i think i developed more of a political compass from reading genet or the tao te ching or krazy kat or erowid than i did from reading theory. all these people read books funnelled by university presses and think they can save the world. or that they’re genuinely on the journey to understanding minoritarian struggle. it’s not even the accessibility angle for me that bothers me about theory. i don’t think the goal of language is clarity. what bothers me is that people have no concern with good writing when they publish some iteration of their phd dissertation. it’s pitiful to me that the fullest realization of one’s education in black studies or critical theory at large is a book. it feels obvious to me that the easiest way to make someone politically conscious is to appeal to their tastes in some way. thus people are radicalized through the most vulgar of their senses.
