I Somehow Managed To See This During My Aeons-long Stubborn 'stay Unspoilered About Supernatural' Quest.
I somehow managed to see this during my aeons-long stubborn 'stay unspoilered about Supernatural' quest. I somehow managed to forget about it until right now. Must watch again, cuz I remember Castiel reaching what I now, having finally watched Supernatural, know to be all new levels of 'done with Humanity, done with his job, done with everything'.
Why isn't this on the BluRay with the other silliness? Thankfully Misha Collins has it on his YouTube channel. Couple of other versions up too, I see, but I think this version has the best quality picture.

Supernatural Down
After avoiding spoilers (all but one, that is!) for all this insanely long time, I've finally moved Supernatural from my to-watch list and marathoned it over the past few weeks. Just finished the S15 finale.
I wasn't sure I could follow a storyline for that long without keeling over, having limited brain capacity nowadays, but Supernatural made it easy.
Loved it! (Gimme the fic.)
New mission: Find Tumblr gifsets of all the bits that hit me hard, made me punch the air, and/or made me laugh so hard I honked like a distressed goose.

Oh...

Sad demon :( a drawing to go with my Archangel Aziraphale post
Tee hee. Chuck is God. <3 It reads like a retcon rather than a plan, despite the oddness of Chuck-the-prophet's role in things, but it's the missing thread that pulls all the others together very tidily. Love it. They're not so much breaking the fourth wall as giving up on it entirely.
So... when the Winchesters et al find out they've been the protagonists in Chuck's ongoing self-insert fanfic epic (no beta we die like the Winchesters haha lolz), repeatedly killing and dying and bleeding and losing each other for the sake of his art, do they get even? Death of the author indeed. Hallelujah! But not too soon because Rob Benedict, pls thx.
And now I know why the archangels are all so messed up and/or immature, and why the lower angels all seem like lost sheep following each other in frantic circles with the exception of Castiel, who drank a liquor store and got past the abandonment all in one go so he could look for something/someone worth fighting for and believing in.
Supernatural just went all-in for keeps on the theme of neglectful fathers, shrink-wrapping the absentee-father God who's had the angelic panties in a bunch since S4 into a form we're capable of relating to as a simple parent figure. The dad who wasn't there, the dad who got bored and left to suit himself, and watched from afar as his kids self-destructed. Metatron, who's been nothing but a self-serving ass until this ep, just viscerally and vulnerably longing for another moment in the presence of the Light, while most of his siblings didn't even get that much. Retcon that onto Gabriel and Lucifer - yowch! Chuck is the dad with the tacky Best Dad mug, which he gave himself, at his elbow as he writes a permanent, living hell of hurt/comfort/angst for his kids — and plays favourites. Eesh. Chuck makes John Winchester look good in the parenting department.
Which... I mean, speaking as a writer, the simplest counterbalance for that plotline is to show one or more of the protagonists (or even the more sympathetic antagonists) being a good parent, the hard way. Present and loving no matter what. Hmm! The morality of self-serving v. self-sacrifice played out on the family spectrum. Omnia vincit amor. To love another person is to see the face of G*d. Yiss.

I've moved on to Supernatural season 12, mildly impressed that the characters didn't dig themselves into a still-deeper hole at the end of season 11, instead relying on a new outsider to do it for them.
I loved seeing the ensemble cast come together for those last couple of eps. It made me notice that Jensen Ackles is one of those (increasingly rare) lead TV performers who stays 100% in character when the camera's on somebody else, supporting their performance with his own even if he has no lines and nothing to do but be there in the background. Quality, sir. Quality.
ETA: Castiel's character arc is quite something. He's gone from one of the most arresting and awe-inspiring character entrances I've ever seen at the start of S4, terrifying certainty, to being completely lost without a compass at the start of S12. And I know where he eventually ends up, even if I don't know what comes between now and then. It's refreshing that he just gets on with it with stoicism and minimal wallowing - all very show-not-tell. His friends seem to think he's okay as long as he's not actively going cuckoo (again), so from a fanfiction writer perspective, I'm wondering how it's possible to explore all that wonderful angst without diluting what makes the character so unique. Without making him more human to bring it to the surface. Where's the 'in' with Castiel?

Beneath the ash and the soot that flaked his face, he looked very tired, and very pale, and very scared.
