just. remembered that this morning i had a dream where neil cicierega became a huge fan of spamton and started writing songs about him and one of them was called "silly/sad little thing" and i vividly remember that one of the lyrics was "silly little thing when i pick you up and pet your behind all the stars in the world align" and there was a music video too where he just picked up spamton and put him over his shoulder like a baby and stroked him while spamton cried tears of joy but spamton looked like this

still think it's so fun that berdly like. unironically kicks ass in the dark world. it would have been so easy to make him like, a joke boss, but nah he's really fucking strong. and you can see the inspiration and wish fulfillment in his armor but it's still pretty distinctly its own thing? and it looks good! they could have put him in some bad cosplay. the type of character he is automatically lends itself to a lot of humor and secondhand embarrassment, and toby definitely takes advantage of that, but he didn't take the easy route of reducing berdly to those jokes. i still stand by his cosine graph attack being like. the coolest attack in the game

when all the cards are down, berdly is undeniably, genuinely, stubbornly brave. it's one thing that he forces queen's control plug off after it's been loosened a bunch--the fact that he does it when it's not loosened at all? he's just pulling it off through sheer willpower and not wanting to be used as a tool to hurt these people he's coming to see as friends? wow!

but we already knew he had an insane amount of willpower. the kid forces himself through two jobs And school And no one can tell that he's struggling. the façade he presents to the world is immaculately crafted.

even still, he cares. and he cares a lot. he... misses some of his cues to step up to the plate and be a good friend, but the fact of the matter is he's repeatedly demonstrated that yeah, at the end of the day? he'll be there. even if he's a jerk sometimes. even if he doesn't always listen. he's like. insane for thinking noelle had a crush on him. but he tried to be sensitive to her feelings, you know? the last thing he wanted to do was reject and hurt her (might have saved them both a lot of awkwardness if he had Talked To Her about what he was perceiving but i digress)

like once again i have to point out that he and susie are going through very similar character arcs. incredibly hard to approach/standoffish jerk who behaves in an extremely curated manner to match the expectations of their peers and the adults in their lives, because they have nothing else left--but when shown even the smallest amount of kindness, you begin to see a glimmer of a whole new person underneath. and that kindness? they step forward to repay it in spades
