I’m crying I can’t fucking take these two anymore

this one part from harrow the ninth always made me really upset. so i made a four page comic out of it!

Nona was a child.

Whatever else she was, for a short, wonderful time, she was a child who loved her family, and her friends, and her school

She loved dogs, (especially Noodle) and having her hair plaited, and lying on warm tiles, and hugs, and smiles, and graphic T shirts, and swimming in the sea, and all she wanted

Was a birthday party.

And she was going to invite everyone she loved and some people she didn't even, just because she didn't want to leave them out. She was a child, but she was so clever, and so brave, and she wanted a birthday party when she wasn't even a year old because she knew she didn't have much time left, she knew she was dying and she would have to leave everyone and everything she loved far too soon, and she wasn't even afraid.

She just wanted this last day

To spend time with her family

With her friends

For the last time

And she

Didn’t

Get it.

Harrow the Ninth spoilers below

Harrow watching "The Sleeper" fight Nonius and saying how Gideon would have loved to see this, how it's an incredible fight, how this woman must have been treasured as a champion of her people... and not knowing HOW desperately Gideon woukd have wanted to see this fight. HOW vastly important this fight with this woman is.

Harrow not knowing this is Gideon's mother. Harrow not knowing this amazing fighter of a woman was the highly respected leader of Blood of Eden. Harrow not knowing this woman attempted to doom her House and her Lord by making Gideon, intending to use Gideon, Harrow not knowing this woman called Gideon "bomb."

It's amazing the things the characters in this book witness or experience and don't even know how intensely it would affect another character they know.

If Gideon had been there, Gideon would've been moved to tears. She would have felt Too Many Things and possibly broken down, especially if she had been there after hearing the conversation in John's room with Wake and then Mercy and Augustine. Gideon was there for thay conversation, the arguably mote important thing for her to hear and know, but imagine if Gideon had also seen Wake fight like this. If she could have that full scope of who ehr mother truly was, and how similar they were.

It's funny how much of Gideon we can see in Wake and John, and therefore how much if them she reflects without ever having met either of them until after she was dead. Truly how much of Gideon is nature and not nurture, or that how much of her nature was exacerbated by her nurture (or lack thereof).

Funny to me how Harrow and Gideon keep learning things about each other without realizing it or without spending time together because they've been separated again. Funny to me how much of their experiences apart only increase their fondness and pining and understanding for each other.

And now I gotta go lie down, thinking about Gideon and her origins and Harrow knowing things Gideon can't and vice versa and Gideon and Harrow in general
