A book I must read

DEAR GOD Paul has aged like fine wine. Really. Richard, my other bias has been cute all along but MY GOD Paul just keeps getting cuter. (Dont even get me started about Schneider and thay gray on his beard)

A few days ago I saw a few videos on Tiktok like "which kind of light are you" with aesthetically pleasing pics to choose. And this inspired me to make a new series of pics on this topic with Rammstein, here they are ✨

Till as northern lights

Northern lights is colourful but cold, and Till has a bright deep personality, but he is somehow "cold" and reticent

Paul as sunlight

Paul is joyful and very positive person who makes everyone laugh and always smiles himself. Just like the sun warms people and makes them smile

Flake as moonlight

The moon does not have its own light, it reflects sunlight only, but it doesn't make it less beautiful. And as moon, Flake is always in the background, but still gorgeous

Oliver as starlight

The stars are small, something they don't attract our attention, and we only realize how dark the night is when they're not there. And so is Oliver's role - for some people it seems as not that significant, but without him the melody will be poor and pale

Richard as lightning

Lightning is bright and powerful, but dangerous at the same time. And I see it's as a reflection of his bright, strong and rebellious soul

Schneider as street light

Street light shows us the way in the dark and drums show the "way" for the melody

If you ask my opinion this is pretty much what all the fandom thinks.

If any of them disappeared from Rammstein

Some months ago I read the book “If cats disappeared from the world” by Kawamura Genki. The premise of the book is simple: the protagonist is going to die, but is granted one more day of life if he sacrifices one thing. So, for example, to live one more day he sacrifices movies: the day after the world lives without knowing what movies are, and everything works completely fine. The point is that you can’t miss what you’ve never experienced, everything is unnecessary in the face of death and we should never take anything for granted. I reflected and cried a lot; I love the book and it is one of my favorites.

When I first wrote this draft it was after I reblogged a post about the importance of Paul and Flake in the definition of what Rammstein is, and while I absolutely do agree with the post, in the tags I said “The point is that each member of this band is fundamental. Take away any of the six and equation simply doesn’t work. That’s magic and quite frankly that’s destiny.”

Is it really? Is it real that if you take any of the six away Rammstein simply doesn’t work? We all know how Rammstein themselves keep fighting to keep the lineup as it is: the six men marriage, the democracy, even therapy - 30 years together, always the same six members all along, even in the face of the worst crisis they always managed to stay together. All six of them, no one is ever left behind. So, they already answer the question with a loud and final “No.” But what if - just what if - even of them disappears from Rammstein?

Obvious disclaimer: the following is 100% my opinion. I admit I’m not the perfect Rammstein connoisseur so I’m sure there will be mistakes here, you’re absolutely free to correct me or/and add your knowledge. 

1 - If Till disappears from Rammstein

Can you imagine our beloved band without him in the front? Without his words, his voice, his stage presence - HIM?

The curse of the singer is that, for almost any band, they become the face of said band. They are the words and the voice, other than the face in mere terms of physical aspect, what is the most recognizable feature of the music a band publishes. To say that for Till is an understatement, with his charismatic stage persona, a soul divided between shadow and light, his debatable yet loved lyrics, his readiness to challenge any boundary for his twisted idea of art. Till IS Rammstein. His is the pen that wrote all the lyrics we sing by heart; his is the only voice that could ever compliment Rammstein’s music as it does; his passion, theatrics, moves and crazy shenanigans on stage are what makes a Rammstein show what it is - the fire is just an element to entertain. Imagine Rammstein with any other lyrics, any other voice, any other person up front: it would not be Rammstein. Simple as that.

2 - If Richard disappears from Rammstein 

I’m sure we came very close to that happening, right Mutter era? Yet already then the band was ready to sacrifice itself rather than doing what any other band would have done relatively easy: replacing a member. 

Imagining Rammstein without Richard is strange. Next to Till, he’s the other member whose image is quite tied to the band. His rockstar persona - a diva, always smoking a cigarette, very careful about his appearance - is undeniably part of Rammstein’s lore and even a non-fan would immediately recognize him as “that” Rammstein guitarist. Musically speaking, a cynical musician would say that Richard would be quite easy to replace: a guitarist with a simple, yet straightforward and direct playing style would be easy to replace, right? Yes, sure - but would he put the same heart Richard does? To me, Richard is the one that made the most self-bettering journey in the band: firstly by addressing his difficult childhood and teenage years and then learning to be understanding of his band members. A song without Richard’s solos wouldn’t be the same, any show without him spinning in his long coat wouldn’t be a Rammstein show.

3 - If Paul disappears from Rammstein

Let me light up the mood while keeping the matters serious: Rammstein without Paul is like saying a carbonara without eggs would taste the same. All of Italy would be after your ass and you would be also unmistakably and totally wrong.

