you were not new to the feeling of danger that sometimes came with working the night shift. you really couldn’t help it. your classes were during the daytime, so it left you having to work weekends and nights on the weekdays. the nighttimes could get crazy — drunk people from the bars down the street, guys who didn’t know any boundaries, and just a lot of unpredictable problems that occurred after the witching hour. 

it usually wasn’t a problem. your older brother jeonghan would pick you up on nights you worked late, since the buses around there stopped running around ten o’clock pm. but, jeonghan had an ill-timed meeting with his supervisor at his work. he had started his first paid internship (which was a very big deal!), so there was no way that he could get out of that one scot-free. he was usually good at asking you if you had another ride besides him, but that internship was kicking his ass. he was working even later than you. 

and, well, it was nearing eleven o’clock pm. the manager had an unexpected emergency and had to leave a bit early, so he left you with the keys. you were working the opening shift the next day, so he didn’t see a problem with it. but, now, it was just you and your other coworker chan. he lived right around the corner, so he would be walking home. 

your apartment wasn’t far from the cafe either. it was only a five minute walk to the subway then a quick 3 stops until you got out and had to walk another 5 minutes to your apartment building. it was not that bad for the city you lived in. the close proximity to your apartment was what drove you to apply to work at that cafe. 

in the last hour of your shift, the cafe was closed to the public and you were cleaning with chan. your friendly coworker had offered to at least walk you to the subway station and wait with you, but it was in the exact opposite direction of his apartment, so you declined. just for tonight, you would have to suck it up. you hoped that you could at least catch the last train 

as if the universe wanted to prove you wrong, the familiar sound of your ringtone chimed from your back pocket. the contact name ‘seungcheol’ glared up at you. choi seungcheol, the person calling you, was one of your brother’s childhood best friends (the other being hong joshua). he was one of the nicer one of your brother’s friends that included you in their fun. joshua just liked to make fun of you with jeonghan. 

holding your phone up to your ear with your shoulder, you answered the phone while you continued to wipe down the tables. (chan was doing the dishes in the back.) “hello? what’s up, cheol oppa?” 

“hey y/n, just wondering what you were doing,” he answered. 

you couldn’t help the blush that crept up to your cheeks, no matter how hard you tried to fight it back down. yeah, he had been your first love growing up. it was hard to forget about your past feelings that you gave up on as you grew older. it was even harder to forget when he would say things like, “just wondering what you were doing.”  ugh! 

“i’m still working right now. i’m about to clock out and leave soon, though,” you told him. “i guess you’re really bored if you’re calling me.” 

“ah, stop it,” seungcheol laughed on the other end of the line. “i can’t wonder what you’re doing? anyways, tell jeonghan when he picks you up to come over to my place. i made way too much food, so you guys should come eat it.” 

you tried to ignore the butterflies in your stomach. “liar,” you said in a teasing voice. “just say you wanted company. anyways, jeonghan’s working late, so he’s not picking me up.” 

“who is? did he ask shua?” he asked you. 

for a second, you debated on whether or not to lie to him and just say chan or your [nonexistent] manager was taking you home so he wouldn’t worry. you decided against it. “mmm, no. i’m just going to take the subway. it’s not far, and--” 

your words were cut off by his. “nope.” you had to pause, wondering what he was talking about. his words continued through the line. “you are definitely not walking alone on those streets at night,” seungcheol told you, his tone suddenly becoming stern and serious. you could hear the rustling on his end and the chiming of his keys. “you wait for me, got it?” 

“oh wait, oppa, you don’t have to,” you said to him, panicked. “i’ll be fine.” 

“yeah, you’ll be fine, my ass. i’m the one who won’t be fine,” seungcheol grumbled. “stay put, okay? i’m coming.” 

the line went dead, and you stood there to take it in for a second. you pursed your lips while you closed your eyes, fighting the grin that threatened to hijack your face. your ears were red hot, and your body was suddenly filled with energy, despite having worked a busy closing shift. 

when you and chan locked the doors, seungcheol’s car pulled up to the street right in front of the cafe. he rolled the windows down and said with a smile, “hey, i’m here.” 

you completely forgot about chan. your eyes could only gravitate towards him, a soft smile on your face. “hey, thanks for coming. you didn’t have to, you know.” you climbed into the passenger seat, only then remembering to wave ‘bye’ to your coworker. the smell of his cologne surrounded you as you sat next to him. “i could’ve called mina and asked her too.” (mina’s your best friend.) 

“it’s okay, you have me,” seungcheol replied, smiling over at you before his eyes quickly went back to the road. “you’ve always had me.” 

