She's so small, but Viserys is crying when he thinks she is sleeping, and it takes so much will power to force herself awake enough to roll over, sticking herself against her brother's back, grabbing his sleep shirt tight in her little fingers. Viserys stills at the feeling of little arms around him, and his breath catches in his throat as she spoke. Everything seemed more worth doing, more than just surviving, when he was reminded that he was not truly alone in the world. He had to protect Dany, as their mother had done when she was born. Mother had died to give him Dany, and he would never forget that. “Dany, pay no mind. Crying is okay.” Crying is okay, just as Mother had told him once before, when he was Dany’s own age. He dare not let her know just how badly he was struggling, what he had to resort to in order to put food in their bellies. No, Dany would never know what he had to do to keep her safe. Dany was his little dragon, and she would stay as innocent of the world for as long as he could manage.

He couldn’t lose her. She was the light of his life, the only thing in the world that had left him feeling satisfied, the one that he had never asked for more than. His QUEEN, as the rest of Westeros should have admitted to her being. Seeing the men above, knowing that saying anything would cause them to loose the arrows faster, saying anything about it would cause him to die inside. He should have insisted that she be in the air, that Meleys be there flying in once Seasmoke began his strike began.

His ax falls from his hands as he runs to her. Sand slows his feet, and he has to push past bodies. His own soldiers, members of the Crabfeeder’s men, he doesn’t pay attention to who it is he shoves from his path. All that mattered was Rhaenys.

The volley of arrows hit him as he reaches her, pulling her against him so that none of her was exposed. Each strike parted his armor, slowed enough by the steel so that it would not reach her as well. He’s still holding her in his arms as the arrows stop, still holding her as his knees give way and he falls to the ground. He coughs, finding it hard to breathe, a wheezing leaving him tells him that his lungs had been struck in the volley. “Are you alright?” he asks with what little breath is left to him.

he held his side, barely able to keep himself upright, though he did not know if it was from his lack of toes ( it had been hard to walk and balance since those had been taken from him ) or from the axe in his side. the axe that would have landed in asha’s back. he hadn’t thought he would be able to move as fast as he had, bound in chains as he was, but he had made it in time. theon, his name was theon, and asha was his sister. asha was the heir their father deserved, asha had to survive this. theon had died ages ago, and he was just a walking corpse of what he once was. for the first time in a very, very long time, he had done something truly right. he smiles as his knees sink into the snow. “ i didn’t mess up this time. “
