The last thing Eddie expected was to survive the Upside Down, he was convinced that he was as good as dead. So imagine his surprise when he woke up in the hospital, his newfound friends, girlfriend and Uncle Wayne sitting around him.
The first sense that came back to him was his hearing, he could hear the quiet conversation that Robin and Steve were having in the corner of the room, a few unfamiliar voices that mixed in with Mike’s and Dustin’s, then he heard her. His wonderful girlfriend whom he probably scared the shit out of. She was talking with Wayne, saying that when Eddie woke up, he didn’t have to worry about taking care of his nephew and losing shifts at the plant, that she was more than willing to do it.
The next sense that came back was his smell. It was overwhelming at first, the smell of bleach and an overall sterile environment. He smelled his Uncle’s distinct scent, woody and musky but one of the most comforting smells to him. He smelled her, she always had the smells of lavender and vanilla clinging to her no matter what she did. Even if she had showered at the trailer and used Eddie’s soap and shampoo, she still had those smells attached to her. They had grown to comfort him.
Then his taste came back. The only thing he could taste was her chapstick. She had been applying her chapstick to his lips every few hours so they wouldn’t dry out or crack. She didn’t want him to feel any more pain than she thought he already would. She also knew that he was a giant baby when it came to having a cracked or split lip so she wanted to prevent the inevitable whining.
His sense of touch was the next thing to return to him. He felt a few hands on his shins, they were smaller hands so he assumed that they belonged to Mike, Dustin and maybe Lucas. He knew that someone was sitting on his bed by his feet, he couldn’t tell who it was. He also knew that there were two people holding his hands, he felt the rough hand of his Uncle in his right and the soft, delicate hand of his girlfriend in his left. He felt a strand of his hair tickling his face, it was uncomfortable but he couldn’t move to swipe it out of the way. As if reading his mind, she had swiped the strand of hair out of his face, tucking it behind his ear, gently stroking his cheek once his hair was in place.
He heard her quietly ask Steve a question, her voice sounded so broken, she sounded so tired. Eddie pushed himself, gathering up enough strength to squeeze the two hands that were holding his. “Holy shit, Eds? Can you hear me, baby?” Her sweet voice asked him, the room fell silent. The only sound being the heart monitor.
The last and final sense Eddie got back was his sight. He had mustered up enough strength to open his eyes. The light was bright for a minute, someone rushing to turn them off. He didn’t recognize who it was, but he was grateful. The first thing he noticed, other than the sheer amount of people in the room and a sleepy Robin sitting on his bed, was the wilting flowers and deflating balloons.
“Welcome back to the land of the living, Munson,” Steve was the first person to break the silence.
He managed a smile and let out a chuckle despite his dry throat, “Thanks Harrington.”
“Never do that to me again!” She cried, resting her forehead on his shoulder.
“You scared me, son,” Wayne said, a single tear falling from his eye. The man never cried but when it came to the boy he considered a son, he bawled like a baby when he found out Eddie was alive and in the hospital.
“You can’t get rid of me that easy.” Y/N and Wayne both let out a tearful chuckle at his joke. “Can I have some water?” Multiple people scrambled to get him water, eventually settling on letting Dustin pour the water. She had grabbed the water from Dustin’s outstretched hand, helping her boyfriend drink from the cup.
“I don’t think you’ve met a few people in this room before, you up for some introductions?” Max chimed in, she had been hiding in one of the other corners with Lucas. Eddie just nodded as Y/N pulled the cup away from his lips.
“This is Will, his brother Jonathan, their mom Joyce, my girlfriend Eleven, and Argyle,” Mike had gone down the line to introduce everyone to Eddie.
Hopper went on to explain that they were able to clear Eddie’s name, pinning it on the now dead Jason Carver. They filled Eddie in on everything he missed, how Hopper was still alive, how Max had survived Vecna, how Nancy managed to kill Vecna, how he managed to save Hawkins by buying the other group more time. Everyone was there for hours, Eddie and Will bonded over their love for D&D, him and Argyle bonding over their love for some good weed, and then falling quiet and observing everyone around him, mostly his uncle and his girlfriend. Wayne was the first one to notice that Eddie had started to doze off, “Let’s give these two some space. I’m gonna head back to the trailer, call me if you need anything. I’ll bring you clothes in the morning, sweetheart.” She had nodded at the man, who had made his way to her side, dropping a kiss on the top of her head.
The nurse, Dot, had walked into Eddie’s room and announced that visiting hours were over and that they were to all leave the hospital and go home. “You can all come back at 8 a.m tomorrow. Y/N, do you want a cot, honey?”
“I’m okay, Dot. Thank you.”
The group had bid their goodbyes, exiting the room, Wayne lingering for a minute. The man, who very rarely showed affection with the boy, kissed his nephew on the crown of his head, savoring their moment together before he turned and left. Eddie was in and out of sleep a majority of the night, every time he turned to the left, he found his girl, asleep in the uncomfortable hospital chair. As she slept, he finally took a look at his stomach, where he was attacked by the bats. He was mostly healed, the only thing left behind was scarring which he knew would be permanent.
“Eds? What are you doing awake?” Her sleepy voice asked him, his eyes tearing away from the scarred flesh of his abdomen and at the face of his girlfriend. One of the few people he sought out for comfort.
“They just came in to take more blood. Do you want a cot? That chair doesn’t look comfy,” Eddie replied, his concern for her deep in his voice.
“Don’t worry about me, baby. I’m okay, this chair has molded to the shape of my ass at this point. Go back to sleep, I’ll be here if you need me, okay?”
“Can you lay with me? I can’t sleep without you.” She got out of her chair and climbed into the tiny hospital bed next to him. He curled up, his head resting on her chest, arms wrapped around her the best he could. She pulled the covers up over his shoulders, her hand burying itself into his hair and massaging his scalp. “I love you, sweetheart.”
“I love you more, rockstar.”

⠂⠄⠄⠂⠁⠁⠂⠄⠄⠂⠁⠁⠂⠄⠄⠂ ⠂⠄⠄⠂☆
„What’s happening here?“ a cheery voice questioned from behind you and you whirled around with a jump, almost dropping the tray of snacks in your hands. James, you’re brother’s best friend was standing in the doorway leading into the living room, eying the pillow fort you had built in front of the couch. “Are we not going out?”
“You are,” you told him, setting the tray down on the coffee table next to the hot chocolate that was starting to get cold by now. “But I’m staying in. Jared is coming over.”
“Ah, the boyfriend. Are we finally going to meet him?” James walked further into the room, inspecting your creation and nodding approvingly.
“Well, he was supposed to meet Rem and Siri before you guys left but I guess he’s running late,” you grumbled, not caring to hide your disappointment. Jared had found an excuse every single time he was supposed to meet your brother so far.
After almost two months of dating, you thought it was about time it finally happened. You had told him that your brother was the most important person in your life even before you had made your relationship official. Remus’ opinion on the people you surrounded yourself with mattered to you, and the more Jared avoided coming to your house, the less Remus thought he was the right guy for you. It did not help that both Sirius and James backed him up, sharing his opinion.
He should have been here an hour ago. The plan was for you to make the fort and prepare snacks together, but after half an hour of waiting for him and him not responding to any of your calls or texts, you just started by yourself. Now everything was ready, the first movie already pulled up on the television, just waiting to be started.
“Do you think he’ll actually show up this time?” James asked with a grimace.
Avoiding to meet his eyes, you pulled your phone out again, typing out another message to your boyfriend. “I don’t think so. But I really thought he would come through this time. He promised me.”
Heavy footsteps could be heard from the stairs and soon Sirius and Remus joined you in the living room, Remus looking at you with a pitying expression on his face. “Still nothing from him?”
