Resources For Writing Nonbinary and Genderfluid Characters

“How do I portray the nonbinary experience?”  This, in various combinations, is one of the most frequent asks I receive from readers.  And, I can say as an enby person, there is no concrete answer, because there is no single way to be nonbinary.  

Thus, I have compiled a long-overdue selection of resources for your convenience, with more to come!  Nonbinary, genderfluid, gender noncomforming, or questioning followers are also welcome to submit their own experiences for inclusion.

An Unkindness of Ghosts, by Rivers Solomon (a sci-fi endeavor that derives clear inspiration from Octavia Butler’s legacy of Afrofuterism, wherein the White upper class becomes more harshly binary, and the “inferior” people of color are more fluid with their identities.)

Symptoms of Being Human, by Jeff Gavin (a young, genderfluid teen secretly blogs about their inner life, and must confront the danger of being outed.)

Lizard Radio, by Pat Schmatz (a nonbinary protagonist grapples with a rigidly binary society, and the prospect that she may have descended from lizard people.  Hashtag queer culture.)

The Unintentional Time Traveler, by Everett Maroon (a time-traveler who swaps genders along with time periods, and must come to terms with which are right for them – and whether both is an option.)  

Orlando, by Virginia Woolf (a groundbreaking depiction of gender-fluidity and same-gender love.  The titular Orlando uses the singular “they” at one point, and gets a happy ending.  Far ahead of its time.)

Non-Fiction Literature:

Nonbinary:  Memoirs of Gender and Identity (thirty authors discuss how they’ve navigated – or broken away from – the gender binary.)
