Ribbon eels are born biologically male, like whiptail lizards, they are born from a one gendered dominated population. Ribbon eels are usually a colorful mix of black, blue and yellow.

Ribbon eels can change from male to female when its time to lay eggs, their pattern changing from blue, black and yellow to completely yellow.
