KAIBA (2008) - created by Masaaki Yuasa
It’s an existential, surrealist and dystopian anime series with the cutest character designs and AMAZING animation lol. I found the whole series on DVD at my local library and I haven’t been the same since akskdkd.
The central concept is about memories. The series takes place in a universe where it is possible to store, export, override, buy/sell people’s memories. But where is the line drawn between our mind, body, and soul when is possible to implant our memories onto other bodies? What are the societal implications of the commercialization and market demand for people’s memories and bodies? These questions and a lot more are what came up for me when I saw this show.

Junji Ito is a Japanese writer, penciller, inker and mangaka, who is best known for his horror manga. Some of his notable works include The Enigma of Amigara Fault, daily line Tomie; which is a series chronicling an immortal girl who drives her stricked admirers to madness, Uzumaki; a three-volume series about a town obsessed with spirals, and Gyo; a two-volume story where fish are controlled by a strain of sentient bacteria called "the death stench". Fishbaiit’s note: (OMFG, I remember that as a kid, I watched and dubbed comic video that was called “The Groaning Drain” and I can’t tell you ENOUGH how much that story gave me nightmares; the voice acting, and the sound effects they added?! I was scared to even shower or go anywhere near the sink. Yet I ended up growing up loving the horror/thriller genre and Junji Ito’s art is just so bizarre and amazing!)

Fun Fact: • Sui Ishida has been my favorite artist. I love how unique the art style is and I would definitely like to have a big poster of any of his works. • My favorite song of Tokyo is Seasons die one after another by Amazarashi, after that I’ve listened to a lot of Amazarashi’s songs.

Nine students gather in their high school at night to bid farewell to a friend. As is customary among many high school students, they perform a sort of ritual for them to remain friends forever, using small paper charms shaped like dolls. However, the students do not realize that these charms are connected to Heavenly Host Academy, an elementary school that was destroyed years ago after a series of gruesome murders took place, a school that rests under the foundation of their very own Kisaragi Academy.
