Also kamet hearing someone apologize and for the first time know they actually mean it, they aren't just saying it. It kinda shows the switch for him to go from identifying as a slave to actually valuing himself and being in a place where he can have a relationship with someone else and not having it be about the service he can provide.

something i love about the apology scene in thick as thieves is that even though it's pivotal for both characters and crucial to their future friendship it absolutely does not fix things. it doesn't even establish a baseline of expected future behavior for either character??

"Kamet," said the Attolian in a low voice, "I am sorry. I hope you will forgive me." [...] I opened my mouth and no words came. I didn't know what to say when "sorry" meant something, what to say to an apology that was so obviously sincere.

kamet accepts the apology, and over the next few chapters they become much closer (with less commentary by kamet about the uncomfortable power dynamic between them). but costis doesn't take this for granted--so much so that he expresses surprise after kamet saves him from the well

"What?" I was mystified. "If I wouldn't leave you in a well, why would I abandon you in a ditch?" He looked momentarily as confused as I felt. "I don't know," he admitted. [...] "Actually, I don't know why you didn't leave me in a hole in the ground."

and kamet doesn't rule out that costis might hurt him if they came into conflict again, not even near the very end of the book (when he already told the reader in an earlier passage that losing costis' friendship is a worse outcome than dying):

"Well," I said, realizing that the strange feeling rising in my chest was anger, "you are an idiot." "What?" I didn't back down. He was securely locked in the cell opposite, after all, and I'd already lost his goodwill. I had nothing left to lose. "You knew what I thought of Attolia."

idk what to say about this except that the messiness of this makes it feel so much more real

Rereading the Lord of the Rings series recently, and it's so fascinating to me how much the series is a denial of the typical juvenile power-fantasy that is associated with the fantasy genre.

Like, the power-fantasy is the temptation the Ring uses against people It tempts Boromir with becoming the "one true king" that could save his people with fantastic power. It tempts Sam with being the savior of Middle Earth and turning the ruin that is Mordor into a great garden. It tempts Gandalf and Galadriel with being the messianic figure of legend who brings salvation to Middle Earth and great glory to herself.

The things the Ring tempts people with are becoming the typical protagonists of fantasy stories that we expect to see. and over and over we see that accepting that role, that fantasy of being the benevolent all-powerful hero, is a bad thing. LotR is about how power, even power wielded with benevolent intent, is corrupting.

And its so fascinating how so much of modern fantasy buys into the very fantasy LotR denies. Most modern fantasy is about being that Heroic power-fantasy. About good amassing power to rival evil. But LotR dares not to. It dares to be honest that there is no world where anyone amasses that power and remains good.

I guess that's one of the reasons its so compelling.

Jay absolutely gives Demeter vibes, he seems pretty whole earthy, but so does Cole.

Zane maybe fits hephestus, just because like he could be built by hephestus i guess.

Lloyd as Hades is perfect. Kinda emo, rebels against his dark side (his dad) and his dad is seen as this villain but he's really just a chill dude who loves black and has a helmet.

Maybe Kai and or nya was adopted? Or both? They dont have to be biological siblings. Maybe a centaur adopted them.

So because of my lovely partner here @tricogarfield I kind of got the thought pjo x ninjago (I do this with most fandom) so here’s a few ideas I have idk if I’ll take a deeper dive into it

( this is also more based on pjo and not OoO)

This will mainly be Cole,Jay,Nya,Zane,Lloyd and Kai

( yes I know they have canon elements but I tried to think of a good story too🙏)

Nya and Kai:

So for the siblings my first thought was that Kai should be a child of Hermes or Ares and have the whole Luke arc in a way? But to keep them siblings too but to bring angst I kind of got the idea that have the same mom but differently godly parents.

Look idk how that would fully work out but Nya would be a child of Poseidon mostly because I can see her being a badass woman who starts to argue with the gods

My second thought for her was one of Artemis followers? Mostly because I feel like Kai and her would have gotten into an argument which resulted in a split and each of them going their own ways while Kai gets to deal with Cronos Nya joins Artemis

I don’t know yet so bare with me😞

So for Jay

I know everyone would go for Zeus due to lightning but I kind of can see him more in either Demeter;Apollo or Aphrodite similar to piper? Idk but these were my first thoughts( potentially can also see him as a a child of iris)

I don’t know why these first came into my head but again bare with me it’s only my first thought 😭

As for Cole

Genuinely like the idea of a hephaistos kid because I feel like it would fit however I’m not denying the thought of a Hecate kid as well? Maybe? Idk just thoughts again😖

Lloyd definitely is a Hades kid for me who acts like a Apollo kid. Look I know he’s not dark and gloomy but I feel like it would be so interesting to people if they saw him thought oh yeah Apollo and it’s just a Hades kid 😭

Im kind of stuck on Zane but atm I feel like Demeter or Zeus would fit him? If we’re going by bigger gods but I can also see Hebe maybe?Iris could be interesting too..

Like I said these are just thoughts so I would be very interested if anyone else thought of this

Anyways maybe I’ll talk/think/do more about/for it if people want to?😭maybe designs etc..
