i love you female characters who make selfish choices they know will be bad for everyone. i love you female characters who think they're making the right choice but make things worse. i love you female characters who are making the right choice but noone else understands it.

The fact that resting is usually boring is starting to feel like the bane of my existence

this obviously doesn't apply to every disabled person but one of the things you don't really hear about for being disabled or chronically ill is the boredom. being stuck in bed and like. not having the ability to do anything meaningfully intensive with your hands, not being able to sit up, not having the concentration to read or watch things (from pain or brain fog or something else) and just kinda. lingering around online and hoping for something to happen or someone to talk to even if you have nothing good to say bc nothing has been going on for like the last day, week, month anyway

Shout out to the ten year old who just got diagnosed. Shout out to the housebound fourteen year old. Shout out to the eighteen year old who can’t go to the university they wanted. Shout out to the twenty two year old who can’t get a job. Shout out to the twenty six year old with a caretaker. Shout out to the thirty year old who can’t buy their own house.

Shout out to young disabled people. We exist.

I'm crawling out of the sewer to say it again: don't let anyone stop you from writing what you want to write.

Don't let people saying your writing is too 'self indulgent' stop you.

Don't let people saying your writing is 'not original enough' stop you.

Don't let people saying 'you shouldn't write this' stop you.

Write what compels you.

We all agree, right?

AI to write your novel is wrong

A bargain with a demon to write your novel is okay

ok but legitimately i think the reason why kids aren’t taking internet safety seriously is because the people who are telling us not to put our personal information out seem so out of touch. no one acknowledges the possibility of meeting very real teenaged friends online, they always say that everyone you meet is a 40 year old white man in disguise. because they aren’t acknowledging things we know are true, it becomes a lot easier to dismiss the rest of what they’re saying as well. internet safety lessons absolutely must keep up with the times and acknowledge the internet’s capacity for good if you want kids to take to heart warnings about its capacity for bad.

[Image ID: Twelve-panel pen and ink comic. In the first panel, a hairy dyke sweats and blushes in embarrassment as they lift weights at the gym while bystanders glare at them in disgust. In the second panel, the dyke stands alone wearing a towel, about to enter the bathroom. In the third panel, they raise a razor to their very hairy leg. A speech bubble interrupts them. It reads: "Just what do you think you're doing?" In the forth panel, the dyke gasps and looks over their shoulder in surprise. Their ass is out. In the fifth panel, the dyke exclaims: "Who... who are you?!" to the five saintly apparitions hovering above them, crowned with halos and garbed in masculine styles from various time periods. In the sixth panel, the first apparition speaks: "We are the Butches of Ages Past. We appear to you now in your hour of need." In the seventh panel, the second apparition says: "We saw that you were about to succumb to societal pressure to shave your legs." In the eighth panel, the hairy dyke looks down shamefully at their razor and whines, "People keep staring at me like I'm a walking infection... In the ninth panel all five apparitions shout "DEAL WITH IT!" in unison. In the tenth panel, the third apparition says: "You wear your stigma with pride and don't flinch or look back. That's the way it is done, friend." In the eleventh panel, the first apparition places her hand upon the dyke's shoulder and asks: "If you don't dyke this place up, who will?" The dyke adopts a determined expression and exclaims: "You're right!" In the twelve and final panel, the dyke is back at the gym, lifting a large weight and smirking in smug and wicked pleasure at the alarmed expressions of other patrons. Their legs are still very hairy. Above them a video game-like marker floats in the air and reads: "Mission: DYKE THIS PLACE UP!!!!!"

sometimes instead of a horrid little monk, divine visions of lesbians dance in my head dispensing wisdom

Fandom is so different now and it’s becoming un-fun with how quickly shit moves.

I just want to enjoy things. I don’t want to have to play a game of Artist-Race that seems to be afoot lately.

Ya’ll eat up fandoms, leave artists and writers bone dry and then move on so fucking quickly then fucking wonder where all the Good Fandom Stuff is.

Idk Maybe cherish some things for longer. Reblog stuff. Interact with people. Comment and share.

Fandom is Capitalism now and I’m not being nuanced.

the vast majority of fanworks are bad, and that's fine, actually. they are bad for the same reason that the average number of legs for a human person to have is less than two: statistics. like with all endeavours and especially creative ones, most people who write fanfiction or draw art of their favourite characters are bad at it. if you line up all the crochet projects in the world, most of them will be, well, bad. some are bad because they're the first thing a person ever made, or the second or third or tenth, and this kind of thing takes practice. others are bad because the person who made them is just not very good at it. maybe they just learned how to make granny squares and they're perfectly happy to never expand or improve on that. most people who dance or bake or garden or braid hair are not amazing at it! and you'd never go to your kid's dance recital or eat your friend's homemade carrot cake and expect the same experience as you'd have at a professional ballet performance or award-winning bakery. And that's if we assume there is an objective measure of Good Art, which there isn't! Some art is just "bad" because you don't like it!

