I mean. Technically Sukuna’s fingers ARE organic?

Nanami: I only give Itadori organic snacks.

Gojo: That’s cool. I saw Yuji eat a Cursed Object the other day.

If you can manage to do it with the story, try to have groups of enemies with varied skillsets that can synergize with each other. Combat can definitely feel very samey from time to time as a GM, so having enemies that do different things can make it less monotonous. Other ways of breaking up the pacing that you might try out are environmental hazards or side goals.

Unfortunately, sometimes these things just don’t work with the story. In those cases, you can try having the enemies do something other than mindlessly attacking. For instance, they could attempt to disarm players, run to sound an alarm, or even just grapple them. Basically, so long as you’re doing something than having a large number of enemies who do the exact same attack once a round, there will be a bit more of an engaging feeling to combat.

So. I’m after some advice that I’ve never really seen given before. How do I run combat more effectively? I can run a game as a whole just fine, and I tend to run more roleplay focused games anyway. But then when I do run combat, it often feels sluggish and mediocre, like it’s slowing down the pace of the game as a whole. What makes it more fun? Or does GMing combat fundamentally feel a bit less exciting than playing in it?

It Is, In Fact, Strength, And Heres A Screenshot Of The PHB To Prove It.

It is, in fact, Strength, and here’s a screenshot of the PHB to prove it.

Do thrown weapons use strength or dexterity when they lack the finesse property?

My guess is strength, because weapons without finesse also use strength.

This post is absolutely excellent. But that isn’t the highest movement speed achievable in D&D, it’s just the highest walking speed. There’s a spell called Wind Walk that gives you a 300 foot flying speed, which can make you the fastest thing possible in the game. Some of the movement speed increases listed above only apply to walking speeds, so I’ve made my own edited version of the table that only lists increases to movement speed:

This Post Is Absolutely Excellent. But That Isnt The Highest Movement Speed Achievable In D&D, Its Just

That’s 7200 feet per round, which is 1316.736 km/hr or 818.18 miles/hr. The speeds that were getting listed earlier? They’re about 3/4 the speed you can go with this. It would be a much bigger difference, but boots of speed were one of the unfortunate losses to switching off of a walking speed. It’s just so wonderful how fucking FAST you can go in D&D.

Found out today that a level 18 tabaxi monk, under the effects of a haste spell, wearing boots of speed, and using feline agility, and then using both action and haste action to dash, combined with step of the wind bonus action dash, can technically move 1920 feet per round. That’s 218 miles per hour. I’m getting nauseous just thinking about it.

Also, most American states are huge, so someone just saying that they’re from America would be equivalent to someone just saying they’re from Europe.

meeting a new group of people

me: hi! so where are you guys from :D

normal people: I am from Russia/Brazil/Italy/Australia/etc :)

Americans, assuming studying the specific geography of their country was ever relevant to me: Oh I was born in iower but went to school in Oregano (My parents come from East Carolina though):~)

Ten years ago today, a young man stood in his bedroom. It just so happens that today, the 13th of April 2019, is this young man’s birthday. Though it was twenty-three years ago that he was given life, it was only ten years ago that he was given a name.

This young man’s name is John Egbert.

You could give anyone wielding a reach weapon an Attack of Opportunity whenever someone moves 5 feet closer to them from within their reach? It would serve to help replicate getting to hit them earlier without just giving a feat ability to everyone. Polearm Master gives an effect on the edge of your reach, not within your reach, so it’s still technically an upgrade. In fact, it specifically means that taking Polearm Master would make you better at fighting opponents who also have reach, because you’re the better polearm user.

Historically, weapons with reach were very powerful because they could kill the opponent before they got close enough to hit you with their sword. In D&D, you usually don’t get a kill in a single turn and even if you do, you can probably achieve the same thing with a greatsword.

If you want to, you can try the following rule: If you hit a creature using a reach weapon, the target has to make a Con save (DC 8 + proficiency + strength mod). On a failed save, the creature can’t move closer to you during its next turn. It can still move away from you.

The best part to me is that it’s specifically in the heart of Death Valley. Because it implies that Death picked the location entirely for the pun, which is very character accurate. Fun fact, this is also why Death City is surrounded by a giant desert.

it’s literally so funny to me that soul eater takes place in nevada. i dont know why. i think its because it’s such a wild story about the grim reaper and witches and demons and a school where kids turn into weapons… and it just takes place in nevada

The issue I frequently come to with stuff like this is that if you homebrew D&D too much, you shouldn’t be playing D&D anymore. Yeah, D&D is great, but if you want to get REALLY far from the typical setting, to the point where you have to do more than just reskin some things and instead need to make up whole extra rulesets, is that there are probably other RPGs out there that do it better. Why not go look around and try one out? I find that the worst case scenario is that you end up feeling a little bit inspired in a new direction by something you see as you look around. (And I’m aware that money is an issue with some of them, but that doesn’t make this advice irrelevant. Especially because there are several good ones that are free.)

