I hate people who are only in tcc simply because they find criminals attractive and not because of how interesting their cases or personalities are

thinking about if someone else perpetrated zero day instead of andre and cal.

andre and cal would be standing in line for lunch, complaining about whatever food is being served. maybe they’d be talking about how andre had the night off work and how they’d finally get to see a new horror movie that was in theaters.

the first gunshot they hear would sound like a firework. cal would joke about it sounding like gun fire before another pop sounds. suddenly it isn’t a joke anymore. people come running into the lunch room from the hallways, screaming about how someone has a gun. windows are being broken, and people are jumping out of the school and into the grass.

people only get louder as the shooter enters the lunch room. cal crouches down, grabbing at andre to come down with him, but andre is frozen. he’s staring at the boy with the gun, a sophomore he knows from science club. there’s a moment of recognition between the two before a bullet is fired into andre’s stomach.

after andre hits the ground, a couple more shots ring out and the teen leaves. cal is immediately holding andre, pressing down on his wounds and repeatedly cursing and praying in a god he doesn’t believe in.

somehow, cal gets andre up, basically carrying him with his hands around his waist. someone grabs onto andre from the other side, another student desperate to help. cal sputters out thanks but quickly notices how much blood is on the floor and how much of it belongs to andre.

when the three students reach the front of the school, police are waiting. they run up to the boys and ask what happened. there are flashing lights and people screaming and gunshots coming from every direction. cal can’t think.

the only thing he knows is that andre is getting taken away from him. he’s being put on a stretcher and looked at by emts. cal’s feet move before he sees the look the emts are giving one another. one of their hands is on andre’s neck where his pulse should be, but it’s not.

somewhere deep within cal knew andre wasn’t going to make it out, but seeing his body, lifeless and cold, is too much. cal collapses. he’s dry heaving and barely breathing. his clothes are heavy and stick to his pale skin.

instead of andre, he’s the one being loaded into an ambulance. he’s the one with a heart monitor on. he’s the one being asked questions.

cal’s alive. andre isn’t.
