A real life leviathan

Palaeophis is extinct genus of marine snake that lived during the Eocene epoch and fossils have been found in England, France, Denmark, Morocco and Mali.

The genus varied in size depending on the species with the smallest P.casei measuring 1.3 metres while the largest species, P.colossaeus has an estimated length of 8.1 to 12.3 metres making it one of the largest snakes ever known and a real life sea serpent.

Palaeophis were specialised marine animals though some remains have also been found in estuarine remains suggesting different species occupied different niches. Studies on the vertebrae suggests that these snakes had a faster metabolism and growth rate than modern snakes, indicating that they may have developed endothermy like other marine reptiles like mosasaurs.
