Apalache Shooting: What We Know (From a Georgian) as of 09/05/24

All information is from validated news sources, and are the primary pieces of vital information to understand what happened. I am a Georgia student myself, a senior in a high school very close to Apalachee. This is very important to me, and deserves all of the attention it can get before the media inevitably shoves it away.

A 14-year-old student, Colt Gray, brought an assault rifle gifted to him by his father, Colin Gray, to Apalachee High School in Winder, Georgia on 09/04/2024 and opened fire at approx. 10:30 am.

The timeline of events has not yet been released; however, it has been said by students that Gray left class and came back with a gun with approximately a 40-minute interval, and that he was 'always skipping class' and 'very quiet.' Not very much information has been publicly released about Gray from verified news sources.

The school had received an anonymous call informing them that Apalache would be shot and would be the first of five schools to have a shooting, which is being investigated; there is currently no proof that Gray had accomplices. The anonymous caller's identity is still unknown.

Gray was investigated by the FBI over a year ago when he was 13 for anonymous tips of school shooting threats on an online gaming site that were traced back to him, but was not charged due to insufficient evidence.

Gray shot and killed two students and two teachers — Coach Richard Aspinwall, Miss Christina Irimie, Mason Schermerhorn (14), and Christian Angulo (14) — and wounded nine more, who are mercifully in "stable condition" as of Sept. 5, and whose identities have not yet been revealed to the public through news sources.

The original reports listed 30 injured; only 9 of those were gunshot wounds, most of the others being severe panic attacks that required hospitalization.

Gray surrendered to the school resource officer immediately, being one of the first school shooters to survive in American history. He is being held in a juvenile detention center, but will be tried as an adult; his bond hearing is tomorrow (09/06/24) at 8:30 am EST at the Barrow County Courthouse. He is being currently charged with four counts of felony murder.

The motive of the shooting has not yet been released.

His father, Colin Gray, was arrested today (09/05/24), and is being charged with four counts of involuntary manslaughter, two counts of second-degree murder, and eight counts of cruelty to children. 

There have been unconfirmed threats sent to other schools in the area spanning across greater Atlanta near Winder, but they are being investigated, and security measures are being put into place to ensure safety. (Allegedly.)

A student at Meadowcreek High School was arrested earlier this evening (09/05/24) for making false threats to the school and other surrounding schools, including a photo of an assault rifle that was circulated on Snapchat and Instagram; the student will be charged with criminal law as well as severe student discipline.

This is the worst school shooting in Georgia history.

This is the 45th school shooting this year in America.

Just wanted to share how close I live to the recent school shooting that happened. It’s literally too close to home. I saw cops speeding by me on the way there as I was going to work. Surreal. My niece, who is 12, lives a few counties over and they didn’t even discuss it at her school evidently. She didn’t know it happened. Let’s talk to young ones about this. They need to know right from wrong and what to do in these situations. Let’s have conversations and let’s change policies. Of course you can still get an AR-15, but you can also carry a firearm without a concealed carry permit in GA. Other stupid gun laws in GA are the state does not have universal background checks for gun purchases, safe storage laws or a red-flag law. These are things we can easily change and should change. This is not a political statement. These are life saving changes. Yeah, we should also have easier accessibility to mental health care and we should have more safety measures put into place. Let’s do it all people.
