it’s going to be different, huh.” he mused.
“mhm.” you agreed.
the air felt heavy between the two of you. the days passed and each day brought you closer to graduation, closer to being apart from one another. it was such a difficult routine to break; you had spent every day of your lives together and for it to all come to an end the moment you’d get handed a measly diploma.
the two of you stared at each other for a long time, with Megumi eventually breaking the silence by asking if you wanted to order dessert. with that, the evening resumed to your usual chatter, the two of you sharing a molten lava brownie-like you always did after eating and for a moment, it almost seemed as if you two existed on a plane of normalcy. your mind created this scenario in which you two remained at this age forever, never graduating high school and just enjoying pizza every night, spending the whole night in this very booth, just talking and being young forever.
the sky outside grew dark and you eventually decided to split the bill and head on home. the night had grown slightly colder than it had been during the day, and you mentally scolded yourself for not having brought a jacket. in all fairness, you hadn’t considered going anywhere after school.
you felt a warm fabric being draped over your shoulders, causing you to jump a little, only for you to see that it had been Megumi doing his best to warm you up with his hoodie.
“what about-”
“I’m fine.” he chuckled.” I’m not the one in a skirt. I’ll live.”
the two of you walked home side by side, and you internally groaned as you saw Megumi turn on the long way home. it was ritualistic for the both of you to take a long way home to have more time to talk about anything you needed to, but this time you were a) really cold and b) feeling too pathetic about your upcoming separation. you were so immersed in your thoughts you hadn’t quite noticed Megumi had stopped dead in his tracks.
“so y/n,” Megumi spoke up, breaking the silence once again, “I need to talk to you about something.”
you stared back at him over your shoulder, brows furrowed. “what’s up?”
He kicked at the gravel at his feet. “I… I don’t like this.”
“like what?”
“this.” he gestured between you and him. “you and I have never had a problem talking. about anything. and I mean anything and everything, y/n.” he stepped closer, “and then we get a week from graduation and suddenly we go mute? we can’t say anything? can you remember a time in the past seven years where you and I could go 5 minutes without talking to each other, not counting when we were sleeping?”
“I know,” you sighed, “you can’t just pin this on me, fushiguro. we’ve both been just as weird about it. maybe..”
“maybe what?”
“Maybe we’re just mentally preparing for the inevitable.”
“y/n. you know I’d never.”
“I know you, Megumi. I do.” you turned to face him properly. “but I also know what happens when people go to college. we don’t even know if we’re going to the same college. if we’re gonna be in the same time zones. Sure, we’ll probably text and call each other at first, but what happens after? when we make new friends? when we get busy with schoolwork, projects, midterms, finals? then what? what happens when we meet people and start dating? do you honestly think any girlfriend you’ll have will tolerate you making an effort to talk to another girl? do you think any guy would put up with me taking all your calls and texts no matter the time of day?”
“It won’t be like that. you know I would never be with anyone that doesn’t want you in the picture. you and i-”
“are a package deal,” you said together.
“you don’t understand how a girl’s mind works. sure, a female friend is a friend, right? it seems like nothing?”
he nodded, thinking the answer was obvious.
“It's not ‘nothing’ to a girlfriend.” you sighed. “what if the roles were reversed? Imagine if you were my boyfriend. would you like it if I was close to any other guys, regardless if he’s my best friend or not?” you asked.
Megumi stayed quiet for this.
“It wouldn’t seem like nothing to a boyfriend. not everyone sees it the way we do, Fushiguro... to us it makes sense. but what about everyone else?”
“fuck everyone else.” Megumi stepped closer to you and extended his hand. “We’re ride or die. it’s been like that since the beginning and it’ll be like that until the end.”
you looked at his hand for what felt like a long time. you took it in yours and the two of you sealed the silent promise with your handshake.“ride or die.” you repeated, softly.
Megumi threw his arm around your shoulder and began to resume the pathway to home, both of your steps seemed to drag, each step coming slower than the last as the gates to both your houses came into view. it’s like neither of you wanted to go home just yet, and wanted to prolong the moment as much as possible.
you both stopped against the brick wall that divided your houses. Megumi leaned against it, as he usually did, and took a good look at you.
“I meant what I said, y/n.”
