He thinks he's the best at everything because he was literally genetically designed to be but resents that he was made this way and isn't it no wonder that he falters at the last minute from things that would draw too much attention (valedictorian, Carrington), and isn't it no wonder he can't handle failure to save someone and-

the fact that one of the few times we see Julian close to crying in DS9 is when he's pointing a gun at Garak, prepared to shoot him, and that the tears are in his eyes before Garak starts being especially horrible to him, is something I certainly think of at times and shall again
