Elizabeth Hopper has never had what one would consider an easy life. At the tender age of twelve, she lost her younger sister, Sara, to cancer, prompting her parents to get a divorce and forcing her to choose between them. Being a typical daddy’s girl, it came as no surprise that she chose to go with her father back to Hawkins, Indiana, where she promptly befriended the number one outcast, Jonathan Byers.

Four years later, it’s the start of her Sophomore year, and her life has finally seemed to settle down… that is until Will goes missing, Joyce seemingly loses her mind, Nancy Wheeler joins their little outcast duo, and, oh yeah, a literal monster from another dimension ends up in their small town on a hunting spree.

“The world obviously hates me and doesn’t want me to have an easy life. It’s the only explanation.”

Mattie’s eyes snapped open. She rapidly blinked as she struggled to gain her bearings.

She tentatively walked through the empty corridor. Her eyes were fixed on the door that was moving closer towards her. Her hand wrapped around the handle and with a smooth motion she shoved her way through the door.

As Mattie fell into the room, it took her a few seconds to comprehend where she actually was. It all looked the same. The photo frames, the furniture. The smell of the homes was still the same – coffee and burnt toast.

Mattie’s eyes landed on the figure sitting at the head of the dining table. Her mother. Marcella Louvel hadn’t aged a day.

“Mom?” Mattie whimpered, not really sure if it was really her.

To the town of Hawkins, Indiana, Ashley Keegan was wallpaper—omnipresent, quiet, and rarely acknowledged.  Hell, nobody even looked her in the eye.  After a car accident claimed her father and golden boy older brother, they didn’t quite know how to.  But that was okay.  Between school and her part-time jobs, she didn’t have the time for them.  Their mortgage needed two incomes, and her mom could only manage 1.3 of those.  Her paper route, the arcade, that part-time library gig, and some seasonal work made up about 0.5…..yeah, things could be better.  Their one regular visitor was the vulture of a realtor itching to plant a ‘for sale’ sign in their front lawn.

The thing about being wallpaper—being part of the background nobody ever notices—the thing is you get to notice things.  For years Ash Keegan knew next to everything about Hawkins, Indiana.  Whose marriages were unhappy, who wasn’t paying their bills (other than her mother), who was being bullied, who really drove old man Kapowski’s tractor into the lake…the gossip she had would make the local housewives drool more than a tiramisu.  Until Will Byers disappeared.  Government vans, a fake body, an abruptly un-dead kid…she didn’t know anything about that.  Thank God.  She already had about four full plates and was trying to balance a fifth in the crook of her elbow.

But that was 1983.  This was 1984, a George Orwell of a different story.  Creditors and college applications loomed.  Her brother’s room still looked the same.  A war between pumpkin patch dynasties cost her the fall job she counted on.  Also, the trash cans cans next door were haunted, neighbor kid Dustin got a bizarre new pet, and suddenly elementary school-playmate/current prom king Steve Harrington was babysitting him?  Dustin’s mom hadn’t asked her to babysit him in months.  Not quite a government conspiracy, but the subtleness rang just as sinister.  

Halloween brought out the weirdest shit.