“I know.” you offered him a small smile.
for a few minutes, you just stood there, looking at each other, and something in your heart twinged. for a brief moment, you thought you saw a glimpse of what you were feeling in his eyes, too, but kept silent. all you could do was just stand there, and bask in each other’s presence.
the more you looked at him the more you saw of him. not your best friend that you’d known since you were kids. but you saw the man he was becoming. the kid that had been shorter than you when you first met was now an entire head taller than you. the squeaky-voiced kid now had a lower, manly voice. you’d heard girls at school refer to him as “cute” and “hot,” but he was just the same old Megumi to you.
maybe it was what you’d talked about earlier. maybe it was the way the streetlight made his dark blue eyes shine like steel, and the shadow of his cheekbones accentuated his serious expression. maybe it was the way his cheeks and ears glowed bright pink as he caught on to you studying his face, or perhaps because he thought you’d caught him doing the same thing. or maybe it was because having his hoodie on you made you feel as if he had his arms around you, the way you wished he would do so right now.
wait.
what?
you blinked several times, trying to regain composure. “I should… I should go inside.” you began.
Megumi blinked at you, his mind processing the situation, before standing up straight and offering you your backpack back. “right, right. you should head on inside. it’s getting colder by the minute.”
“here,” you took your backpack and began to shrug his hoodie off your shoulders, but he rested his hand on your shoulder, keeping the hoodie in place. you looked up at him, confused.
“keep it. Megumi doesn’t need it.” he smiled, and pointed with his chin to your front gate. “go on inside.”
“You go in, too.”
“I will.” he laughed. “but you go in first.”
“fine.” you rolled your eyes. you input your pin into the gate and open it. you paused before stepping inside. “hey… Fushiguro?”
“yeah?” he furrowed his brow, waiting for what you might say.
“good night.” you smiled.
“good night, y/n.” he rolled his eyes and gave a small smile. “see you tomorrow?”
“See you tomorrow,” you confirmed, and with that stepped inside your yard, allowing the gate to shut behind you.
for some reason, everything felt different. this goodbye had felt different from all the ones that had come before.
maybe it was all in your head.
you entered your home to find your mom sitting in the living room watching a Friends rerun.
“Sweetheart, you’re home~”
“yeah…” you smiled, taking your shoes off at the door.
“How was the last day before graduation?”
the words felt so weird out loud.
“fine,” you answered, simply.
“Have you eaten? I could heat you up some lasagna I made earlier?”
“no, that’s okay. I just got here from eating with Megumi.”
“pizza?”
“pizza.”
“You eat so much pizza, I’m surprised you can keep your figure the way it is. which reminds me. I had your spare uniform dry cleaned for tomorrow.” your mom sat up. “I left it in your room. Make sure it doesn’t get wrinkled.”
“Oh really? Umm thanks, mom.”
“It’s tradition here for you kids to wear your uniforms to graduation. It commemorates the last time you’ll ever wear one. Mr. Fushiguro and I were thinking about taking you kids out to dinner after the ceremony, we can always come back so that you kids can change out of them.”
“is that so?” you nodded. “Well…sounds good to me. Thanks for the uniform, mom. I appreciate it.”
“no problem, kiddo.”
“I’m gonna head up to my room and freshen up.”
your mom hummed with a smile and turned her attention back to the flickering tv.
after a much-needed hot shower, you entered your room, towel drying your hair before ultimately throwing the towel to the side on a pile of dirty laundry in the corner of your room and plopped down on your bed. you were surrounded by memories of your soon ending childhood. old stuffed animals, pictures of you and Megumi taken from when you were both ten up until now, books you had collected over the years, drawings done by you and Megumi, old posters of bands you’d gone to see together. your lives were so tangled in each other it was as if you were both living the same one.
you glanced at Megumi’s hoodie that was strewn at the head of your bed and thought about how it wouldn’t hurt to put it on. you flipped on the hood and gently pulled on the strings. hesitantly, you hugged yourself, bringing the fabric as close to you as possible.
it still smelled like his cologne, and something about that fact made your heart throb. wearing his clothes had always made you feel comfortable, not because of their fit on you, but because anything Megumi related made you feel safe. but right now all you could think about was what it would be like to have his arms around you, protecting you, even if he wasn’t physically there. you’d gotten too used to having him around that you didn’t know what would become of you the day he would no longer be there.
all of a sudden the memory of the first time you both met came into mind.
you thought about the little boy with the thick, dark hair who had found his way onto your doorstep. and how the moment you made eye contact with the shy boy your heart skipped several beats, you couldn’t even move by how dazzled you were by him, something you dismissed as nerves at the tender age of 10. just as he’s always done, he avoided eye contact with you then while scratching the back of his head shyly, and you wondered if people as beautiful as he existed.
you tossed and turned, trying to push those thoughts of him out of your mind, and to get some needed sleep, but he’d always find his way back into your mind.
these days all your mind would bring you to was something related to Megumi, and how your time with him was limited. when you two were 10, you two always thought you were inseparable. sometimes you wondered just how true that could be, and if your days were numbered.