Let’s state the obvious: without Paul there wouldn’t even be Rammstein. And yes we can also debate all day and all night about his difficult personality, especially at the beginning days of the band, but that to me has always gave the impression of someone who knows what he wants and how he wants it, while clearly overlooking how to achieve it. Paul is a man of opinions, and unfortunately for him, very similar to Richard in this aspect. And yet, Paul is also the kind, funny man, whose smile lights up a room and our collective hearts; he’s always there for us fans for a word or a photo and a funny remark. And even if he too isn’t that virtuoso, his rhythm guitar is what carries a song through, complementing the other instruments or Richard’s solos in an effective manner. So, if we established that without Paul there wouldn’t be Rammstein, consequently nothing will work without him. 

4 - If Oliver disappeared from Rammstein

Probably the general consensus would be that without the bassist any band will work, and particularly with the fact that Olli tends to be quite overlooked many would say the same about or beloved bassist.

The thing that many fail to recognize is that without bass a song will inevitably fall flat. A bass is there for a reason, to underline the riffs and give them more depth. A good bassline can touch a soul and change it forever, believe me. Many overlook Olli because he’s a very reserved, private person, yet happy to meet fans as per this wonderful post. What I gather though from many years of worshipping bands is that generally a member who is shyer/quieter/calmer is fundamental in the equation of the band. Usually such a member is the one who can calm down arguments or be the decisive one when making an important decision, and I think this applies to Olli too. Anyway, whether he isn’t so outgoing as other members, that shouldn’t matter: he is a part of the band as the other five. And as the other five he has a right to choose in the democracy for anything that Rammstein does, so his presence is equally important as the other five. As I’m working on a post on Rammstein basslines, I’m not going into detail of Oliver’s craftsmanship as a bassist, but I strongly believe for all the reasons I stated now that he can’t be replaced in any way. 

5 - If Flake disappeared from Rammstein

Just imagine any Rammstein song without his keyboards. Spieluhr without the music box sound. Du Hast without that driving keyboard riff. Mann Gegen Mann without that solo. Impossible, right?

As for Paul, Rammstein wouldn’t exist without Flake as he too is a key member of the band. Many would argue that Flake is treated badly by the other members - and while that could be considered true giving what poor Flake has been through in 30 years, the point is that this slander is actually putting him in a spotlight. He isn’t the usual definition of an attractive man, his strange remarks can and probably do drive away from him many, and yet by “making fun of him” (think about all the unfortunate roles Flake has been given in music videos or in lives) he is given a much needed spotlight that he also seems to enjoy. Without Flake, there wouldn’t be a member to put in such a position and many “stables” of the band won’t even exist. Musically speaking Flake is what gives Rammstein that special touch that makes Rammstein’s music what it is: that’s why I started this post by listing some of my favorite songs because of their keyboards. Rammstein without Flake would just be any other band. 

6 - If Schneider disappeared from Rammstein

It’s not easy for me to be objective about this, the sole thought of not having Schneider in Rammstein hurts a lot to be honest. I will try my best.

As I said in this post, musically speaking Schneider is perfect in Rammstein because he’s not only the driving force behind the songs and the lives, but his drumming style complements the songs without stealing too much attention. I see him as a sort of mum of the band. I still have in my eyes the image of him crying at that concert (I can’t remember which) when he probably thought that he was going to lose everything he was seeing - playing live, the fans, his friends and band mates. I know he’s a very emotional man, but seeing him like that broke my heart honestly. He cares. He always did. I can’t imagine any other drummer beside him in the band. Simple as that. 

I can’t believe there’s people who think that Rammstein will work without any of the six members. Given everything I just wrote, I strongly believe nothing will work without any of them in the equation. And I said in the beginning, Rammstein themselves are and were the strongest advocates to keep the band as the six of them - Till, Richard, Paul, Oliver, Flake and Schneider ONLY- since the early days. A few examples:

This could be the earliest mention from a member of their intention of never changing the lineup: Viva Jam 1997 interview, where Richard says: “For me there is only this constellation in Rammstein, I think it would be the end of Rammstein if one of us left the band, so the most important thing for me is that we stick together.”

Videos and songs talking about their relationship: Haisfisch is the most obvious example (Sechs Herzen die brennen), but the video for Ohne Dich also has this implication. In the video, Till falls and his badly injured. They know that reaching the summit would be dangerous for all of them, because Till can’t climb properly and is basically a dead weight to carry. BUT GUESS WHAT: they fucking do. They reach the summit. ALL OF THEM. Carrying Till who is basically dying and the end he fucking does. BUT THEY REACH THE SUMMIT WITHOUT LEAVING HIM BEHIND. Is there anything else to be said? OR in the Adieu video THEY ALL DIE, no-one is left alive;

Richard wrote a fucking love song to Rammstein and no I will never not shut up about it;

THE HUG IN MUNICH AT THE HEIGHT OF THE ALLEGATIONS.

There’s more I can't think about at the moment but my point is: RAMMSTEIN IS A PACKAGE DEAL. They come in six members and you can’t just throw away any of them at pure pleasure.Take it or leave it. And honestly, the difficulties they overcame, how fucking close they’ve become during the years but especially during the 2023 tour... I don’t know what else to say. They did and are doing anything to go on together. And when they decide to call it quits, no one will bring on the Rammstein name. Rammstein dies with the six of them. And that’s beautiful.
