Right now, there is a wave of book banning across the United States. The banning of Maus in a Tennessee school district is not the first, nor will it be the last. It is emblematic of the heinousness of the conservative movement that is leaning more and more into fascism.

They will dress it up in any guise they can. The fact that they packaged this one as "its about the nudity and curse words" is transparent, but other places have been outright open, seeking to ban teaching of the Holocaust outright. They will ban discussion of racism (as the new governor of Virginia rode to an election victory promising), they will ban discussion of LGBTQ+ (as Florida now seeks to do), they will ban discussion of the Holocaust, of sexism, of unions, of anything that would lead people to question the status quo.

What happens when the next generation no longer even has the language to discuss these topics? Who will they turn to? Where will they get their information? Will they even look? Will they even care as the history of the last hundred years is swept away under the tide of American exceptionalism and reactionary oppression?

As this all is eroded, know that it is paving the way for authoritarianism to take over. We MUST teach these topics. We MUST teach the violence of our history. We MUST teach that the cruelties, the hatreds, the anger, and the terrible great silence has been a part of our world, and that it still clings on today. If we do not, we will see it repeated.

And the horrifying part is, that's exactly what they want.

Today is International Holocaust Rememberance Day. Please, if you can, take the time to sit with that memory. Take the time to sit with that pain, to remember one of the darkest and most brutal moments in world history. And if you can, please donate to the US Holocaust Memorial Museum or a similar organization.
