it's all in the eyes
Fanny is the "normal" daughter. She's interested in what young women are meant to be interested in. She contributes to the study of gender roles and family roles/values across both families. But yeah... not a critical person in terms of plot.
The inclusion of Fanny is very interesting to me. As far as I remember, she's not that important to any of the big plot points of the book. It could have just been John and his mother with hardly any changes. But she adds so much depth to Mrs. Thornton's character, with how she interacts with and feels about her daughter. And we hear Margaret's first kind words about the North in response to Fanny's complaints about it. Margaret sees, rightly, that all the dirt and industry of the North is what gave Fanny all the fine things she loves, and sees her lack of appreciation as wrong.