You shook your head at him, Sirius coming closer to pull you into a hug. You let him, resting your head against his warm chest.
“You could always just come out with us, bug.” your brother’s boyfriend offered but you shook your head again.
“I’ve already set all of this up. And I’m not really in the mood. I think I’ll just watch a movie by myself and go to bed early tonight.” Stepping out of Sirius’ embrace, you crawled into the fort, pulling one of the fluffy blankets over your legs. “But thanks anyway.”
The boys all exchanged glances, a silent conversation you had no part in happening behind your back.
“You know, my head kind of hurts. I think I’ll stay in as well,” you heard James announce.
Remus shot him a knowing look but did not intervene. “I guess it’s just you and me then, Pads.”
“Bye guys, have fun!” you called out to them as they made their way outside, scooting over to make some room for James as he crawled in beside you, offering him part of your blanket.
This was not unusual. Even though James did not live with the three of you, he was around basically all the time. The two of you hanging out alone was not a rare occurrence, especially since Remus and Sirius had started dating and both of you had to come to terms with the fact that sometimes, they want to spend time with each other without you there.
“What are we watching?” he asked as he pushed a pillow behind his back, settling down with one of his arms behind his neck.
“We were each going to choose a movie,” you explained, leaning forwards to get the mugs from the table, handing him one. “I chose ’10 Things I Hate About You’ because he claims there are no good rom-coms.”
“The red flags just keep coming,” he teased, but you knew there was some truth behind it. You jokingly rolled your eyes, pretending, and failing, to look annoyed.
Over the two months you had been seeing Jared, you had gotten quite used to their jabs at him. At first, it did make you upset that it seemed as if they were not even giving the guy a chance, but by now you could not help but agree to what they were saying.
“Let’s just start the movie.” Pressing the start button on the remote, you leaned your head back against the couch, a big bowl of popcorn on your lap.
It became harder and harder to concentrate on the movie however, every time your hand accidentally brushed James’ when you reached for the popcorn at the same time. Mentally cursing yourself for still not being able to hold your feelings in check, you pushed the bowl towards him, deciding you did not want any more.
You had spent the better part of your life crushing on the boy, even though you knew nothing could ever come of it. He loved you, you knew that, but not in the way you wanted him to. When you started your first year of college, after moving in with your brother and Sirius, you had decided it was time to move on.
The boys did not make it easy for you though, one or more of them hovering around you almost all of the time. You liked that they looked out for you, but when it came to meeting guys it was more of a curse than a blessing.
“You know you didn’t have to stay with me, right?” you asked him eventually, knowing he lied about having a headache.
“I know,” he said with a small smile, eyes not leaving the screen. “But this is more fun anyways.”
----------♡----------
“You’re speeding,” you complained, trying not to look down at the blood-soaked towel wrapped around your hand.
James chose to ignore you, his jaw tense as his fingers tapped on the steering wheel impatiently. You were starting to think he was mad at you. But you did not ask him to drive you to the emergency room, that was his own decision.
You had all been hanging out at your house playing a drinking game when you went to cut up some more limes for the drinks. Being distracted by Sirius trying to do a cartwheel outside, your focus had drifted as you watched him through the kitchen window, and the knife in your hand slipped.
A panic broke out when you stepped back outside, blood dripping down your hand. You had scolded both Remus and Sirius when they had jumped to get their keys, reminding them of how much they have had to drink and saying you would call an uber. But James had insisted on being fine to drive, only having had one drink.
The drive to the hospital only took ten minutes and you wondered just how fast James had been driving, as it should have been about double that amount. James jumped out of the car and hurried to your side, opening the door for you.
You rolled your eyes at his fretting as he ushered you inside, plopping down on one of the chairs in the waiting area while he went to the reception. It looked like he was arguing with the nurse there for a moment before he came back to fall into the seat beside you.
“We’re going to have to wait for a bit,” he grumbled, looking down at the clipboard the nurse had given him. He started scribbling on the paper and you leaned into his side to see what he was doing.
Your eyes widened slightly when you saw he was filling out your medical information, not even having to think about it. Checking over what he put down, you were surprised that all of it was correct. He did not miss an allergy and even remembered the tonsil surgery you had when you were four years old. How did he even know all of this?
“You didn’t take anything today, right?” he questioned, tapping the pencil on the box to write down the medication you took. You shook your head, your cheeks growing red when you saw him put down the exact name of your birth control.
Slumping back in your seat, you let him fill the rest out in peace, feeling that he was not in a particularly good mood. He still seemed a little upset when you walked out of the building almost two hours later, sporting a whole 12 stitches on the palm of your right hand.
----------♡----------
You woke up with a jolt a couple days later to the sound of the lawnmower starting right below your bedroom window. Confused, you pushed the blankets off yourself, stumbling over to look outside.
Remus had been supposed to mow the lawn today, seeing as your mom was coming to visit the next day and you wanted the house to look perfect. However, last night he had informed you that Sirius and him, would be busy going on a date.
Arguing that you could not do it yourself with your hand still wrapped in bandages, every small movement still hurting like a bitch, you had grown frustrated when he told you it did not matter and that your mom would not care about the state of your lawn.
The night had ended in a fight, something that rarely happened between the two of you. Maybe he was feeling bad about it and changed his mind after all. But when you pushed the curtain aside to check, your mouth ran dry when it was not him you found outside.
It was James, shirtless, the muscles in his back jumping as he pushed the mower over the grass. You drew back on instinct, watching him feeling wrong. You were supposed to be getting over this stupid crush and not thinking about how good he looked when he pushed back his sweaty hair.
Deciding it would be better to keep yourself busy by starting to clean up the inside of the house, you backed away from the window, not wanting to give yourself an opportunity to keep ogling your brother’s best friend.
----------♡----------
The sound of a door shutting downstairs rung throughout the house and you stuck your head out of the bathroom. “Sirius is that you?” you called down the stairs.
“It’s me,” you heard James call back, the sound of his footsteps coming up the stairs getting closer. “They’re still out, why? Do you need something?”
You were glad to find him wearing a shirt again. He had spent almost all day outside, not leaving it at moving the lawn but also trimming up your hedges and cleaning the deck furniture. You were already trying to think of ways to thank him for all the work he had been doing today.
“No, I’m fine. He just told me he would be back by now,” you replied, checking the time again on your phone. “He was going to help me wash my hair again.”
Since you still could not really use your right hand for much, the task of washing yourself had become quite difficult. While showering took you a lot more work and time than before, it was possible to do, but doing your hair had become almost impossible.
“Remus texted me earlier that they’re running late. But I can help you out if you want,” James offered with a grin, completely nonchalantly. Your stomach flipped at the thought of his hands running through your hair.
It was probably not a good idea. You had been trying to reduce the physical contact between the two of you, not increase it. But you assumed it would be harder to explain to him why you let Sirius do it and not him.
So, you tried not to act indifferently when you nodded at him. “Sure, why not.”
He followed you into the bathroom and you sat down in front of the tub, pulling a towel around your shoulders.
James knelt down at your side, gingerly gathering your hair in his hands and pulling it over the edge of the tub, letting it fall inside. He then took the shower head before turning on the water, waiting and checking with his hand to see if it was warm enough.
You closed your eyes when the water finally ran down your hair, trying to control the butterflies in your stomach as he ran his fingers through it.
Noticing that he was taking his sweet time rubbing the shampoo in, his fingers gently pressing into your scalp, you found yourself wondering if maybe he was enjoying this just as much as you were. You had to keep yourself from humming contently as he carefully kept massaging your head, a red tint making it’s way from your ears over your cheeks.