Why did that bother you so much?
you knew it was inevitable.
it was as if… a part of you had hoped that megumi would always be in your life.
that you’d see each other every day for as long as you both lived. to keep the custom of watching movies and ordering pizza alive, doing it for years and years, even when you’d both gotten older, your life would still be tangled with his and even your kids would be best friends.
you wondered why it was that when you imagined yourself and megumi in the future, both of your spouses had been absent.
could it be that all along, deep down, you wished for a future with him?
not just as his friend… but as a significant other?
your heart seemed to swell at the thought.
there was no answer to be decided.
you had already known.
you woke up earlier than usual, upon your mother’s insistence, and you found yourself with neatly straightened hair and a face covered in simple, although admittedly pretty, makeup. you shook a little as you took in your appearance in your bedroom mirror. the familiar colors of your uniform brought on a feeling of melancholy. This really would be the last time you’d wear it. The last day of your childhood, in a sense. your mother helped you put on your school’s coat over your shoulders, making sure your hair didn’t get caught.
the drive to school was filled with your mom chattering away about how proud of you she was and how this was such a monumental part of growing up. each word she said made you feel queasy.
not to mention that a message you’d received late last night had made you all the more anxious to get to school.
you didn’t know why you were nervous. Graduations were such a normal thing but it felt to you like the rising hill on a rollercoaster and there was no telling when the drop was going to come.
after what seemed like an eternally long drive, your mom dropped you off at the school’s front entrance, promising to see you at and after the ceremony.
the school halls seemed so much bigger than you remembered in the last four years you’d been here. you saw classmates of yours scurrying past you to get to their designated homerooms since everyone would be dismissed accordingly.
within the next few minutes, you walked through the same hallways, went up the same stairs, passed by the same people, and walked into the same homeroom you had for the past four years for the last time.
Using your nerves as a false sense of adrenaline, you shot a quick text to MegumiMegumiMegumi asking him to meet you at the courtyard. would it be too cheesy to wait in the middle of the courtyard? it was empty, from the empty benches to the barren ground void of any grass. The current weather made the atmosphere seem all the colder but at this moment you could care less. you checked your phone’s clock: 11:11. You only had a few minutes left before graduation started. it had to be now or never.
“y/n?”
you looked over your shoulder, slightly startled, to find Megumi standing awkwardly. his hair was combed down for once in his life, probably on behest from his dad, with the wind having brought some strands of his hair loose and falling near his eyes, his attire similar to yours as he wore a coat over his uniform.
it felt as if you were seeing him for the first time. seeing him… and he was breath-taking. your gaze locked with his, and you briefly saw him take in a deep breath before offering you a warm smile.
“fushiguro, hey.” you returned his smile.” you’re here.”
“of course,” he chuckled, making his way closer to where you were. he rested his hands on your shoulders, looking all over your face and then up and down.” I almost couldn’t recognize you like this.”
“shut up.” you laughed, lightly smacking his arm. “You’ve seen me like this a hundred times.”
“But not like this,” he laughed, shrugging away from the impact of your hand. He stepped back looking at you again. “Not like this,” he repeated. “It’s the last time we’ll see each other like this, you know. And I’ve got to say… you look… beautiful, y/n. really.” you could see he meant it. there was nothing but sincerity in his eyes.
“Thank you. really. you look good, too.”
“Thanks.” he smiled shyly, combing his hand through his hair, pushing it back.
you just wanted to look at him. a part of you was sure that you’d never get tired of looking at him. it’s like with each look, you’d notice something new that you hadn’t before. and you remembered why you were here.
“I have to tell you something,” you said together, causing you both to laugh again.
“Can I go first?” you asked, mustering your courage. “if I don’t say it now, I don’t think I’ll ever be able to.”
Megumi's face shifted in surprise for a moment, but he nodded nonetheless. “okay. I think… I think I can wait. go ahead.”
Suddenly, your heartbeat felt like it was audible in your ears and you could almost feel your heart about to jump out of your throat. regardless, you took a deep breath and for some reason, looking at him felt difficult. your eyes fell to your feet, which seemed so small in front of his, and finally, found your voice to speak.
“I got into KT. I just got an email with the acceptance last night.”
“y/n! are you serious?" Uncharacteristically, Megumi reached out and hugged you tightly, lifting you off of your feet and swinging you around in circle. You couldn't help but giggle as he set you down. "Y/n, that's great news. Absolutely amazing. That means we’re going to Kyoto together in the fall.”
