Himiko and her Pokemons

Guys I made this sketch at like 2am, I got out of bed just to make this because it suddenly came to my head.

What if Himiko was a pokemon trainer, and what pokemons would she have? My personal choices are: Snorlax, Misdreavus, Braixen, Abra and Musharna.

I think her pokemons are a combo of magic related and also just very chill and/or lazy pokemons.

What do you guys think???

Do you have any tips to drawing Danganronpa characters (or even characters in general)? I'm practicing faces by drawing a few so I wondered if you have any advice?

Yes! A big part of character design is personality. Whenever I start drawing a Danganronpa character, or any kind of character I first try to pin down who they are. What would they do? What kind of gestures or poses would they use? What facial expressions are they more likely to pull off?

For example, take Kirumi and Miu.

Kirumi is very elegant, and controlled, she has delicate gestures and a mom like aura. She's there for everyone else first, rather than herself which makes her also a bit submissive.

Miu on the other hand is all about being attractive, and showing off her body, she thinks she's better than everyone else. She's smug and inappropiate. (There are also other layers to her personality but this is the first impression you get).

Once I have a good grasp of who they are, I usually start looking for ideas. Sometimes I have one instantly for characters I connect with, but sometimes I need to do research. There are a lot of great pose/facial expression ideas on Pintrest! I usually have a look and then combine things from multiple images in my head. Eg: Like the legs look cool there, but maybe I want them from this other angle, and with the hands like this and so on.

Another important thing when working with characters is shape. Shape and personality are very much connected when talking about character design, especially in Western art. I think it's important in anime/manga as well, but generally speaking, anime bodies are pretty much similar from franchise to franchise.

Regardless, each character has something to them that you can identify almost instantly. Ryoma? Height and spiky hat! Kaito: weird hair. Celestia: level of detail etc.

So then, when drawing a character I pick out features that I find interesting and accentuate them to enhance their personality.

For example Angie and Shuichi.

Angie has this very flowy design, that matches her carefree personality. She can also come accross as careless or reckless, so her clothes are usually all over the place. She's very much excited to dedicate herself to Atua. This is why I chose a very dynamic and exciting pose for her. She just got a wave of inspiration, her hair and clothes are just flowing around because of all her excitement to just start working on her next piece. I chose to accentuate Angie's hair because it offers her design a lot of energy and flow.

Shuichi's pose is much more reserved. It shows that he's not very confident in his body or abilities, which contrasts Angie's. He's trying to do what's right, he's a detective afterall. This is why I chose a more stiff and uncomfortable pose for him. I also chose to accentuate his eyelashes because they offer him a lot of gentleness and femininity.