By the time he was doing the same thing again with the conditioner, you had almost forgotten about the fact that you were supposed to be getting over him.
When he was done rinsing your hair with the water, he turned it off and his hand went to the back of your neck, gently nudging you to sit up straight. James took the towel off your shoulders, wrapping it around your head and gently rubbing the access water out of your hair.
His hands stilled when he caught your eyes, both of you seemingly frozen as you stared at each other. Maybe you were imagining it, but you could have sworn he started leaning in closer to you when the sound of the front door slamming shut broke the silence around you.
You quickly jumped back from each other, James clearing your throat as you dropped your gaze to your lap. “Are you good? Or do you need anything else?” he asked in a quiet voice.
“No,” you shook your head, mustering up a small smile. “Thanks for helping me.”
“Always,” he told you, before standing up and leaving the room, leaving you to cover your face with your hands as you let out a groan.
----------♡----------
It was finally happening. Jared had not been able to come up with an excuse tonight and he ended up sitting squished between Remus and you at Sirius’s favourite karaoke bar.
The introduction had not been as smoothly as you had hoped, with Jared barely saying a word and sporting a look that let everyone know he would rather be anywhere else than here at the moment. But at least he was here. That was progress.
Standing up, you cheered loudly as Sirius jumped of the stage after his performance of ‘Don’t Stop Me Now’ by Queen. The boy held his hand up for a high five as he passed you, sliding into the booth next to your brother.
When you saw no one else making their way up to the machine, you turned to Jared with a beaming smile on your face. “It’s our turn!”
Jared scoffed, still looking down at his drink. “No thanks.”
“Come on, it’ll be fun. I swear,” you kept trying to convince him, smile slightly faltering at his annoyed expression.
“What’s fun about it? It’s stupid and childish, is what it is,” your boyfriend snorted, taking another sip, not even meeting your gaze.
Remus turned, about to say something, but you shot him a quick look. He probably was not about to say something nice and you desperately wanted to avoid another fight tonight.
James poked your side with his finger, happy when your attention was finally on him. You had been trying to keep most of your focus on Jared tonight and he could not lie, he was not used to it not being on him. He did not like it.
“I’ll sing with you,” he smiled at you, happy to see the frown falling off your face. He stood up, waiting for you to scoot out of the booth and shooting a glare at your boyfriend while you were not looking.
James led you up on the stage, facing the screen of the machine as you grabbed two microphones. When he was done picking the song he turned around to face you again, a mischievous glint in his eyes. Your lips quickly spread into another smile when you heard the first notes of the song starting to play.
“You’re just too good to be true, can’t take my eyes off of you,” he started singing, grinning when you joined in.
----------♡----------
The room was spinning when you closed the door behind you, muffling the sounds of the party on the other side. Sliding down to sit on the floor and leaning your heavy head on the door behind you, you fumbled to pull your phone out of your pocket.
You struggled to find Remus’ contact and let out a groan when it went to voicemail. For a moment, you considered calling Sirius, but the thought of willingly entering a car the boy was driving made you feel even more nauseous than the alcohol you had been drinking.
Deciding that James would be your best option, even if you really did not want him to see you in this state, you pressed on his contact.
“Bug?” his voice came through the phone and it surprised you that he had picked up on the second ring.
“Jamie?” you whimpered, hating how broken your voice sounded.
“Are you okay? Where are you?” He sounded fully awake now and you thought you could hear him already rushing out of his room.
“I don’t know. Can you please come pick me up?” Your head was throbbing as you pressed your hand against your forehead.
“Already on my way, bug. But you need to tell me where you are,” he told you, sounding out of breath.
“I’m at a party. At one of Jared’s friend’s houses.” You raked your brain, trying to remember the address but came up with nothing. “I’ll try and send you my location.”
“And where is your boyfriend right now?” James growled and you cringed, not really wanting to talk about what happened.
“We had a fight because he made out with another girl and he left with her,” you sniffed, wiping at your eyes. “Are you almost here? I don’t know anyone here, Jamie. I’m scared.”
James was about to curse out your boyfriend, or rather ex-boyfriend, but he tried to calm down when he heard the shakiness of your voice.
“Is anyone with you?” he asked instead and you were sure he way breaking the speed limit again.
“No. I’m in the bathroom.”
“Stay there, okay? I’m almost there,” he reassured you.
James stayed on the phone with you the whole time he was driving, not even bothering to close the door after he jumped out of his car, rushing up the driveway and into the house. It did not take long for him to find the bathroom you were in and you unlocked the door for him, immediately pressing your face into his chest and throwing your arms around his neck.
“Come on, I’ll get you home,” he mumbled into your hair, scooping you under his arm and leading you out to the car. He buckled you in before climbing into the drivers seat, turning on the heating in your seat.
Your eyes fell closed the moment you noticed the warmth spreading along your back, finding yourself in James’s arms when you opened them again. The boy was carrying you up the stairs bridal style, pushing your door open with his foot.
James turned around as you changed into one of your brother’s old shirts and sleeping shorts, only facing you again when he heard you scramble beneath your blankets.
“Can I have your phone for a second?” he asked as he took a seat next to you, pulling his legs up onto the bed. You pushed your phone towards him without hesitation.
“What for?” you mumbled into your pillow.
“I’m going to text Jared not to contact you again. And then I’ll block him.”
He was expecting some kind of pushback for you, but you just nodded, letting him type out the text. You did not want to talk to him ever again.
When he was done he put your phone on your bedside table, turning back to look at you. Opening your eyes again when you felt his fingers run over your cheek, you found him watching you with a frown.
“I’m sorry he did that to you. He didn’t deserve you,” James muttered softly, brushing a strand of your hair out of your face.
“It’s okay. I don’t think I even liked him that much,” you confessed, feeling guilty even though you technically were not the one who cheated.
“What do you mean?” James perked up at your words.
“I liked someone else much more the whole time. I shouldn’t even have gotten together with him in the first place,” you sighed, the words tumbling out of your mouth without thinking, your mind still hazy from the tequila shots you had taken earlier in the night.
James was quiet for a moment, his hand continuing to run through your hair as you closed your eyes. “Who is it?”
“I can’t tell you that,” you grinned at him sleepily. “You know him.”
“Come on, you can tell me everything. I’ll keep your secret,” he tried again but quickly realized you had fallen asleep. With a sigh, he got up to get you a glass of water and some painkillers, already dreading having to tell Remus about what had happened.
----------♡----------
James was still pouting on the couch when you came back downstairs, hands hidden behind your back. Earlier in the day, Sirius and him had tried to do the dirty dancing lift and somehow ended up ripping James’s bracelet in the process.
The boy had stood frozen as the beads scattered around the room and you had immediately jumped up from your seat to collect them, knowing how important the piece of jewellery was to him. It used to be his mom’s, she had given it to him when he had started high school.
For the last hour you had been holed up in your room, fiddling a new thread through the beads to try and fix it. It did not look as good as it did before, but you hoped it would still cheer him up a little.
“You didn’t want do go with Remus and Sirius?” you asked as you approached him, letting yourself fall into the seat next to him.
It surprised you that he had decided to stay. Throughout the week after he had come to pick you up from that party he had been distant, as if he was avoiding being alone with you. You desperately hoped you had not said anything stupid while you were drunk, most of the night being a mystery to you.
“Didn’t feel like it,” he grumbled, eyes still fixed on the screen playing a modern family episode.
“Well, maybe this will get you into a better mood,” you said and pulled your hand from behind your back, offering him the bracelet with an open palm.
His mouth fell open as he stared at it, not making a move to take it. “I’m sorry I couldn’t get it to look like it did before,” you apologized, thrown off by his unusual silence. “James?”
