Making tea comes with a certain odd awareness of my heartbeat resonating in my stomach. I recently bought a teakettle with a turquoise Indian pattern that looks alternately like paper lanterns and the heads of park rangers, and the fuse of the water roiling nearly puts me to sleep. There's a storm in that vessel. When I bob the tea bag, it's green contents swelling and diffusing into the too-warm liquid, my hand is drawn to my stomach as if the rhythmic pulses of blood moving are a pregnancy, the same way one's mouth subconsciously opens when one's fingers near the surface of the eyes. I wonder if that's a defense mechanism--the throat ready to shriek at a gouging, or something like that. Who knows.
