"Husband" "Wife" Vs. "Partners"
"Husband" "Wife" vs. "Partners"
In response to the AP's wanting to use "partner" instead of "husband" or "wife" I suggest we choose another option. As a gay male I'm not thrilled with the prospect of being referred to as "wife" and the idea of two "husbands" or two "wives" in a marriage just doesn't jive with me, either. In my novels—and eventually in real life—I use the term eş (Turkish, pronounced esh, as in fresh) which can mean both 'husband' and 'wife' or can be translated 'one of a pair'. Let the AP follow their own policy of right-wing bigotry. Let's start our own marriage traditions and terminology—as long as we have the same rights and benefits of husbands and wives. Let's carry the new traditions one step further and replace "marriage" with the Hungarian word for marriage, esküvő (pronounced esh-kü-vő, the ü like German ü or French y; the ő similar to German ö or French oe) which, interestingly, echoes the Turkish eş.