He looked as if he was contemplating something, before shaking his head and muttering. “Fuck it.”
He rushed forwards, his hand sliding up your neck as he pressed his mouth against yours. Your brain stopped working for a second, shutting down before restarting. Just as he was about to pull back, embarrassed when you did not make a move to kiss him back, you took his face in both of your hands, holding him in place and hungrily pushing your lips back on his.
The small sound escaping his throat almost drove you crazy and you took the chance to slip your tongue into his mouth. He pulled you closer, one of his hands squeezing your thigh as the other found a place in your hair.
It felt as if you had been kissing forever when he eventually pulled back, pushing his face into the crook of your neck, mumbling against your skin. “How am I going to explain this to your brother?”

“can you help me to the hospital wing? i can’t walk.”
all you have to do is look at him and he carefully picks you up from the cold floor. you put your arms around his neck for support. “i was walking up the stairs. and then the stairs moved. and then i fell. you know, i’m glad you’re here, there’s not a single soul on the corridors at this time of day, i was just going to get some books, i have free period–”
“you should watch where you’re walking.” his voice sounds like honey and if you weren’t basically laying in his arms right now, your knees would definitely go weak. but you act unbothered. “maybe i should’ve. but then you wouldn’t carry me. maybe this is a win after all.”
“you’re infuriating.” the small smile that cracks on his face doesn’t go unnoticed, especially when you can see his lips from up close.
“infuriating is my middle name.” there’s a lot of things you can see from up close. his eyelashes are long and he has more freckles than you thought. you like how the ends of his hair twist and fall on his forehead.
“annoying.”
“middle name.”
“stop with the middle names.”
after no more than a minute of silence you speak up again. “you’re so quiet.”
“you think so?” a normal person who doesn’t talk to theodore on the daily basis, probably wouldn’t be able to tell if he’s being sarcastic or not. but you are not a normal person. you pay way too much attention.
you come up with a response and giggle before you even get the chance to say it. “you could say that quiet is your middle nam–”
“if i dropped you right now, i bet you'd be whining like crazy.”
“there’s no need to test that.” you hold on to his neck a little tighter. “besides, you’re lucky i’m not whining right now. i’m in enormous amounts of pain.”
“i can tell. your ankle is twice its normal size.”
“you seem to know my ankles pretty well.” theo chuckles more audibly at your words and your heart flutters.
“that's my secret. i've been staring at them since fifth year.”
you gasp, pretending to be shocked. “i never knew my ankles were so desirable! now you got me worried, that fall might’ve been a threat to my beauty…”
“oh, very much so. you're lucky you had me there to carry you and take care of you in such a tragic moment.”
you never thought hogwarts' insanely big castle was exactly convenient. you’re constantly late for classes, walking takes up half of your daily life and you never know what is creeping around the corner. but now, when you’re being carried through it by the boy you like so much, maybe it’s a blessing in disguise?
“how far away is that wing?” you ask in a whiny tone just to get this attention, but in your mind and in your heart you thank merlin for the long corridors.
“don't you dare even start to complain now, after i carried you all this way.”
“i’m not complaining about you, i’m complaining about the castle. although i’m sure i could find some complaints about you…”
“oh?” he looks at you, slightly amused. “go ahead, do your worst.”
“well, for starters, you make weird comments about my ankles.”
“your ankles are my favorite thing about you.”
“that’s an insult.”
“you’re an insult.”
“MIDDLE NAME.”
he sighs and he calls you insufferable and you smile. you can expect the hospital wing right around the corner, but you wouldn’t mind staying in the pretty boy’s arms for a little longer.

y/n waited and waited but that night, sirius never came by to see her.
the next day, walburga came to their residence to tattle tale about y/n and sirius' rendezvous with muggle kind. y/n's father was furious with the fact that his own pureblood daughter would even think to associate herself with those inferior beings.
he thought he would let it slide that his daughter was sorted into gryffindor instead of slytherin (because there was one house he would've been disappointed the most if she got in it hufflepuff) but time after time it seems that y/n kept disobeying him and he has had enough. he was disgusted to have a blood traitor as a daughter.
y/n was thrown around and even crucio'ed by her own mother and father as they yelled at her about her treachery and their disgust. how she was ungrateful for behaving the way she did when people didn't have the privilege and luxury she had.
y/n was broken. she was scared. the pain and the abuse would've driven her mad but she only had one person in her mind.
where was sirius? was sirius okay? did sirius go through the things she's going through right now? is that why he isn't here?
all thoughts and similar were swirling in her head as she lay in her bed with a tear-stained face.
the 2 pairs of adults thought it would be a good idea to discard sirius and y/n marriage and instead promise her to regulus. by this time, the boy was already an active death eater and people who know the black family well acknowledge that regulus has always been walburga and orion's perfect son.
he was a slytherin. a death eater. an athlete. smart.
a perfect pureblood son.
walburga and y/n's father had a plan. they would say that sirius ran away, with no indication of coming back to her, as he lives comfortably with the potters and never thought about her. that is where regulus would come in and comfort her. of course, the parents knew of y/n's fondness for regulus and vice versa.
y/n sat down on the edge of an elegant pond that her family had in the backyard of their estate. her knees were pulled up, resting her chin on them as she watched the fish swim around. she was tired. both physically and mentally but she was glad to avoid her parents for today and have her time by herself outside of her home.
regulus stood in the house, watching her. he wanted to go up to her so badly, make sure she was okay.
he knew the things she endured, having gone through them himself if he disobeyed his parents. that's why he was their perfect son because he was scared. a coward.
that was another reason why regulus envied sirius. sirius had a courage to him that actively challenged his parents that regulus failed to see in himself.
with the little courage he had, he walked outside and sat next to the girl.
he didn't want to ask if she was okay, that was a stupid question. so he sat in silence, thinking of what to tell her.
"is it true?" y/n asked, never taking her eyes off the pond.
"excuse me?" regulus asked in confusion as he looked at the girl.
"is it true? that sirius left without looking back?"
"yes..." regulus replied as y/n scoffed. "but he loves you, you know that."
"love?" the girl's voice cracked. "look what his love did to me."
it was silent again for a moment before regulus was the first to speak, "I'm sorry about what happened to you, I know how it feels."
y/n refrained from asking if sirius knew what it feels like too. why would she? did he even think of her?
"do you still believe in it? blood superiority I mean," y/n finally turned to the boy beside her who was already looking at her.
"I did, back in the day," regulus confessed. "I thought that was the only right way. I will admit that I was slightly angered when I'd see you and sirius run off with muggleborns and halfbloods like it was normal but after some reflection, I realized that..."
'that I'd still fall in love with you if you were a muggle,' regulus wanted to say but couldn't. he couldn't drop that bomb on her. it was unfair and selfish, she was clearly not in the right state of mind.
"what did you realize, regulus?" y/n asked.
"I realized that either way, we're all just human. it shouldn't matter. this whole thing about a blood being superior to another is stupid," regulus shook his head as he looked away. "it's all just bullshit."
"you're right. it's all just bullshit."
