                     This past week, I had the pleasure of moderating a panel at New Music Seminar entitled “Breakthrough Trends Of The Music Industry”. The panel was comprised of some of the brightest minds in the music business. These folks also know their statistics and where to get it. Some of them were very helpful in my popular argumentthis week about downloading.

The presentation had many amazing facts about where the music business is and where it’s heading. For one, 94% of all new releases sold fewer than 1000 copies (singles or albums). Wikipedia traffic is an accurate predictor of future sales. File trading is on the wane. Meanwhile, sales are up overall and more revenue is coming to artists and labels via SoundExchange every quarter. There’s been a lot of requests for the slides, so here is the deck presented at the panel. What’s your take on these figures?

Moment of Silence,

Toronto Police and emergency personnel are working to determine the cause of the stage collapse that killed one person and injured three at Downsview Park this afternoon, just an hour before gates were scheduled to open for a Radiohead concert.  "The one thing that we're going to be doing is working closely with the Ministry of Labour, trying to determine exactly how that stage came down, and we're urging any witnesses that were in the area to come forward," Const. Tony Vella said at an early evening press conference on the grounds. "It's going to take us a large amount of time to determine exactly what occurred." He urged witnesses to contact Toronto police.

Hip-hop veteran Nas achieves his sixth No. 1 album on the Billboard 200 as Life Is Good bows with 149,000 sold, according to Nielsen SoundScan. That surpasses initial forecasts for the set by industry prognosticators, which had pegged it to begin with around 125,000.
