Thinking about how Nicklaus met his match in Jay in a way. Just for a second, of course, but he was likely startled by her a bit, even if he didn't show it. He was used to dealing with people who were desperate, naive, or at a very low point in their lives. He took advantage of their weaknesses. He appeared to Gillion at the beginning, when he really didn't know much about humans or deals or such. He appeared to Chip when he had made multiple promises, all of them seeming impossible. He tried to do the same for Jay, when one friend was missing and another had given up. But I don't think he counted on just how mistrusting this woman was. She grew up around soldiers, people who knew how to manipulate and force their way. She had heard so much about him, unlike the others. She is stubborn and calculating and caring.

He still won, but it wasn't on his terms. It was her redefining them, looking him in the eye and refusing to listen to him, because she already knew exactly what she wanted and she didn't just blindly do what he requested out of his end. She was confident and prepared, and Niklaus hadn't faced that before, though he did manage to do it with grace.

the magical misfits could have EASILY gotten through fh freshman year NOT because they would have been able to easily defeat Kalvaxus but because they would have bullied Penelope into the GROUND before she could ever have been crowned prom queen

jay fucking ferin guys:

jay grew up in the prestigious ferin family, grew up with a purpose, a future planned out for her and a family where love was given.

then, her sister died. her family shattered, her future suddenly pushed in a completely different direction. love was no longer given but earnt, swords replaced hugs and the only way to even summon her fathers attention.

jay had grown up in the prestigious ferin family until the glue that held them together had been riddled with bullets. jay hid away from her bows and arrows, staying safe amongst the birds and patrons of her mothers tavern.

then a boy stumbled in, dressed in tattered clothes and a small layer of sea salt. he was the answer her father had been begging for and finally she could be part of the prestigious ferin family. she snuck away with him into the light, the ghost of her sister following close behind.

on the open seas, she was no longer part of the prestigious ferin family. she was simply jay, the best shot and a co captain of the riptide pirates. this was not the purpose she was given, these were not the evil she had been trained to kill.

who was she outside of the ferin family, she had a purpose without her fathers permission and even the ghost of her sister seemed at peace