"oh, before I forget," regulus then pulled out a small little thing from his picket and gave it to the older girl. it was the red and black bracelet that she gave sirius the night he ran away, the jewelry clasp bent and broken.
the first day back at hogwarts felt off to the marauders. the absence of their favourite girl was prominent in the atmosphere.
james was worried when sirius showed up to his house wet from the pouring rain and frantic.
sirius was mumbling incoherent words while james got a towel and tried to warm him up. after the boy stopped shivering and calmed himself down, he spilled everything to the glasses-wearing boy.
how his mother found out about his and y/n's date in muggle society. his muggle clothing. how she broke the engagement between them and how she forbade him from ever seeing her. how she burned everything in his room. how she burned his face off the black family tapestry.
james listened to every word that came out of his best friend's mouth. he felt bad for the boy because it was clear to anyone that sirius came from a loveless family.
james also questioned why sirius didn't come with y/n in toe. he thought they were in it till the end of the line so it was hard for him to think that sirius would just leave the girl in the pack of wolves.
that's when sirius confessed something he never told anyone (but james at this very moment) before.
after a heated argument with his mother and a hasty conversation with his father, before he threw the front door open, sirius revealed his family's ties with voldemort and how his father threatened that they had eyes everywhere, so if sirius were to run away and make contact with y/n, they'd retaliate against her.
he couldn't stop thinking about her. sirius felt immense guilt knowing that y/n thought that he'd just run off without her. it was true but he didn't mean it with malicious intent. he wanted nothing more than to take her with him but knowing that he was a target to dark wizards, he couldn't.
the entire summer, sirius couldn't help but think about her the entire time. a lot can happen in 2 months.
so he sat in silence in the express with the rest of the marauders. he saw y/n pass through the corridor and he subconsciously inched closer to the door. he desired to get a glimpse of her and hoped she would look back at him but she didn't. she kept walking.
sirius expected it, of course. he wasn't surprised about regulus trailing behind her, like he always did, and he scoffed.
attempting to wave to y/n, remus raised his hand but after she didn't even glance at the group he put his hand down slowly in confusion.
james had head boy duties to attend to so he left sirius to explain what happened in the summer of 1976 to remus and Peter who were left in the dark. he made sure to promise sirius that he'd check up on y/n when he made his rounds along with lily, who became head girl.
when james saw the girl he was surprised to find her with a nest of snakes, people he thought the girl would never associate herself with. the only gyffindor in a compartment filled with slytherins.
y/n was by the window seat, looking at the scenery as they made their way to hogwarts. james attempted to talk to her but she just ignored him while the other slytherins started to holler at him, not caring that he was the head boy.
he observed the girl while he was getting berated by the snakes around her. she closed in on herself, she was hugging her body like she wanted to make herself small. james was anxious about what could have happened during the summer that turned her into this so quickly. she was always so lively and expressive so it was strange seeing her like this.
seeing how y/n wouldn't budge along with her slytherin companions, he gave her one more reassurance that he was there for her before james left the group to check up on other students. lily watched from the next compartment over that she was checking up on and gave a saddened look when james shook his head at her. lily made sure to make a note to herself that she'd check up on y/n herself when they were in the safe space of their dormitory.
when the glasses-wearing boy met up with his companions in the great hall he noticed that y/n sat on the very edge of the gryffindor table, alone. james relayed what happened in the compartment and sirius couldn't help but feel more guilt. something obviously happened, something bad, and she had to endure it all alone. he wanted nothing more than to go up to the girl and talk to her but he could feel the dark gazes from the slytherin table that were looking at him. spies. it was a warning for sirius to back off.
as the sorting ceremony and the grand feast began, remus never tore his gaze away from y/n. he noticed that she never looked anywhere except her plate the entire time, picking at her fingernails, a nervous habit remus noticed of hers throughout their years of being friends.
that night, y/n rushed to her bed and closed the canopy around her bed, an indication that she didn't want to be disturbed.
still lily made it her mission to talk to the girl, even though it was a one-sided conversation. the head girl was sure to make it clear that she would always be there for her and that whatever she was going through, they could go through together. alas after a moment of silence and no response, lily decided to head to bed.
y/n lay there trying to stifle her sobs, clutching her forearm as fat tears rolled down her cheeks.
"you've been avoiding us," Remus stated when he cornered the girl in a secluded part of the library. y/n jumped up from her seat and turned around to face the boy.
"what are you doing? have I not made it clear that I don't want to be with any of you?" y/n hissed as she quickly gathered her things.
"what's going on with you? everyone is worried."
"nothing is wrong. all of you guys just need to leave me alone!"
"y/n, please. whatever it is we can help!" Remus tried to reason and grabbed her sleeve on impulse when she came to run around him.
"get your hands off me, you halfbreed!" y/n whispered yelled as she flung her hands away like they'd been burned. remus wasn't offended when she called him that, honestly it further proved that something was going on because the y/n he knew would never call him something like that.
that's when something clicked in his mind.
remus grabbed y/n wrist as she struggled and turned her forearm to face him.
there staring back at him was the dark mark. his mark.
"no... y/n no, no, no, no..." he kept repeating as the mark glared back at him. remus looked back up at the girl whose eyes became glossy.
"I told you to leave me alone," she snatched her hand back and turned to leave. "it's for the best."
there was one place y/n thought to go to where she could be alone and that was the astronomy tower. it was a place sirius took her to spend time and bitch about life. she knew the boy never came here without her so she felt secure to be there right now.
"I knew I'd find you here," a recognizable voice called out as the male leaned against the railing beside her.
"regulus... what are you doing here?"
"I came to check up on you," the boy said and turned to face the gryffindor.
"it seems like that's what everyone is doing lately..."
"you should be grateful for having friends that care so much for you."
"I know it's just..."
"just what? tell me what's on your mind."
"I don't think I can do it anymore."
"what do you mean by that?" regulus looked perplexed.
"everything. this mark. I never wanted this life at all," y/n confessed as she collapsed on the ground and leaned on the railing. "I just wish I could leave and live a normal life. a muggle life but I know that as long as I have his mark on me, that wouldn't be possible."
regulus sat down beside the girl, shoulder to shoulder. "I know how you feel... I never wanted this life either."
"I still can't believe you have the mark, i thought minors weren't allowed to take the mark... you're just a boy."
"and you're just a girl..."
"there has to be something that we can do... I don't want to be on this side of the war," y/n whispered to the young boy beside her. even though she felt safe at hogwarts, there were always eyes and ears everywhere.
"I do have some suspicions about the dark lord," regulus began to say as he stood up. "I cannot disclose them here. too much of a risk for someone to eavesdrop. follow me, I know a place where we can talk privately."
"the come and go room," y/n gasped as she entered a room that resembled a home with a fake outside world on the window.
"I found the room of requirements by accident one day," regulus explained. "It is where I feel most safe and at home. whenever I wanted to be alone or study, I would always go here."
"what is it that you wanted to say?" the gryffindor asked as she sat down on the small but cute dining table.
the other followed after her and asked, "have you noticed anything about the dark lord?"
"I mean... he's a bit ugly?" the girl answered in uncertainty.
"that's exactly it," regulus exclaimed. "the dark lord... he doesn't look human at all. I'm wondering why that could be the case. I remember older death eaters gossiping and talking about how the dark lord used to be handsome back when he attended hogwarts so I fail to see how old age can turn him into that."
"Reggie! you're a genius! there definitely is something suspect about that."
"I reckon it has to do with dark magic but I don't know what."
"it's turning him less and less human whatever he's doing. like he's losing his soul."
"without a soul, the body just becomes a corpse."
"the dark lord does look sickly and pale."
"this is dark magic beyond our comprehension. if we can figure it out, we might have an advantage to stop the dark lord."
"where could we start? there are no dark magic books that can be accessible to us unless we sneak into the restricted section in the library."
"that is something we might have to do but our families are already involved in the dark arts. we need to dig around our houses to see if we can find anything about soul splitting."
"my father does have a study where he keeps some books but it would be suspicious if I'm found in there looking through. I'll do it though."
"me too. I've been in my parent's good graces for a while so it wouldn't be uncommon for me to be involved in the dark arts. actually, I think they'd be proud. just be safe and careful, okay?" regulus begged as he reached forward to hold her hand.
