The Rose Tinted Glasses
Once upon a time there was a young prince in a castle.
The prince lived lavishly as lavish could be, but was still unhappy, but he couldn’t place why. He should be happy, but he just wasn’t. There was simply too much to frown at around him for him to feel satisfied in his life.
On a sad sunset day, a visitor knocked on the gates. The visitor claimed to know the secret to make the man happy.
The visitor came in at the prince’s request, bathed in nature’s hues.
“I know what might do the trick!” He said, clicking his strange shoes.
“Please,” pleaded the prince, “tell me how a smile can cross my temples once more.”
The visitor fetched a brilliant, shining pair of specs - a gleaming set of rose tinted glasses.
He explained that no matter where he looked with them on, he would always see the world in a new lens. And that with them on, he would finally achieve glee.
“How wonderful!” said the prince. “I will take them at once.”
He thanked the visitor, and off he went.
He couldn’t believe his eyes when he put them on. The visitor’s pitch had been true - the world was much prettier now. Wherever he saw a frown, he’d flip on the glasses and see that person was happy. A sea of dead fauna would bustle into a lively jungle. A rainy day sky would blossom into what could only be described as a heavenly expanse.
He found this new world, the world inside the tints of rose, much more favorable.
He kept them on for so long that the lie the glasses provided him became one with his own reality.
The hours he kept them on grew. Then he kept them on for days at a time. Then weeks. Then months. No one ever saw him without the glasses, but that didn’t matter, because if they were so unhappy, why would he see them?
He forgot what crying looked like.
He forgot what screaming sounded like.
He remembered only when he tried to take them off.
When he folded the pair in his hands, he saw nothing.
He heard nothing.
He couldn’t remember the visitor’s face.
No one else did.
There was no one else for him to remember.
They had left him.
But not of their own choice.
He could still feel what they left behind on his silk fingers.
He felt them trickle down, like water.
For the first time in an eternity, he frowned.
He escaped the expanse of nothingness and put the glasses back on.
He’s alone in his happiness now.
But he’s never felt better.
We have officially made it this far, my little scrinkly scrinks! happy new year everybody!