Reblog if you think science fantasy and guns are totally cool in D&D.

Debating with myself.

So quick disclaimer, I have only seen the first 2 episodes of Critical Role season 1 and nothing else, whereas I’ve listened to the entirety of The Adventure Zone (including listening to the Balance arc twice). So I may be just a bit biased. However, I’m pretty sure TAZ is more what you’re looking for. For starters, the audio quality in CR season 1 is pretty bad (I have a friend with auditory processing issues who enjoys CR season 2 but will never watch season 1 because they can’t put up with the audio quality). However, the audio quality is pretty good for TAZ. Also, TAZ has shorter episodes and a shorter total duration. CR season 2 currently has 26 episodes averaging around 4 hours an episode, meaning that there are about 104 hours of content just in season 2. Season 1 is much longer, there are 135 episodes I think? TAZ, on the other hand, has a little over 130 hours of content TOTAL, unless you get the bonus content from getting a Max Fun subscription (not necessary to enjoy the show). These 130 hours include liveshows, The The Adventure Zone Zone episodes, Max Fun drive bonus episodes run by the cast of a different podcast, 2 mini arcs (TAZ Commitment and TAZ Dust), and the latest new arc (TAZ Amnesty) in addition to the main arc of TAZ Balance. If you skip some of that for later to save time, you cn finish TAZ Balance sooner than you can finish CR season 2. Also, the episodes are typically 1.5 hours maximum, barring a few exceptions. The final point in favor of TAZ is that you’re a Homestuck fan. Griffin McElroy actually mentions that there are unintentional parallels between TAZ Balance and Homestuck at one point on the podcast (he’s never read Homestuck, but they share some similar themes), and TAZ has a sense of humor that will remind you of Homestuck at times (for instance, the previously mentioned The The Adventure Zone Zone episodes are their name for episodes where they discuss the plot out of character, this naming scheme reminds me of the Act Act Acts that Hussie got into).

I’m afraid to even ask this question because I don’t want to start a war, but if I only have the time/motivation to start either CR or TAZ which one would you recommend to a Homestuck fan?

Please take into consideration things that might cause issues for me:

I’m intimidated by how much I’d have to catch up on

I have bad hearing, so mumbles or low sound could cause problems

I sometimes blank out when listening to something due to focus issues

Shorter episodes might help mitigate that

Video might help mitigate that - especially if reliably captioned

A good transcript would help even more, if someone could link me to one that’s well-formatted and kept at least somewhat up-to-date

I realize neither is gonna be completely tailored to my desired adaptations, but I see all sorts of intriguing shenanigans on my dash from both series. I’d ideally like to tackle both at some point, but I’ll need to focus on just one first so I’m not as overwhelmed at having to catch up.

Reblog if you are open to answering questions and giving advice for Dungeons & Dragons or other table top games.

Feel free to put in the tags how best to contact you and maybe what games or editions you know best.

Edit: since some were a little confused, I wanted to clarify that I am not looking for advice. I’m just trying to make it known to those new to the hobby that myself and many many other people are willing to help.

They actually get to decide between +1 intelligence and +1 charisma. It's very convenient due to being able to pick the stat based on your class.

What are the Eldrain subraces like?

There is only one Eladrin subrace but they can take different forms. The have a winter, spring, summer and autumn form. They can change these forms depending on mood or other things but they don’t have to. Mechanically they are identical to the Eladrin from the DMG with the addition of a small bonus depending on their current form for their Fey Step ability.

Ed: "Did you know that I was the youngest state alchemist ever back in the days of Fuhrer Bradley? They let me into the military at 15 because I was a prodigy."

Kids: "Then why have we never seen you do alchemy?"

Ed: "I gave up the ability to do alchemy to bring your uncle back from a state of nonexistence!"

Kids: "Really dad? Really?"

Ed: Yeah I used to be missing the arm too but I got it back haha. Ed's kids: Sure thing, dad.

ED’S KIDS DON’T KNOW WHAT TO BELIEVE ANYMORE

“Dad how do you know so many important people in the military?” “I used to work under Fuhrer Mustang, i still owe him money actually” “yeah right”

“dAD HOW COME THE EMPEROR OF XING JUST CAME IN THROUGH OUR WINDOW?!” “BECAUSE I MADE HIM EAT MY BOOT AND IT CEMENTED OUR FRIENDSHIP” “WHEN WILL THE LIES STOP DAD”

An additional quality of life improvement would be to go Evocation Wizard instead of Tempest Cleric. The evocation school 14th level ability gives the ability to maximize the damage of any spell below 5th level, regardless of damage type. This means you don't have to mess around with casting this spell until you get either lighting or thunder damage (a 43.75% chance per cast). Also, considering as Sorcerer is the only class that can cast this spell, there are some nice metamagic options for this effect, namely twinned spell and distant spell. Twinned spell could essentially cause double damage due to the separate energy masses each being allowed to do damage to each target once, while distant spell would afford you greater range. Finally, along with being a halfling, the caster could pre-cast foresight on themself to give themself advantage on all attack rolls. This would mean you would have to roll 4 1s on a given attack to crit fail, or a 0.000625% chance of crit failing per attack.

