In response to Misha’s tweet

First of all, I have two things to say, and if you stop reading immediately after that then I don’t care, but please:

Do not attack Misha, any of the other cast, or the writers.

We don’t (and probably never will) know why Misha posted that video - whether it be ordered by the network or not - but even if you are feeling angry or betrayed, there is no excuse for attacking anyone.

And do not be distracted from the real target!

The network desperately want us to direct all our anger at someone else so that our cause runs out of steam, fails to make any real difference, or can be labelled as ‘crazy fans sending hate mail’.

Okay, now I’m gonna go into a little bit more depth, but they were the most important points to get out of the way.

Before all these shenanigans started, I was writing a paper on queerbaiting and the trope of ‘bury your gays’ using Supernatural as the main example. Then, we got the last three episodes, and I’m pretty sure people are getting sick of me talking about this, but I have been doing my research. I’m just going to go through all the important points of Misha’s video, and deconstruct it a bit.

Okay, first of all, we have the announcement that there ‘never was an alternate ending of 15x18′ but there was a ‘rouge translator’. I know absolutely nothing of how shows are dubbed or translated, but I do think this is one of the funniest things said in a while, because it is either an elaborate cover up OR someone actually did probably sacrifice their job so we could get requited Destiel. Someone buy that translator a drink. Maybe this is true, maybe it isn’t, but I think that people were more suggesting that scenes/lines had been edited out, rather than an entire alternate ending.

Then, Misha says that he is ‘proud’ of Cas’ ending, because it was ‘intentionally inclusive’. Misha absolutely should be proud of Cas’ confession scene, because that is genuinely some of the best acting I have seen in a long time and - as an actor - he really got to prove his skill and ability in arguably one of the most moving scenes in the show. To have Cas come out as queer was amazing, but in my opinion it was not inclusive, because Cas was not included in the ending.

Misha goes on to say that Cas’ confession was ‘done of his own volition with full knowledge of the consequences of his actions’, and this is where I think I start to see the problem. Misha is talking about the scene from the point of view of someone in the Supernatural universe, rather than a scene which has an audience. If no one had been watching that, if it was a real thing that happened, then yes. Castiel’s ‘declaration of love’ was beautiful and he chose self-sacrifice to save his love, and there is nothing ‘insidious’ about it, just a moving and bittersweet end to a phenomenal character. But the problem is that people were watching it. People who loved these characters, people who had been roped in by the possibility of queer representation for years, people who got that representation, only to have it ripped away from them only thirty seconds later.

The definition for the trope ‘bury your gays’ is the ‘presentation of deaths of LGBT characters where these characters are nominally able to be viewed as more expendable than their heterosexual counterparts’. In other words, queer characters are more likely to be killed off, because the writers/ show runners/ network/ audience see them as more expendable. Cas’ death is a prime example of this, and although I know he is mentioned as being out of the Empty in 15x20, he was still more expendable than Dean and Sam, and certainly expendable enough - even though he has been a main character for years - to not appear in the finale at all, other than two very brief mentions of him. Just like Charlie’s death was bury your gays - a lesbian whose death barely served the plot at all, other than to give Dean and Sam some angsty scenes.

Misha ends by saying ‘I wish we could just take a moment to celebrate the good of this show’ and I only have one problem with this. This show (as far as I am aware) has done nothing good. What good has been done has been almost entirely the fans. A prime example of this is The Castiel Project (along with every other fundraiser started after the finale) because the fans have raised over $50,000 dollars for an LGBT charity out of pure spite. Most of hated the finale, and yet we have managed to channel that anger into amazing things.

Let’s do one last amazing thing as a family. Let’s burn the network down.

If anyone ever wants me to write anything for them, please just ask! I love the amazing ideas you all come up with.

5 + 1 ways to inspire creators, keep your fandom alive, and get the content you crave

Not all of us are writers and artists. Not all of us have time and enegry to be creative. Not all of us can contribute to our beloved fandom.

It’s upsetting, but it’s true.

Even when we can contribute, even when we are good, great, talented, even when we do have free time, enegry, self-confidence, sometimes it’s not enough.

Sometimes, if not always, we need the company of other creators. We need others to join us and produce content with our favorite tropes, and our beloved AUs, and with the precise thing in it.

But how to urge your fellow fandom folks to create what you like?

Here are five and one working methods to encourage others to play your beloved tune.

1. Commission the art you want

You say you want frisky art with your OTP wearing cat ears, ballerina tutus, and nothing else, hm? Good news for you, there are a lot of people who are more than happy to draw it for you, for money.

Pros:

You can see the examples of their art, and discuss the result you want to get.

You can commission as make pieces as you want.

You can reblog it, print it, and use it as you agree with an artist.

You support artists

You inspire others both to create and to commission

You promote your thing

Cons:

It can be expensive.