“yeah, i do, don’t i?” you said, smiling into your lap. you couldn’t fight it off this time. 

“y’know, my offer for some food at my place is not off the table,” seungcheol said. “we don’t even have to invite jeonghan.” 

“really?” you mused. “you like me that much?” 

his car stopped at the red light. his head turned to you, your eyes meeting under the ambience of the city lights and the sheen of soft red on your faces. you almost got lost in them, but the surprise from how serious and truthful he looked brought you back. 

“yeah, i like you that much.”

He's a little taken aback by the sudden question, but there's something quiet and unsure in your voice, so he softens and smiles. 

"Well..." he begins thoughtfully, "I love you because you're you."

You sniff, disappointed. "That's such a terrible answer."

Seungcheol laughs. "But it's true. I love you because you laugh at my stupid jokes, and you make me laugh at yours. I love you because you've helped me get through life and be where I am now, and I've helped you too. I love you because you've done all these things, and so much more."

He presses a kiss to your forehead. "I love you because it's you who's done all these things with me, and for me. Not anyone else, but you. I love you for loving me."

You're not looking at him, more focused on playing with his fingers on the armrest, but he smiles down at you anyway, and he knows the fondness is tangible in his gaze. 

"I love you, Y/N. Always."

That makes you smile, looking up at him finally, and your eyes are sparkling and he really, really does love you. "I love you too."

this is essentially an anime that’s about soccer! but, the characters’ own personalities were constantly being challenged. the basis is: you have to adapt or evolve or you don’t make the cut. you can’t just win a game in a clear-cut way -- you have to learn about the way people are and how they tend to behave. you have to be able to trust your team and know their strengths/weaknesses as well. as a master strategist, this is very fitting of jeonghan!

you never really know what to expect next. at first, you kind of expect either an edgy, thrilling story about a spy or a heartwarming story about a makeshift family. but, you end up getting both. truly, you never really expect what’s coming next. very silly, but also sweet. it really just shows you that you never know what anyone is thinking inside their heads…

throwing yourself into something new is never easy. but, it’s easier when you have people you can lean on next to you! jun trusted in himself and the other members of seventeen as he broke into the kpop idol industry. usagi trusted herself, her sailor friends, and tuxedo mask in order to become a better sailor moon every day. plus, jun is sooo babygirl.

what a classic. just like how hoshi was a tiger this whole time after hiding behind his hamster persona, tamaki suoh hides his true feelings for the sake of others. only when he is truly himself around his friends and the people he loves is when he shines. a great comedic piece about being yourself and always doing what you love.

komi can’t communicate

since the story revolves around komi, a soft-spoken and very shy individual who is very beautiful and her new friend who wants to help her out, the altruistic vibes suit wonwoo. seventeen helped wonwoo become more outspoken, just like tadano helps komi with her communication skills. as someone who is more introverted himself, i think wonwoo represents how sometimes you need to rely on others to get out of your shell!

k-on! 

a very cute and wholesome story about people who love music and just want to perform well for each other! i think a very integral part of uri jihoonie is his love of music. as these four girls discover their love for music and what it can do for themselves and others, they flourish as people too. woozi always puts his heart and soul into music, so it’s natural that an anime that can reflect that would be perfect for him.

this anime is so silly! it’s layered with meaningful and emotional arcs as well. over time, it only gets more and more deeply connected to you. luffy always says he’ll do anything for his crew, or his closest friends. this anime is all about friendship and the journey that you have in your life together with them, making it the perfect anime for dokyeom. 

myungho

toilet-bound hanako-kun 

the plot of this anime is very complex and mysterious, which is the impression that myungho gives off at first glance. his calm and eye-catching demeanor makes it an even better surprise when you find out how kind and silly he is. this story teaches you how even a second glance is not enough and that there is often more than what meets the eye. the cute drawing style and romantic undertones also suit myungho very well! 

mingyu 

jujutsu kaisen 

at heart, mingyu is someone that loves his friends. in the jujutsu world, the only comfort they really have is within each other. the friendship between yuuji, megumi, and nobara really shape the story in the beginning. as you get to know more, you realize that there’s a lot more that goes on. mingyu is not only a great looking guy, he’s very talented, smart, tits like toji, good at cooking, and etc. (he would also be a gojo stan.) he eats up the baseball episode! this story shows that the connections between people are crucial and to cherish the moments you have with the people around you! 