"I promise but are you sure you want to do this regulus? it's very dangerous."
"all my life people have made decisions for me. of course I made decisions myself that I regret because I was such a coward. I won't be a coward any longer, I'll be brave."
sirius looked down at the marauders map as he walked through the halls. he wanted to speak with y/n. he needed to see her.
his heart shattered when remus told him about how he saw the dark mark on his girl.
he was completely gutted. he felt frightened, guilty, and hopeless. he was too late.
he didn't think that they would push her into the dark side so soon. sirius already made a plan about how he was going to take the reader, not caring about the huge target on his back, after their graduation and go into hiding.
he felt better knowing that she'd be with him because he had a better chance of protecting her than to leave her with her dark wizard parents but now knowing that she was mark, it was a big foil to his plan.
she didn't even know the truth. the truth of why he ran away and never came back. he would've come back for her. he wanted to. but he knew if he did it wouldn't end well.
before he ran, his father warned him about the consequences of seeing her and since sirius was still underage and couldn't do magic outside of hogwarts without being in serious trouble, he couldn't.
that's why sirius was frantic for y/n to know the truth. he didn't want her to think he didn't care about her because it was quite literally the exact opposite. he cared for her too much. loved her too much. too much to the point that he'd risk it all. all for her. he just needed to tell her because it would break his heart in a million pieces if the girl who held his whole heart in her hands thought that he thought so little of her.
sirius saw the name of the girl he loved at the astronomy tower but what unnerved him was that she wasn't alone. she was with his younger brother, regulus.
the gryffindor boy knew the fastest way to the astronomy tower with all the secret passages that he and the marauders found.
he felt slightly warm inside knowing the spot he showed the girl during their 3rd year was a comfort spot for her... because it was a comfort spot for him too.
sirius was halfway through the secret passage when he saw the two walk in the opposite direction.
he tried to catch up with them as fast as he could but when he reached the seventh floor at hogwarts, their names suddenly disappeared. sirius looked on confused as he rounded the corner and saw an empty hallway. he swore he saw their names just a second ago. where could they have gone?
throughout his last year, sirius couldn't catch the chance to talk to y/n at all. she either actively avoided him, was around a ball of snakes, was with regulus (whom sirius avoided), or simply disappeared after entering the seventh floor.
it was one day near their last day of school when he finally caught her. she was at the black lake, skipping stones with her hands just like a muggle.
"y/n..." sirius called out to his first love. y/n visibly froze when she heard his voice. when sirius saw her ready to run away, he called out to her again. "y/n wait! talk to me please."
the girl didn't say anything but made no move to run away.
"that night. whatever you thought, it isn't what happened," sirius began to clarify. "never in my life would I ever leave without you willingly. trust me I wanted to go back to you, I swear on my life. before I could leave my house my father slammed the door close and said that they had spies everywhere and if I were to make contact with you, they'd hurt you. I never truly felt like a coward until that day because I knew what my family was capable of and I was afraid that if I did come to you that night, I wouldn't be able to shield you. after that night, I never stopped thinking about you. you were what filled my mind every day during that summer and it drove me insane not knowing if you were safe or not. it broke me that day in the express when I saw you through the glass of my compartment and you looked so broken, so soulless. I couldn't help but think that I did this to you and I did. remus told me already and you know what? I don't care. I don't care that you're a death eater because I know this isn't you, this isn't what you wanted. I've trained day and night to be the best wizard that I could be. I'm stronger now than I was a year ago so please. please come with me after graduation and let me protect you like i promised when we were young. you can run away from this life and stay with me and the other marauders like you were always meant to."
nothing but the slush of water and the birds chirping was heard after sirius' outburst. sirius started to feel uncomfortable and insecure about the silence. never has he ever opened up like this before and it took a lot of courage for him to do so but he shifted on his feet uncomfortably as y/n said nothing but create little crescents on her palms.
"please say anything. laugh at me, yell at me, hit me, I don't care. just please say something," sirius begged as he felt the blood pumping in his ears. he was so nervous and overwhelmed.
"no."
"no...? what do you mean no?"
"sirius I can't..."
"what are you saying? what do you mean you can't? the boys and I don't care that you're a death eater, we'll help you escape."
"it's not that, sirius. I can't run away with you."
"but why? can't you just tell me?"
"no sirius, I can't. just please respect that."
"is it regulus? have you fallen for him?" sirius clenched his jaw as he said those words.
"what? no, no. I haven't."
"I see you've chosen your side, l/n."
it's been a few years since then.
james and lily got married and were about to have their first baby.
the marauders and lily were deeply grieved with the fact that y/n couldn't be there for james and lily's wedding and the birth of their child but they always left a seat open for her during get-togethers if one day she happened to show up. sirius never stopped loving y/n, his heart was always open to her.
they don't know what happened to y/n after graduation along with regulus black. they were informed by a little birdie that regulus dropped out of hogwarts before his last year and that he and y/n were both announced missing.
in reality, regulus and y/n found out the truth about voldemort. regulus, in his frantic state, came to y/n with crucial information.
regulus revealed that the dark lord took his house elf, kreacher, to this crystal cave and made him drink this foul liquid that would protect the horcrux that he made. regulus was horrified by the dark lord's cruelty regarding the horcruxes and the suffering he forced upon his house elf.
regulus and y/n made it their goal to go back to that cave, with the help of kreacher, and destroy the horcrux, knowing it'll weaken voldemort.
the house elf apparated his younger master and his betrothed into the dark and eerie cave. they were now in front of the basin where the dark liquid stared back at them, taunting them to drink it.
"I'll drink it," y/n stated as she grabbed for the shell and scooped the black liquid onto it.
"y/n, no. I can't let you do that, let me do it," regulus tried to reason.
"Reggie, it's okay. I'm older I should do it, if anything were to happen to me just promise me that you'll take the locket and destroy it."
"no, let me do it, please. you have so much to live for, your family is waiting for you," regulus was referring to the marauders who were all in the potter's house, checking up on lily's pregnancy.
"young masters, let kreacher do it," the house elf piped up to the two humans who were arguing with each other. "kreacher lives to serve the noble house of black. let kreacher drink it so the young master and his betrothed can take the locket and destroy it."
"kreacher you can die! you barely survived the first time, it's unlikely you'll survive this time."
"then kreacher dies," the house elf jumped up to the basin and grabbed the shell out of y/n's hand and started drinking the liquid.
the sound of gagging and screaming echoed throughout the cave and the two humans watched helplessly as kreacher drank the liquid.
"regulus! the locket!" y/n exclaimed as she took salazar slytherins locket in her hands. she looked at regulus and nodded at him, signalling him to continue their plan.
regulus placed a fake locket with a note inside it so it could delay time if voldemort were to find out that his real horcrux was in danger.
their little moment came to a stop as they heard noises coming from the water. regulus and y/n turned around to find skeletal creatures crawling out of the deep lake.
"y/n! stay right behind me!" regulus demanded as he held out a hand towards the girl and his wand was in front of him, ready to battle.
"depulso!" regulus yelled but it did little to nothing as the 3 of them were surrounded by the inferi.
y/n kicked one of the inferius away from her when they grabbed her ankle but it only momentarily stopped them before they continued their pursuit.
