There was a strength in knowing things that Milli had forgotten. Of course she knew how to build a rifle...but being competent at firing one was a new thing. It was easy -- even gratifying -- to get up early to practice with rifle and pistols each morning. It was slow, but she was becoming the woman she wanted to be.

Later that night, after the near-violence and hysterics that came once most everyone had left, Milli finally got around to opening the package from Syrean. She pulled it out with a soft exclamation of wonder. Throane looked up from where he'd been making tea. "What is it?" he asked.

She held it up so he could see it. "It's a little clockwork bee," Milli said happily. She grinned at him. "Everyone keeps giving me bees. But it's beautiful," she said, admiring it.

He went back to his tea-makings, then to his spot on the floor that she still hadn't convinced him to give up, while she just stared at the gift, turning it over and over in her fingers. Figuring out how it worked was the fun part.

To Milli