seungkwan 

haikyuu

one of the best comfort animes of all time, so of course, this is perfect for seungkwan. there’s a lot of emphasis on learning from mistakes, leaning on the people around you, and playing to your strengths. weaknesses are only there to show how much you can grow, and dreams are meant to be lived up to! friendship, the passion you have, and determination are very important aspects of life. haikyuu really teaches us to love the people around us, just like how seungkwan loves seventeen.

my hero academia 

being different and being quirky is not a weakness -- it’s a strength. everyone has their own unique traits and abilities. even if they’re not visible to the naked eye, everyone’s worth is beyond measurement. making friends that appreciate you, having a dream to look forward to, and leaning into those eccentricities instead of trying to run away from them is what my hero academia is about. vernon embodies this completely!

there’s truly a lot of different layers to this anime, but the most noticeable is how hard everyone works towards their goals… no matter what they may be. whether they started from scratch or had talent flowing through their blood, everyone stays true to their beliefs and achieves their goals with hard work. dino is so incredibly hard-working, so this matches very well.

grocery shopping with your boyfriend was always fun. he always found a way to cheer you up. a lot of things reminded him of you, and you would be the first to find out. dating dokyeom has always been that -- fun. you can’t count the amount of times he has tugged on your sleeve and said, “hey, y/n, doesn’t this remind you of--” and proceeded to remind you of a funny moment you had together. it was almost impossible to stop smiling around him. 

but sometimes the smile didn’t stay…. and it was usually because you cannot take this man anywhere. 

“we should get this too,” dokyeom said, grabbing another bag of chips and dropping it in the cart. “limited edition holiday flavor!” 

without waiting for your response, he grabbed another box on the shelf. “and this one,” dokyeom added in again, holding up a box of rice crackers. “you like these when it’s cold outside.” 

you wonder how you got here. you were supposed to go make a quick grocery trip alone before dinner since your boyfriend was still out with his friends. he wasn’t due back until right before dinner, so you still had time to run to grab a bottle of salt and sesame seeds. 

your plans were derailed when you saw dokyeom and his friends on the walk over to the grocery store. as soon as he saw you, his eyes lit up, bid his friends a quick good-bye, and ran over to trap you in a big hug. he was always sooo happy to see you. if you didn’t know any better, you would be able to see his lil’ tail wagging back and forth. 

and that’s how you ended up at the grocery store with your boyfriend with a cart full of snacks, chips, and no salt or sesame seeds. 

you watched him hug his cookies as he studied the aisle once again. “mmm, y/n, i think we should get these chips too. they’re your favorite, right?” 

“kyeom, we need salt and sesame seeds,” you told him, eyeing the lack of ingredients in the cart that you came for. 

his head whipped around to you, puppy eyes activated. “are these not your favorite anymore?” he asked you, worried about his choice of chips. the boxes of cookies were dropped into the cart immediately, but his hands were reaching for the chips already. 

your heart melted, unable to stay annoyed at him. “no, they’re still my favorite,” you replied with a smile on your face. you wrap him up in a hug, leaning your cheek on his warm body. “thank you for thinking of me.” 

“you don’t have to thank me, you know,” dokyeom hummed as he closed his eyes in content. he loves your hugs! his arms wrapped around your waist comfortably. 

“i know, but i want you to know i love you,” you replied, your voice slightly muffled by the material of his sweater. “let’s grab the salt and the sesame seeds so i can cook for you.” 

your boyfriend was the first to pull away, excited. “why didn’t you say so before?” dokyeom pushed the cart over to the spice aisle with a renewed vigor, completely forgetting about the overwhelming selection of tasty treats and snacks he was previously enraptured with. 

you could barely contain your smile. “yah! wait for me!” you giggled, chasing him down. 

by the time you got there, he was grabbing at the brand of sesame seeds you two usually used and was throwing it into the cart. “hurry, y/n. i get to taste your cooking tonight, so we need to get home sooner.” dokyeom told you, feeling giddy. 

“you goofball,” you laughed. “now you wanna hurry up? what happened to your million snacks?” 

he leaned over to you and planted a quick kiss to your lips. “my apologies. i’m just excited.” 

ugh, he always had a way of making your stomach erupt into butterflies -- even now!

even at the checkout line, you could see him bouncing since he was so excited. his card was paying for everything (even the extra cents for some plastic bags) before you could even register the old lady at the checkout telling you the total. 

“what a sweet couple,” she commented with a smile. “enjoy your night, you two.” 

“thank you,” you both chimed back, taking your bags of food. 

as you stepped outside into the chilly weather, dokyeom’s arm brought you closer to him to share his warmth. his lips pressed onto your forehead in an affectionate kiss. “i love you, y/n.” 

“i love you too, kyeom.”