"regulus, no!" y/n screamed out when she saw regulus get dragged by several inferi into the water. she was torn between going to kreacher who was passed out on the floor or regulus who was being dragged underwater. ultimately she made her choice as she dove into the cold cave water to retrieve the young boy. she knew kreacher would rather she choose regulus over him anyway.
y/n fought hard to kick the inferi away from regulus so they could apparate away. as y/n held on to regulus, he widened his eyes when he saw an inferius grab her shoulder but it was too late as she was in the process of apparating.
they landed on the ground and the impact helped regulus throw up some water he inhaled but y/n's scream got him scrambling towards her.
during apparating the sudden grab from the inferi caused her to lose focus which resorted to a splinch. she was only missing a small part of her arm which was a relief because it could've easily been her whole arm.
regulus tore off a bit of his shirt and quickly wrapped it around y/n's wound as he tried to comfort her. it wouldn't do much but hopefully, it would stop the bleeding.
regulus picked y/n up bridal style and realized he was in an unknown neighbourhood. not just any neighbourhood but a muggle neighbourhood.
the boy walked around trying to find any sort of help he could get but with such an unfamiliar location, it was hard.
"oh my goodness! Harold come see this!" a female voice said.
regulus turned to see an old woman on the porch of her house with a man emerging from the door.
"oh dear! do you children need help!" the old man came rushing down to the two wizards and witches.
"yes please help her, she's hurt," regulus begged as he was ushered towards the elderly couple's house. that's when y/n realized this was the neighbourhood james took her and the marauders, along with lily, during their spring break back in sixth year. it was also the same elderly couple she saw when they were walking to the cliff.
"what did you kids do to get her in such a bad state?" the elderly woman scolded as they got to their living room and regulus set her down gently on the couch while the old man went to the bathroom to get a first aid kit.
"the cliff. we were stupid and decided to jump off it for fun and I got hurt," y/n said quickly while regulus looked surprised by her quick thinking. it would explain why she got hurt and why they were both wet head to two.
"ahhh you youths! it's about time the town closes the cliffside!" the elderly woman scoffed.
the old man came back with the first aid kit and the woman got to work with y/n's arm while the man ushered regulus to change into some clean and dry clothes.
regulus and y/n stayed at the nice elderly couple's house for a few weeks as they recovered. regulus was surprised by their generous hospitality but he figured they were an old couple that had too much time on their hands.
the two magical beings looked on in amusement as they watched moving pictures on a rectangular device.
sure they had moving photographs but they normally move for a couple of seconds but never for hours with sounds like the one they're seeing right now. muggles were truly extraordinary beings.
the two of them felt comfortable in their home. this was the life y/n always wanted.
"maybe we should just stay here, y/n. grow old..." regulus stated softly and turned to the girl who was staring at the locket in her hands.
---
voldemort sat at the long table in the blacks home, his trusty snake by his side. walburga and orion black, alongside y/n parents, looked dishevelled and pained as they sat at the table as well.
"if any of you see regulus black, y/n l/n, and sirius black during battle," the dark lord's icy voice said. "kill them first."
p.s the room of requirements that shows up is a home regulus hopes to have with y/n ☹️

day twenty-two: sirius black your coffee shop gets a new barista. he’s very enthusiastic | grumpy!reader and sunshine!sirius, fluff | 1k
The thing you like most about your coffee shop is that no one talks to you. It’s a fairly quiet place — one of those small, hole-in-the-walls that doesn’t have wifi or much but a simple menu and some large arm chairs. The only people who stick around are old people reading books and interesting characters scrawling away in journals. It’s no nonsense. You go pretty much every day.
The bell-less door opens and you are greeted with…laughter?
That can’t be right.
You make your way to the register and spot the culprit immedietly: a new barista. He’s — well. He’s exactly your type. Tall, arms inked from knuckles to shoulder in interesting designs, ears and nose pierced with golden hoops. His riotous black curls are half-up half-down and you’re pretty sure he’s wearing eyeliner.
Well, this just got interesting.
“Hello,” he says. “What can I get you?”
No one has asked you what you want in almost a year. It’s not that they don’t like you. You just get the same thing every time, so predictable that the other baristas have it ready for you by the time you pay them. But that’s not this guy’s fault. He’s new.
“Black coffee, please,” you say patiently. He pulls a cardboard cup off of the stack next to him. His name tag reads Sirius in block letters.
He almost taps the price into the register but he pauses and looks at you. He tilts his head like he’s trying to see through you. You keep your stare level and face neutral. “Are you sure?” he asks.
Okay, that cracks you a little bit. You raise your eyebrows. “What?”
“We’ve got some great fall drinks,” he says. “The apple cider is honestly sinful. Or, if you really need caffeine, we’ve got this thing called a death cream that keeps me awake for —”
“Black coffee is fine.” It comes out a little harsher than you meant, but he’s not put off.
He just shrugs. “Whatever you want.”
You pay and leave once he’s filled the cup. “Thanks.” You let him put the coffee on the counter before you grab it so you don’t have to touch. Again, he’s not bothered.
“See you soon!”
An eager new barista is not enough to keep you from your coffee, so you do indeed see him soon.
The next day.
He greets you like an old friend. “Hey, it’s black coffee!” he says, though you’ve met…once.
“Oh, great,” you mutter. No one in the shop pays you any mind.
It’s a shame that this guy — Sirius, you remind yourself — is so energetic because he’s very much your type otherwise. You find that men like him get tired with your attitude sooner rather than later.
“What’ll it be today?” he asks. He’s got a bandana around his head and a tight-fitting waffled shirt. You swallow and will yourself to retain your composure.
“Guess,” you say.
A line has formed behind you. If he wants to take his time, that’s his business, but you’re not sure how you feel that he’s making everyone wait just to talk to you.
“A maple latte,” he says, snapping his fingers.
You just look at him. His smile doesn’t slip as he pulls a cup from the tower.
“Black coffee?” he asks.
“Please.” He sighs dramatically.
You let yourself take it directly from his hand this time.
This becomes routine. Sirius is there every time you go in and you do this dance every time. He guesses another drink, tries to convince you to to get it, fails, and then gives you your black coffee.
It’s actually kind of fun. Well, you’re having fun with it, and hey, he’s cute and it’s almost like flirting. If you have a bit of a crush on him, that’s your business. It’s not like he knows anything about you other than what you look like and what your drink order is. He doesn’t even know your name!
But after weeks and weeks, after he’s suggested pretty much everything on the menu, he doesn’t even try.
“Hey,” he calls, when you walk in. He’s got your coffee ready by the time you step up to the register.
You blink at him as he reads off the price.
“No suggestion today?” you asks. It hurts a bit. He got tired of you sooner than you thought he would.
“Oh,” he says. His dark eyes meet yours. “I…thought it was annoying you. Since you never took me up on it.”
You chew on your cheek. “It wasn’t annoying me, Sirius,” you say. “I just won’t take you up on it because I like black coffee. That’s just how I am.”
Sirius blinks. “You know my name?”
You point to his name tag. He laughs breathlessly, mirth creeping back into his voice.
“Obviously,” he mutters. “Look,” he says, leaning in. “I like how you are. I’ve only been trying to get you to order something that takes more time so I can ask for your name and write it on the cup. No one here knows it because you always get black coffee and leave.”
It’s your turn to blink. You probably look like a fish, eyes wide and mouth opening and closing.
“Oh,” you say. He wants your name? “Why didn’t you just ask?”
He laughs properly, loudly and fully like the first day you saw him. “I guess that would have been much easier.”
Well, you can fix this. “Can I have your marker?”
He hands it over with a curious smile. You pick up your coffee and carefully write your name on the side in capital letters, then show him.
Sirius repeats it out loud, then motions for the marker back. You pass it over and he takes your coffee from you to write something else.
When he turns it toward you, you see he’s written a phone number.
“Mine,” he says. “Maybe you’ll call me?”
You take the cup from him, making sure to brush your fingers with his.
“Maybe I will.” You give him a rare smile and he beams back. “See you later, Sirius.”
He winks.
You’re definetly going to call him.