You need to know what you want and explain it to the creator clearly to get it, and it might be hard the first time

Tips:

Commission to less popular artists, support new creators.

Talk, talk, and talk. Express what you want. It can be scary, but the result is worth it.

2. Submit prompts or requests

You don’t have money for commissions? — no problem. A lot of artists and writers accept requests.

Creators who accept requests usually put that in their bio on social media, or in the pinned post.

From time to time both artists and writers ask for prompts. Some are open to filling your prompts all year round while others might do that rarely and only for a short period of time.

Pros:

Free

It’s nice getting prompts — it means people enjoy your style

Cons:

No guarantees that the creator will actually fill it

Tips:

Be polite.

Check what kind of requests they are accepting before asking for anything.

Don’t be very specific. It’s opposite to the commissions. You can’t dictate to them what you want, you can just suggest the idea.

Subscribe to fandom creators on Tumblr, Twitter, and any other social network. This way you won’t miss when the creators accept prompts.

Check general prompts accounts for your ship. Usually, you can leave your prompts there. A lot of great art and fics were inspired by it.

3. Leave comments on existing works

You like A/B/O enemies to lovers with arranged marriages?

You read a fic with it?

You enjoyed it?

Tell the authors that. Leave a big nice comment, a detailed one, where you express your love and gratitude. Do it, even if there are a lot of comments, even if there are no comments, even if the work is old, still do it.

Cons:

No.

Pros:

Gives happiness to creators

Gives confidence boost to creators

Gives the motivation to create more to creators

Tips:

Don’t be afraid — there are no creators who don’t like positive comments.

Do Not, I repeat, do not demand anything. You can politely ask if the author is planning to create more things like it, but be nice.

4. Create rec lists

You like coffee shop AUs, and you read all the fics with coffee shop AUs, and you saw all the art with coffee shop AUs.

Now it’s time to scream to the world about them — create a rec list.

It can be one work. It can be 100.

I usually do something between 7 and 15.

The list should contain the name of the work, link to it, rating, and content warnings. You can tag the creator if you know their account. It’s also good to add the size eg 23K, work status (WIP or not WIP), and a short description. You can write what you like about this work — I usually do it.

Cons:

Takes a lot of time

Hard to find fics if you didn’t bookmark them

Pros:

Sometimes the creators are going to reblog your list, so more people are going to see it.

It’s a really nice feeling to find your work on such a list.

Tips:

Use canva.com or similar apps to create a nice cover for your list

Don’t add any negativity or critic. It’s not a critical post, it’s inspirations for others.

When I rec something with even mildly problematic content I always add a “mind the tags” note.

5. Share your headcanons

Even if you can’t create a full work of any reason what so ever, you can do some quick things.

Just write your hc for your favorite thing here or on Twitter. It can be one sentence — “A really likes pink bathrobe”, or it can be a short story, or anywhere in between.

Cons:

Might not get enough attention if you aren’t yet active in fandom

Pros:

Really easy to do, even if you’ve never created anything in your life.

A good way to see who is also into what you like

Tips:

Tag it with the name of your ship

Don’t forget to add content warnings, and mark it as not safe for work, if it’s something spicy.

Write/draw as many as you like, don’t be afraid to be annoying, people know how to curate their feed

6. Organize a fest

You like soft, fluffy domestic PWP, with a side dish of a detective story with Noir flavor?

Organizing a fest will be the right solution to engage more people in your very specific Noir Smut.

It might sound rare, but there are other people who like that too.

And there are creators who want to challenge themselves.

And there are people who never heard of those types of stories but are willing to try them.

Cons

Takes a lot of time, energy, and organizing skills

Pros

Once you try you will gain valuable experience

Finding more likeminded people

Tips

Don’t hesitate to ask others for help, especially people who expressed interest in similar topics.

It doesn’t have to be a big thing, that you need to announce half a year ahead. I did a tiny game-like fest for Twitter, and my fandom friends and I had a lot of fun with it.

Other options

Obviously, there are more ways.

Create a discord server.

Make a translation.

Do bookbinding.

Create memes, collages, playlist.

Be creative and remember that fandom is our community, and we all are responsible for it.

good morning to everyone making essay length spn finale conspiracy posts compiling sources and putting timelines together trying to track rewrites and cast story changes based on bits and pieces of information, dean’s rumoured “me too” in episode 18 that was covered by crying in post production, misha collins, the video of the full confession scene that lives on jensen’s phone, the takes of jensen yelling cas’s name in anguish that could be heard from streets over that didn’t make it into the final cut of episode 19, the hammer i’m going to knock jared padalecki over the head with, and jensen’s incredibly loud and very sexy silence

When I die, I want my legacy to be something cool, like "rougue translator"
