after moordale closes, ola decides to return to sweden to complete college, & ultimately attends university studying psychology in stockholm. lily, meanwhile, remains in england to chase her creative dreams. the two stay together in a long-distance relationship, but the space between them leads to many challenges. though they visit each other often — especially as ola returns to england to see her father & half-sister at least twice a year on holidays — it still proves difficult to maintain their closeness. eventually, in an attempt to make sure that they are both getting the intimacy & affection they need even while they are apart, lily & ola agree to try an open relationship.

ola takes to polyamory very naturally. though there is a definite learning curve for both of them, & the transition to an open relationship requires frequent negotiation & reassurance, they are excellent communicators. eventually, the two fall into a natural rhythm & establish boundaries that make them both comfortable & happy. while they both date other people casually while far apart, lily remains ola's primary partner throughout her four years at university & three years of graduate school.

upon receiving her psychology doctorate at the age of 25, ola finally returns to england to be closer to lily. the two move in together, with jean acting as a mentor to ola as she launches her career as a youth grief counselor. while they never formally close their relationship to others, after reuniting ola & lily mostly begin to stop dating other people & focus on each other as their primary partnership.

after a few years of living together, once both of their careers have been well established & they are financially secure, ola proposes to lily. their wedding consists of an elegant ceremony held outside under a blanket of stars, & a massive, science-fiction themed reception with all their friends to celebrate their interstellar love.
