I feel like it’s worth saying that my love for humanity is a choice. My love for my own humanity is a choice.

I am constantly choosing to have hope for the goodness and the future of humanity. It’s a fucking hard choice to make, because I was raised by a pessimist and my mind instinctively turns to pessimism but I always choose optimism instead and it’s hard.

I am constantly choosing to love being human. My humanity is more of a choice than my animality. And it’s a hard choice too. Sometimes I feel like the wind is knocked out of me because I will never soar as an osprey or travel through space as my alien kintype, and my body is so wrong and I could, like many ‘kin do, turn away in disgust from humanity. But I have to choose to be human because I don’t want to be trapped in a past that never existed or a future that never will, I want to live my one life as it has been given to me. I choose to love it, because it’s the only me I’ll ever have.

Yeah, I know, not everyone can do this, not everyone has to. I just don’t want people to see me say “I love being human” and leave thinking “easy for them to say because they don’t know what it’s like to wish you weren’t.”