Just figured out how to kill 99% of the world’s population in a single action in a single round in dnd lads

A drunk man's friends get him into a taxi and the driver asks:

"Where do you want to go?"

The drunk man replies:

"Pythons? I do not want to go there."

The driver clarifies:

"Where do you NEED to go?"

The drunk man responds:

"If I need to, then it is necessary. Let us go to the lair of pythons."

i say we start a meme where we take jokes that don’t work in other languages and translate them without explanation maybe only tagging with the original language and confuse the heck out of everyone on tumblr who’s not in on the meme like

in italian we say “prince light blue” (prince azzurro) instead of “prince charming” and i just saw a joke that in english would be “if you can’t find your prince charming, the solution is to take a random dude from the street and paint him”

Actually, I believe that the 5e leveling system only allows you to gain 20 levels which you can divide among classes as you choose. It says in the Epic Boon section in the DMG that Boons can be "given as a reward to characters who have no more levels to gain," and that boons "are only available to 20th level characters." This means that you aren't supposed to gain levels in any class once you hit 20th level, as according to the DMG you should be unable to gain levels, effectively capping you at 20.

We could technically expand the definition of a level to include a boon, as boons are meant to be given through the same means as levels (through XP or quest completion at the DM's preference). Other things, such as blessings and charms, don't typically follow this system and should probably be counted separately. The number of boons you can take varies, as boons can be used to increase your ability scores up to 30 and to acquire new feats. However, even with an excessive number of homebrewed feats and boons, most characters will never be able to have a total number of boons and levels higher than 200. This means that even with the inclusion of boons into the definition of a level, the effective level cap will only rarely pass into ranges as high as OP describes.

Taking A Question: Lvl 300+ Characters?!?

Anonymous Asks:

“What is the Highest Level you can officially achieve in 5e?”

Well Anonymous, you won’t believe it, but it’s pretty high!

And fair warning to all, this involves math, counting, unearthed arcana and stuff!

Now, in the DMG (Dungeon Master’s Guide), Page 227 it specifically says:

“As much as adventurers desire treasure, they often appreciate other forms of reward. This section presents a variety of ways that gods, monarchs, and other beings of power might recognize the characters’ accomplishments, including supernatural gifts that give characters new capabilities; titles, lands, and other marks of prestige; and boons that are available only to adventurers who have reached 20th level.”

So, taking that into account, HERE WE GO!

First, Multi-Classing into all 12 Core Classes in the Player’s Handbook and leveling in every class to level 20 means a Level 240 Character…!

And also Multi-Classing into both the Artificer and Mystic from Unearthed Arcana, and also reaching level 20, means a Level 280 Character.

That’s already VERY High Level, BUT WE CAN GO HIGHER!!!

And by gaining every Feat in the Books, and Every Racial Feat and Skill Feat from Unearthed Arcana, takes this Character to Level 343.

And using the Dungeon Master’s Guide, WE CAN GO EVEN HIGHER!!!!

By selecting all the DMG Blessings and Charms, That’s now a Level 357 Character.

And finally, by selecting EVERY SINGLE EPIC BOON in the DMG…

WE HAVE A FINAL CHARACTER LEVEL OF:

LEVEL 383!

So, theoretically, that single Character is equal to 19 Characters, all of them Level 20.

THAT’S INSANE!

So for those that would like it, we can break it down:

Highest Level with no Multi-Classing (With UA Content): 123

Highest Level with no Multi-Classing (Without UA Content): 102

Highest Level with Multi-Classing (Without UA Content): 322

Highest Level with Multi-Classing (With UA Content & Homebrews): ????

And so that’s all you need on Levels, Multi-Classing, and Maxing-Out on D&D.

And I’m sure that with all the Homebrews that exist, you could certainly reach a Level 500 or even a Level 1,000 Character!

But thanks for reading, and I hope you all liked the Math!

And remember…

HAVE FUN!!!

P.S. If anyone out there can actually calculate the Highest Level Possible, with all the Unearthed Arcana, Official Content and Homebrews, I’d LOVE to see it!

This somewhat puts a hole in my theory that it's based off of the number of characters between "What is" and "?" in "What is the meaning of life, the universe, and everything?" (Spaces don't count, commas do.) Or both could be right. Both are certainly interesting, though mine isn't nearly as poetic.
