Some late night Kate (and Eva) thoughts that may or may not make you sad.

Eva being the first person to make Kate smile for months after Chess dies. Before, Chess was the only one Kate would smile at, sure she would smile when she made fun of Riley, but it was always a sarcastic smirk, never a genuine smile.

The team is taking a water break during outdoor practice, Kate and Eva sitting a small distance away from everyone else. The other girls are talking when suddenly they hear this really soft giggle. They’re all confused because none of them laughed, and they turn around and see Kate just laughing, and Eva’s smiling and all proud of herself for it and the rest of the team is just shocked.

Eva’s very affectionate with people she’s close to. She never really touches Cairo, Annleigh, and Reese, sometimes she’ll fist bump Mattie or ruffle her hair (they have big sister little sister vibes) but she’s always finding ways to have physical contact with Kate. Holding her hand, touching her shoulder, wrapping an arm around her, hugging her, and Kate loves it. She goes from surly and mean to bubbly and sweet in an instant the moment Eva enters the room.

Cairo and Annleigh take it particularly hard. While Mattie and Reese are just happy to see Kate happy, Cairo and Annleigh are used to only seeing Kate act that way around Chess. Whenever they hear her using that gentler tone of voice, when her smile goes from sharp to soft, they expect to see her looking at Chess. But it’s not Chess, it’s Eva, and that’s weird.

Kate’s relationship with Eva is similar to her relationship with Chess, but it’s also different. With Chess, there was always that sense of being just out of reach, she knew she didn’t have a chance, so she just tried to be as much of a friend as she could. With Eva, she has a shot and so she can be giggly and happy around her and be affectionate and even a little flirty, because she knows her feelings might be returned.

Sometimes, they do things that Kate and Chess used to do. Movie nights and cuddling, rides home from school, a kiss dropped on the top of Kate’s head while studying, giving Kate notes for a class she missed because of a panic attack.

And Kate starts to lean into the familiarity of it. Sure, a part of her aches and thinks about Chess, but the larger part of her leaps with excitement, recognizing the little moments as things that once brought her joy, and diving back into the comfort of that feeling while also enjoying the newness of it. Because it’s not the same, not entirely.

Kate and Eva watch different movies, it’s a different bed that they’re cuddling in, it’s a different car and different music. Eva smooths her hand over Kate’s hair when she kisses her head, tucks a few strands behind her ear. Eva’s handwriting is different, and her note taking style is too. It’s the same but different, and Kate loves it.

Chess watches and follows Kate around as a spirit, and she cries the first time Eva makes Kate smile, the first time she laughs, and watches as Kate starts to return to her old self, a better version of her old self, a little worse for wear, but happier too. She’s so happy, and Chess couldn’t be prouder.

Chess, Farrah, and Clark sit in on the Tigers first practice after Mattie comes back. Kate is talking to Reese when Eva comes up and hugs her from behind. Kate stops mid sentence to smile as Eva kisses her cheek, and she giggles a little when she feel a little tickle against her side. Farrah gapes as the rest of the team looks on like this is normal, as if Kate wasn’t always the one to never crack a smile at anything before.

Anyway I’m just really soft for Kate and I love her a lot. She deserves happiness, they all do, and my brain is just in overdrive right now.