“yeah,” you laughed, nervously. “I just.. didn’t want to tell you before it was all a sure thing.”
“I’m so happy, y/n! You have no idea.. i-”
“wait. let me finish, please? I have something else I need to say.” you cut him off before he could finish and took a step back away from his embrace. Taking a deep breath, you did your best to gather your courage and look up at him again. “I like you. a lot.”
You heard Megumi let out a sharp breath, his shock evident.
“I think I maybe even love you. I think I always have… you… you don’t have to say it back, but… this is how I feel.” your words felt so heavy, and you chuckled, the nerves starting to shift into the second wave of false confidence. you tried to gauge his expression, but he stood there quietly, visibly stunned by your sudden confession.
“Megumi Fushiguro, I think I love you.”
The both of you stood in silence, just staring at each other, a weird, pit forming in your stomach. Megumi seemed to be deep in thought, but you caught the faint transition of his expression from stoic to the ghost of a smile tugging at the corners of his lips.
“You don’t have to say anything. it’s okay.” you weren’t sure if you were trying to convince him or yourself.
Megumi furrowed his brow and opened his mouth to speak.
“Y/n, I-”
“Megumi Fushiguro! y/n l/n!” Ms. Iori, your counselor, came rushing down the courtyard. “I’ve been looking everywhere for you! the ceremony’s about to start. everyone else is already at the auditorium. let’s go.” she motioned you both over.
You felt your shoulders drop a little and began to walk over to Ms. Iori.
“Mr. Fushiguro, I don’t have all day!” she yelled again, causing you to look over your shoulder at a frazzled-looking megumi, who had hurriedly rushed to your side. Ms. Iori sighed as she hurriedly rushed you two to the auditorium and to your places. “it’s always you two. once you two get those diplomas I’ll finally stop growing white hair.”
You took your designated seat with the other graduating kids with the same last name and anxiously waited for the beginning of your future.
[megumi pov]
Part of him wondered if he was dreaming. if he had heard you say those words that he so desperately wanted to be true. the words he wished he’d have been the one to say, not just then, but ever since he could remember.
He wished he could’ve said it freshman year, right after Yuuji Itadori from the occult club had asked you out and you had publicly declined his confession.
He wished he would have told you the night of the spring formal, when neither of you had dates, despite both getting asked by several other people, and you had both decided to have a movie night instead.
He wished he would have told you on your senior trip to Enoshima when you’d gone on a late-night stroll together on the beach. Or how you looked so beautiful last night after you two wondered what your future might be like with and without each other and he had ultimately decided that he didn’t want any future that didn’t have you in it.
He wished he would have told you last night when the very thought of someone that wasn’t him being by your side made his heart ache so much he swore he would cry if it weren’t for the sake of keeping the pretense that your friendship kept him content.
At the moment after Ms. Iori had interrupted his inner manifesto about how much he loved you and had always loved you, not just as your best friend but as the man he wished he could be for you, and how he had wanted to tell you for a long, he watched you as you walked away and knew then and there that it wasn’t a sight he wanted to be permanent.
and so he went along with you, to what would be your final day as the kids you two had known each other to be these past seven years, and waited anxiously for the ceremony to be over. all he wanted was to tell you that he, too, felt like you did and wanted nothing more than to spend all his time with you, and get to know you, not as your best friend, but hopefully as more. the moment in which yours and his names were called respectively to go up and get your diplomas, the sound of your parents and friends cheering loudly was all a blur to him.
the words “I present to you, the graduating class of 2019!” and the cheers of his classmates all seemed like distant noise.
at that moment, he couldn’t see anyone else. he pawed his way through the crowd, finally coming across you, the person he wanted to see most in the world.
“Hey, Fushiguro! this it, huh?” you smiled up at him.
“yeah,” he said, almost breathlessly. “This is it.” he didn’t know what overcame him next, but with no warning, he placed his hands on either side of your face and pressed a soft kiss to your lips. he pulled away, slowly, his eyes wide and surprise painted on his face as if he couldn’t believe his actions. In classic Megumi Fushiguro fashion, he rubbed shyly at the back of his neck, avoiding your gaze as a blush brushed across his cheeks. He screwed his eyes shut for a few seconds, taking a deep breath before opening his eyes again. You watched him as he brought his hand down to the buttons of his uniform and swiftly tore off the second button. He reached out to take your hand and placed the button in your palm before closing your hand into a fist and covering it with his hand. “you know, right?” he asked. “To me… there is no one more precious than you.”
“I know.”
