My favourite thing about spirk is that they definitely have a smart husband/dumb husband dynamic, but you never really know who’s who

But Spock still wears his uniform
There are casual fridays on the bridge.
Sulu still looks glamorous as ever, Nyota wears sweatpants and does not even try and yet she looks so hot, Chekov looks adorable with his little bowties and button ups, and Bones is all yeehaw.
Jim just started this whole thing to see Spock's ass in jeans.
My main problem with this is that nothing changes if you replace any of the women with sexy lamps. I thought this franchise was supposed to be progressive
A TOS Fan’s Honest First Review Of 2009′s Star Trek - Part 1
I had a lot of feelings about this movie, so this will be a long post! I’m splitting it into pros and cons. Remember, this is just my opinion!
Cons:
Uhura/Spock - It’s not the pairing. The execution is TERRIBLE. These two characters are not necessarily incompatible, they’re close friends throughout the original series and movies. However, their relationship in this movie makes next to no sense. Spock is a character whose whole arc is about coming to terms with his emotions. In TOS, which technically takes place after this movie, Spock only allows himself to kiss Lori after he is drugged with spores that influence his mental control. In this movie there is absolutely no context for or build up to their relationship until they’re making out in an elevator. How did she become the one person he trusts enough to show open emotion toward? Who knows, she’s barely in the movie. Also he was her teacher when they first got together. WHY?
Female Characters - As in there are no important ones. Uhura is reduced to a mere love interest who only appears when the plot needs her to comfort Spock (usually by kissing him, which solves nothing). This is a far cry from the competent and kind communications officer she originally was. While I appreciate the way the new movie shows her intelligence when it comes to languages, her skills are nearly un-utilized in any significant way. This is beyond disrespectful to a character who was a pioneer of gender and racial equality. Neither Rand nor Chapel appear in this movie, where I had hoped they might be more significant due to 21st century standards. You can have more than one speaking female character. While the original series and movies were far from perfect in the area of gender equality, somehow this movie feels worse.
Kirk and Spock - The problems with Kirk were much less, since I can understand how the death of his father and a troubled childhood might change him. I can give most inconsistencies a pass. However, I just couldn’t stand his relationships with women in this movie. While TOS Kirk has his fair share of romantic affairs with all sorts of women, he never feels like he’s harassing them. This Kirk is a different story, mostly in relation to Uhura. The first time he meets her, he aggressively hits on her- even after she makes it clear she isn’t interested. Later on, he watches her changing when she is completely unaware. Captain Kirk just wouldn’t do that. He respects women’s consent and their equality on the Enterprise- and it shows in his behavior. That is all absent here. Spock being angry and violent is probably the biggest let down this movie had to offer. While of course Spock struggles with strong emotion, that emotion is very rarely anger. Spock lets his anger get the best of him far too many times in this movie (punching Kirk I get, he was grieving, but leaving him on some random planet to die???). The peaceful, restrained, level headed, and kind character we see in the original series in movies doesn’t feel present. This is all highlighted by the fact that that version of Spock is being played by Leonard Nimoy in the very same movie.
PS This post is a criticism of the writing of the film. All of the actors worked very well with what they were given and care about the source material. The casting was very well done.
Ok but imagine Jim challenging Spock to a thumb war because he doesn’t know and Spock just awkwardly going along with it
Wait so would thumb war on vulcan be classed as foreplay or..?
All I’m saying is that if I saw “Kirk + Spock” carved into a bar table, my reaction wouldn’t be “woah, Kirk drank here?”
