prologue

meet the members of sigma kappa zeta

as a freshman you quickly learn what groups on campus have a sort of reputation, whether good or bad. alpha gam's, for example, were known as the "bitchy sorority", quoted from your freshman year roommate, and you agreed after attending a few rush events your first year. anime club was full of weirdos, aka a bunch of white men fetishizing asian women. the dance team was actually pretty nice, remembering your name and being excited to see you at their performances.

the fraternities on campus probably had the most noticeable reputations by the way you knew what frat houses to avoid every friday and saturday night. betas are the stereotypical frat, trashing their own house and being pretty sleazy with the alcohol served at their "events". omegas technically weren't even a frat, just a bunch of gross guys living under one roof who took advantage of housing policy to host massively disruptive parties in the middle of the week. luckily your freshman dorm wasn't anywhere near their house but several friends had to deal with the consequences of your neighbors throwing the loudest party known to man on a tuesday night.

one house you knew was approachable on your first weekend on campus was the sigma kappa zeta house, with an alcohol monitor and music levels that wouldn't kill your hearing before the end of the night. sigma kappa were known as the nice frat on campus, although with the reputation of the other frats it seems like an easy title to gain. at the activities fair your first year you found out about their buddy system program that allows for you to call them, any time of day or night, to get an escort home, no questions asked. never did you think you would use the program until you were at the library a little later than planned one night and the walk back to your dorm seemed a little more intimidating in the dead of night. that ended up being the same night you met the current president of sigma kappa, bang chan, a very sweet and very handsome music composition and performance double major. you had felt the need to apologize for the wake up call when he showed up, immediately noticing his tousled bed head and the tossed on inside out t-shirt, but he only chuckled and told you to stop, saying he fell asleep working on a song at his desk anyway.

although only a junior at the time you could feel his passion for everything he was involved in as you talked on your walk to your dorm, finding out about his success on the swim team and his volunteer work teaching music to children at an afterschool program in town. most impressive was probably his dedication to the campus radio station, which he was already music director for and had a show of his own sunday mornings.

"it's called chan's room and i kind of just play whatever i'm feeling like and talk to whoever may be listening in. some people have told me it helps them study but i don't know," he told you, timidly rubbing the back of his neck. "if you ever have any song suggestions feel free to let me know, i like including what people want to listen to." 

you didn't use the buddy system program the rest of the year but you definitely tuned in to chan's room when you could wake up in time on sundays. you have to admit that he really sold it short, always enjoying his song picks and admiring the songs he made that he would sometimes preview for listeners.

throughout your first year you got to know more of the sigma kappa zeta members, mostly those that lived in the house and seemed to be involved in absolutely everything on campus. like han jisung, a triple major in music composition, music performance, and dance performance who was also a part of an actually funny improv comedy club on campus, a member of the dance team, and somehow also a soundcloud rapper who was actually good. your first year he was in your introductory courses for the dance program along with his so-called twin, lee felix. you had actually known felix from moving in as he had not only moved into the dorm hall next door but he helped you carry up your minifridge. you found out he was a dance performance major looking at becoming a music performance minor or possibly even double majoring. of course neither of them were sigma kappa members when you first met but the fact that they became members after really solidified your idea of sigma kappa zeta as the "nice" frat.

as a dance performance major yourself, you became involved in the dance team on campus as well as the college's dance company where you met lee know and hwang hyunjin, both choreography and dance performance double majors who seemed to end up running the entire student side of the dance program your sophmore year. lee know seemed to be a very serious person at first, being very focused in all practices, but once your rehearsals were finished for the hour he immediately joked with everyone, relentlessly teasing hyunjin who always still seemed a bit scared of his senior.

hyunjin was extremely sweet, always helping you with movements and offering constructive critiques you could actually apply. along with his talent in dance he was also an insanely talented studio artist as proved by his membership in both the photography and painting and drawing clubs. he had admitted to you over a quick lunch before practice that he was a studio art minor simply because he had already taken most of the required courses for fun.

overall, your first semester you met over half of the members of sigma kappa that would live in the frat house your sophmore year, meeting another two your second semester. seo changbin you got to meet through han, finding out about the music composition major that featured han on half of his soundcloud songs. similar to han, he was actually pretty good at rapping and you got to find out about his campus popularity when you told your roommate who you had gotten lunch with earlier that day.

seungmin was the last you met in your first year, finding out about the service dog training program that held puppy mondays in the residential quad to help students de-stress and just knowing you needed it during midterms. seungmin was extremely nice, as you had expected upon hearing he was a sigma kappa member, telling you all about the puppy he was training, a little golden retriever named daengmo who was still learning the difference between work and play time.

"yeah, i'm the treasurer-elect for sigma kappa and changbin is supposed to start training me to be the housing co-coordinator but from the fact he always forgets he's the housing coordinator it seems like no one really trained him," seungmin complains and you laugh in response. after you had told him about all the other sigma kappas you'd been lucky enough to meet in your first year he opened up to you even more, telling you about his music performance major and communications studies minor. "oh, i'm in charge of the sigma kappa instagram too. you should totally follow us, definitely not because we need followers or anything." you immediately followed them.

for the rest of the semester you tried to keep up with whatever sigma kappa was doing, attending almost every party and enjoying them all. by the end of your first year you knew all the members that would live in the sigma kappa zeta house your second year, well all except one. last minute, changkyun, the president of sigma kappa your freshman year and a member planning to stay for a fifth year to finish out his last minute double major dropped out of living in the sigma kappa house, leaving a space to be filled by a possible incoming freshman if they could snatch it before any of the upperclassmen members swooped in to take it.
