How arcane handles adoption is something that I have been looking for in movies and media for years.

With obvious few exceptions to this, It’s common in media to see family portrayed like “relation by blood is stronger than anything.” Because a character isn’t blood-related, their meaning or voice in the story will be downplayed or seen as disposable.

A lot of the time people say “adopted” child, Like the adopted part matters. I know a few adopted people in real life that aren’t bothered by it, and for many others, I have found it does. For me, It often seems weird when people feel the need to point out that the person or character isn’t related to them by blood before they acknowledge them as a family member. Adoption isn't a constant state of being—it's a past event.

Silco never says this is my ‘adopted’ daughter. He calls jinx his daughter and says it with meaning and pride every time. There is absolutely no hesitation when claiming her as his own. There is no separation because he took her in and made her his family, and As an adoptee, I think that means a lot.

I hope that people who write about Silco or Jinx be open-minded and take what I have said into consideration. I love it when writers are mindful of the way adoption is addressed. Thank you for coming to my Ted Talk.
