it’s not alina’s job to fix the darkling
it’s not her job to make him a better person
he’s not some “sad lonely boy who wanted to make the world a better place”
he’s a creep and he hurt a lot of women within the series (genya, zoya, baghra)
alina is kind
alina is brave
alina is not “boring” because she chose a quiet life and wanted to take care of orphan kids (many of them probably lost their parents to the civil war)
she never wanted to be a queen
she wanted to save her country (which she did in the end)
she’s not weak
she’s a fucking badass
this has been an alina starkov appreciation post
okay bye

Melara Hetherspoon
Worms will have your maidenhead. Your death is here tonight, little one. Can you smell her breath? She is very close. (AFFC, Cersei VIII)
(She probably looks a few years older than Melara ever was but I wanted to play with an idea of what could she look like as an older teenager. I’ve always imagined her as someone pretty enough to hear that had she been of more noble birth, she would make a great match. Like yeah, Cersei’s opinions are far from objective but what’s so bad about pretty, ambitious girl? Fuck that feudal system, get that Casterly Rock, sis!)
Not to start Matthias discourse but like. He was a good person.
Is it unfortunate that his change of heart came when he fell in love with a Grisha? Yes. Is it likely that, had he never met Nina, he probably would’ve stayed violently anti-Grisha? Perhaps. We don’t really know. Maybe if he’d gotten stuck with a different Grisha after the shipwreck, things would’ve gone differently. But, in the story we’re given, Matthias is stranded with Nina. And because of him spending time with Nina, slowly but surely, his ideology changed. It wasn’t like a switch flipped and suddenly Matthias just Wasn’t Racist Anymore. It was a slow process that was hampered by being thrown into prison on Nina’s accusation without hearing her side.
Matthias is young. He’s 18. Until he met Nina, it’s likely that his only interaction with Grisha was when his family, who as far as we know, were civilians, were murdered by Grisha soldiers. After that, Brum became the only guiding force in his life, and he militarized Matthias. Anti-Grisha rhetoric and ideas were all he knew, until it wasn’t. Until he met Nina, until he learned more about her. Until he was forced to interact with a Grisha as a person and not as a bogeyman.
I also think it’s an important distinction that by Crooked Kingdom, Matthias has become comfortable around Grisha, but not with the Second Army’s high command. There’s a difference between a Grisha who’s a civilian and a Grisha who commands armies against your country.
And it’s not to say Matthias is in anyway perfect, but he’s realistic. I don’t expect him to suddenly be comfortable and nonchalant about setting up shop in Ravka. His whole life, Ravka has been The Enemy. There’s a learning curve. I do however, expect him to be willing to try and make a life there, which he was. He dreamed about killing Nina before he had the full context of why she’d condemned him to Hellgate. Before he’d seen Brum’s and by extension the druskelle’s hypocrisy with his own eyes.