Sirius Black x fem!reader
She was in love with him. He never felt the same
1.7k
tw: mention of Y/n, slight swearing
This has been in my drafts since August. The ending is sloppy.
It had been going on for years now. Ever since she'd first saw him, that September 1st on platform 9¾, she'd only ever had eyes for him.
Stolen glances, innocent brushes of her hand against his, so many signs and yet he never picked up any of them.
Sirius Black was too focused on other girls to notice his best friend pinning after him, even now, after all these years. And yet her feelings never changed.
"So, who's that?" James teasingly asked the black haired boy, glancing towards a ravenclaw girl in their year, who was practically eyefucking Sirius from across the room.
"Jessica Monroe" Sirius smirked, then continued eating his breakfast. "Dude, that's like, the 3rd one this month" Remus pointed out.
"It's not my fault the ladies can't resist me"
"And as it seems, neither can you" Peter chimed in. "At least n/n here hasn't fallen for your charms yet" James joked, eyes set on the only girl in their friend group.
"As if!" She laughed, trying to cover up the rosy color of her cheeks.
Little did James know how wrong he had been.
It wasn’t until two weeks later when things really started going downhill. She had just returned from her perfect's duties when she found Sirius waiting for her in the common room. It was well past midnight and everyone had retired to their dorms long ago.
"Finally, I've been waiting for you for hours" the boy jumped up from his spot on the couch once he saw her. She stared at him confused. He gently grabbed her wrist and dragged her to sit beside him as he plopped himself on the couch.
"What are you even doing down here at this time?"
Sirius ignored her question. "I need to talk to you."
"Well, couldn't it wait until the morning? I'm exhausted" She groaned, leaning her head back on the couch.
He ignored her again.
"I realized something."
His words had her sitting straighter in mere seconds.
Had he finally figured out her feelings for him?
She wasn’t exactly subtle about them either.
He must know.
Sirius looked at her. Whatever it was she was suspecting at that moment could have never even come close to what was yet to come.
"I've been sleeping with Thalia" he breathed out.
It wasn’t unusual for Sirius to sleep with different girls then dump them within the course of the next week. Most of the time he didn’t even mention who it was he was having sex with, so why would bringing her up now?
"Okay?"
She finally said not knowing how else to respond.
"The thing is, I want us to be more. As in, I actually have feelings for her. She makes me the happiest just by smiling at me. So much that makes me want to stay by her side until the end of my days."
"I guess what I'm trying to say is that I'm in love with her. Hopelessly and utterly in love."
And it was in that moment when the little candle of hope she had burned out.
The thing was, that even if Sirius was with other girls, it never lasted long simply because he had never loved any of them. The flame was just weaker, flickering.
And now there he was, talking about how he couldn't imagine a world without the blonde Gryffindor, going as far as to admit being in love with her. There was no candle anymore, only a paddle of melted wax where it once had been.
The girl in front of him, blinked back tears as she shook her head. "I want her to ask her on a date '' Sirius continued.
"But when I do, I want it to be perfect. This is where I need your help. You know her better than me, you can tell me what she likes, for example which kind of flowers does she like the most? And what’s her favorite color? Does she prefer a picnic by the black lake or stargazing at the astronomy tower?" the boy continued rambling until the Y/n stopped him.
And as much as it hurt her to do so, she did value his happiness more than hers. In the end she agreed to help him.
It had been three weeks since Sirius and Thalia started dating. And it was safe to say they were stuck to the honeymoon phase.
The two couldn't keep their hands off of each other. They were always touching somehow and every chance they got to kiss, they did. They'd go on dates every other day and more often than not they slept in each other's bed, at the point where Remus had started complaining that she was practically living in their dorm.
Not to mention that they were always together. And when they weren't, which was a rare occurrence, all Sirius could do was talk about her.
She didn’t blame him. Thalia was a girl made out of angel dust, the prettiest and kindest one could ever be. She had to be the sweetest thing to ever walk on this earth.
Yet Y/n couldn’t help but envy her. The blonde was everything she wasn’t.
Once the two reached their one month anniversary it had started to become frustrating. And the closer the couple grew, the further the two friends slipped apart.
Sirius didn’t know what had happened between them. One second she was there, the other one she was gone, completely out of sight. It seemed to him that earth might as well have swallowed her whole and left no trace behind.
In the months following Sirius and Thalia getting together, Y/n had avoided him at any and every cost. She still hung out with the rest of the marauders, they were her best friends after all just not when Sirius was around.
Instead she’d now hang out more with Lily, Marlene and Mary, the three growing closer ever since she started sitting with them at dinner. She’d joke about how her and Marlene were practically married at this point and she’d even had made friends with Regulus (or something along those lines) after finding him up at the astronomy tower.
To say things had changed was an understatement.
It was a slow progress too. Yet Sirius failed to notice it. Until now.
Him and Thalia had had their first argument the night before. It was unusual for the two to fight at all, much less not be on talking terms. Sirius needed to talk to his best friend but how could he do that when she was nowhere to be found.
It was in the common room, well after dinner when Sirius managed to spot her. She was sitting next to Peter, helping him with his potion’s essay.
“Hey” he greeted taking a seat opposite her. She muttered a quiet ‘hi’ back but didn’t look up.
He sat in silence for a little while, waiting for them to finish. When he finally decided he couldn't wait anymore, he cleared his throat. The two looked up at him confused. “Anything you need Sirius?” she asked, rather coldly.
He wasn’t used to her calling him by his first name. It was either Siri or pads and sometimes ‘my star’ but never just plain Sirius. “Yes, actually. I need to talk to you.”
“Well can’t it wait. I have to help Pete with this and then I promised Lily I would put her hair into French braids” she said, trying to make up a lie to avoid him. She didn’t even know how to do French braids.
“It won’t take long, I promise”
“Fine,” She sighed. “What do you want to talk about?”
“Not here” he said, motioning for her to get up before doing so himself. He guided her upstairs to his and the boy’s dorm room. It had been a while since she’d last been there. And yet nothing had changed.
“What is going on with you?” Sirius asked after shutting the door closed and turning to her.
“What? Nothing. Everything is perfectly normal” the girl shrugged trying to play it off.
“Except it isn’t. You are never around anymore. We never talk anymore, you don’t even sit with us in the dining hall. I haven’t seen you since the last full moon and even then you didn’t talk to me. You were my best friend. Us against the world, remember? What the hell happened to us? What the hell happened to you n/n'' The more he spoke the more his voice rose.
“No” she shook her head.
“What do you mean no?” He asked, frustrated.
“Sirius, you were the one who started pulling away. After you got with Thalia you were always with her. And when you weren’t it was your main, not to say only, topic of discussion.”
“That’s not true” he argued.
“Yes it is! Tell me Sirius had you even realized I wasn’t around you as much before today?” she defended.
She was right. He hadn’t.
“And you know what’s worse? I was in love with you. I have been in love with you since the first day on the train.”
She has done it now.
“Do you even know how fucking hard it is? Listening to someone you love constantly about someone else?”
Silence. She hadn't intended to say this but she couldn't have controlled it. She had finally reached her limit.
Sirius looked down at the floor. He hadn't expected to hear such words from her yet he felt extremely guilty.
This was it. Her entire world came crumbling down and it was clear that whatever hope she had for salvaging their friendship was now gone. She had ruined it.
She looked up. Sirius' gaze was still pinned to the floor. It hurt her that he wouldn't even look at her.
She left the room slamming the door shut behind her. There were too many unanswered questions, more than before. There was confusion and then there were mixed feelings. It seemed that nothing was certain anymore.
And in that moment her heart stopped. And she knew, her heart wouldn't start anymore, at least not for him.
