benjamin ran a hand through his hair, letting out a slow breath as he listened to lily's words. he could only nod throughout the whole thing, absorbing what she was saying, even if it stung a little. "i hear ya, lil'. i do." he started, wishing he could say more, but deep down, he knew she was right - his job had him on the road more often than not. he was in a new city almost every week, so stability and consistency were things that hadn’t been part of his life in a damn long time.
"i get that you need somethin’ more… solid. and i ain't gonna hold it against you if this ain’t workin’." he offered a small, barely-there smile, shifting his weight like the words themselves were heavy. "but i care 'bout you. a lot. so if it’s best for you and your kid to move on... then i’ll step back. not 'cause i want what we’ve got to end, but 'cause i respect what you need."

"I need stability, I need consistency, someone to rely on and you are not providing any of those things, which is fine, but if you are not willing to give me that, you just need to stop calling me" Lily huffed, feeling absolutely exhausted. "Do you understand that?"
he couldn’t help but watch with his smirk intact, hands resting on his hips as she turned and walked away, her dramatic flair in full force - always a bit of a drama queen, that one. "well, judging by the way you're acting, it kinda looks like it does concern you." his tone was light, not missing a beat, like he was trying to show he’d already moved on since she left for the big city when her career took off. "i just swung by to see an old friend. is that a crime now?"
her eyes close softly , backing up a few steps and turning around , putting her face in her hands . she told herself she wouldn't be jealous — that if she caught word or seen him with someone else that she wouldn't let it get to her . they were better off apart , it was easier — except it wasn't . it was the lesser of two evils .