I think though that specifically with fanfiction, we sometimes forget that when we read a book or watch a movie, dozens of people have looked at it and given feedback and made changes and done quality control before the final product reaches our shelves or screens, and that's not counting the original writer's learning process and past experience. A published book is not anyone's first crochet project, even if it is their debut novel. But with fanfiction, the barrier to entry is so low (on purpose! this is a good thing!) that we do get to see a lot of wonky granny squares, and on sites like AO3 they're sitting on the same shelf as the hand-made silk lace wedding dress and you can't always tell just by looking at it which is which. The consequence of this is that we encounter fic that we think is unpolished, has bad punctuation, is out of character, and we are tempted to think "well, this is awful! how dare this person put this wonky granny square on the same shelf as the lace wedding dress!" But that's not how fandom is supposed to work! That wonky granny square is somebody who is really excited about this TV show they just watched and they are reaching out into the void to share their excitement with you. To scoff at them for not making a lace wedding dress is really, really rude. Even if they did make a lace wedding dress, maybe it's just really not your style, or you think they should have used a different pattern, and it's still their wedding dress. You don't have to wear the dress and you don't have to read the fic.

We all know that there is some fanfic out there that is incredible. I think it's important to talk about that! But the vast majority of people who post their writing online are just sharing their little hobby projects that they make for fun and I also think it's important to remember that.

Oh look, it seems like there's a Republican-led movement to purge voter rolls in the lead-up to the election! It's almost as if your vote matters and they don't want you to vote! Anyway, I whipped up a quick map (based on this) that shows when the voter registration deadline is in each state. There are a few deadlines coming up in the next week or so.

If you live in a state that regularly purges voter rolls for infrequent voters (the orange ones in the first map), or if you moved recently, it's good to check if you're still registered to vote.

Vote.org makes it super easy to check your registration: https://www.vote.org/am-i-registered-to-vote/

Just put in your address and DOB and they'll tell you whether you're registered. (And they give you a quick link to register online if it turns out that you're not! Only the 9 states in white on my map don't have online registration, and for those they provide instructions on how to do it via mail or in person.)

So yeah, give yourself peace of mind -- do a quick check. :)

But you're already missing out on all the archive-locked fic.

There are currently 13,183,630 works on AO3.

1,277,648 you have to be logged in to see.

That's nearly 10% of the archive!

--

And in my experience, some of the best stuff is locked because it was the hot porn or the controversial and interesting takes that got the author bullied.

Seriously, everyone, do not settle for using AO3 logged out. It locks you out of good features and good works. It also encourages bullies because it makes archive-locking less attractive (so getting bullied into doing so is more of a penalty).

If you're anything more than the most casual of readers, join that queue and get yourself an account!

The worst part about finding love and being surrounded by a ton of people that give a shit, and on top of that have an ongoing fic, is that you can't really give up. Too many ppl would miss u, this person that you've kinda convinced should rely on you for their own betterment is... well, relying on you.

AND ON TOP OF THAT, you really cant leave that fic unfinished. (In the chant of community) 14 chapters and a 3 chapter epilogue!

How it feels to explain writing fanfiction to someone at 3 AM. Like yeah, *technically* I don't have to do this. But like, I *must* do it.

“nobody is making you do this” i am driven by unnatural forces you will never even begin to comprehend

villains are hard to design. making them ugly is dangerous, depending on what traits you choose to frame as monstrous or undesirable, you could very well end up saying something fatphobic, racist, anti-semitic, etc

but if you make a hot villain then people will get thirsty and demand redemptions and refuse to acknowledge their evil actions, no matter how despicable

Since I thought about dealing with it again: not sure who needs to hear this but if you read a really good fic or see a really good idea and it inspires you and you want to try your hand at it or end up with similar lines in your writing to your inspiration - TALK TO THAT AUTHOR.

9 times out of 10, authors are going to be super flattered that they inspired you and will help figure out how to ensure you aren’t encroaching on their work in a way that is plagiarism or even just too close for comfort.

As someone who has been plagiarized and whose partner has also been plagiarized, I can’t detail enough what a blow it is to see and then to have the guilty party get defensive and double down all while claiming they admire you. If you admired that author, you’d respect them, their work, and their feelings.
