from across the room

imagine: you're getting ready for the yule ball and sirius walks in, wishing that you weren't going with someone else.

content: sirius black x fem reader, swearing, kinda testosteroney jealousy ahsgshsh

a/n: the reader and sirius are close friends who are crushing on each other but they have different dates to the yule ball bc mutual pining is my drug ;) this is based on a booktok vid i saw ab this cliché, and also i hc goldstein to look like archie renaux because why not teehee

You scuffled around the room in your half-zipped up dress, frustratedly trying to locate the earrings you wanted to wear to the ball as the time rapidly ticked by.

"Where are they?" you muttered, stress straining your voice. All your other roomates had already left to meet their dates, and typical you were still only half-ready. And you knew yours, Marcus Goldstein, might be wondering where you were.

He'd asked you as soon as the ball was announced, swooping in before a considerably long line of people who wanted to ask you the same question.

Including Sirius Black, who was undoubtedly first in that line.

You, being completely oblivious to your prospects, said yes to Marcus, figuring nobody else would be interested.

"Hey, L/N!" he called as you stood in the hallway with the marauders, laughing about the ridiculously redundant poster on the wall advertising the ball that was mandatory to attend.

"Hi, Marcus." you gave him a friendly smile. The rest of the marauders rolled their eyes at him. "What's up?" you asked politely.

A smirk overtook his face that made Sirius want to barf, or tell him to fuck off, or punch him - whichever came first.

"You're gonna be my date to the ball." Marcus declared, giving a sharp affirmative nod.

"Um..." you pondered for a moment. It didn't sound like a question. "Okay?"

Your answer made each marauder quietly groan in despondence, wondering why you even wanted to endure an entire evening with him, of all people.

"Sweet. Catch you round." He winked, before turning on his heel, high-fiving a few baffled second years on his way down the corridor.

After a few moments of stunned silence, Sirius spoke up. "Why'd you say yes?" he asked, humour in his tone, but the hurt was not to be missed.

"Well," you shrugged, looking at your feet. "Nobody else is gonna ask me." you mumbled.

Sirius' heart slightly broke at that - before he could tell you that almost every person in the school wanted you on their arm, including him, Remus interjected.

"You call that asking?" He laughed. You nudged him, a weak grin on your face. You had felt immediate regret about saying yes, but you couldn't exactly revoke it now.

You tried to convince yourself it would be fun - I mean, he's definitely cute. Maybe a little dim... and not very funny... and at parties he always has too much pride to go and dance... But he asked me, so I have to go with him anyway.

Anyway, your nerves about being late were not helped by intrusive thoughts telling you your night would be indescribably boring with Marcus for a date. Though your makeup and hair was done, you still had yet to put your heels on and grab your bag, not to mention zipping up your dress and finding those damn earrings.

So when the door creaked open to reveal a certain grey-eyed gryffindor, you sighed in relief.

"Sirius..." you sighed, approaching him and spinning around so your back was facing him. "Could you zip me up? I'm so late."

You heard him chuckle behind you, amused by your stressed demeanor that he'd seldom seen before.

"Sirius, please!" you whined impatiently, pulling your hair round over one shoulder so he could see the back of your dress fully.

"Alright." He managed to say, distracted by the sight of your bare neck, shoulders, and back of the lacy bra you were wearing underneath the dress.

He smirked as you kept moving, still scanning the room for your earrings. "Y/N, hold still." He commanded, moving his hands to your hips, stilling you in place.

You froze instantly at his warm touch. Soon after, his fingers ghosted over your spine to the small of your back, which was as far up as you'd managed to get the zip on your own.

He began to pull it up, as slowly as he could prolong the moment for.

You could hardly think as you felt him breathing gently on the back of your neck, causing goosebumps to arise there that you prayed he couldn't see. He kept one hand firmly on your waist as he pulled the other upwards, watching the fabric finally cling to your body in all the right places.

"All done." he said by your ear, in a low and raspy voice.

You'd stayed put for a few moments more, your eyes even fluttering closed at the sound of his soft voice. But, you caught yourself, stepping away and turning around to face him again.

"Thank you." you smiled, before resuming your flustered preparations.

Not before long, you'd found the earrings and Sirius had found himself relaxing as he leaned on the wall, watching you with an amused smirk.

You sat down at your desk, fiddling with the backs of the dainty accessories.

Sirius was simply admiring you from across the room. He thought you looked stunning, all the efforts you'd put in during the last couple of weeks a thousand times worth it.

He was so frustrated that he didn't ask you first - next time, he knew he wouldn't be so apprehensive.

Because having you by his side would be nothing less than a privilege.

He wanted to be sure Marcus knew that, and treated you right for the night, but he knew nothing he could say would change how much of a douchebag Goldstein was.

You had noticed Sirius' observing you, doing several takes before fixing your eyes on his.

"What?" you asked in a small voice, a smile playing on your lips.

He chuckled, trying to supress it with his tongue in his cheek.

"Nothing." he smirked.

You subtly arched an eyebrow at him suspiciously, before standing up from your perch.

"Why are you still here, shouldn't you be with Emmeline right about now?" you asked, trying not to sound bitter at the mention of his date.

You had assumed that he had asked her, and that she was his plan all along. How wrong you were - she had asked him, and because his dream date already had one of her own, he accepted.

"Well..." he grinned, slipping a hand into his jacket pocket. Out of it, he pulled a long black tie, giving you a helpless look.

You neglected to stifle your laughter. "Don't tell me that the infamous pureblood heir, Sirius Black, can't tie a tie?" You giggled, walking closer to him and slipping the tie from between his fingers into yours.

"Not something I ever got the hang of." he shrugged as you turned up his collar. You tried not to squeal at the feeling of his hands on your waist again as you slipped the fabric around his neck, ignoring the close proximity of your faces.

"So, who does your school tie then?" you asked, for want of anything to say.

"Usually one of the guys, but I leave it in the knot so I don't have to ask them to do it every morning..." he trailed off, drinking you in.

Every little thing about you consumed his mind - your perfume, your eyes which followed your gentle hand movements intently, your rouged lips that were slightly parted in concentration.

He snapped out of his trance when you asked him another question.

"How come you didn't ask Emmeline to help you out?" you asked quietly.

He shrugged, feeling a lie coming. "Wanna impress her, don't I?" he said, noting your now slightly furrowed brow. "Can't have her thinking I'm incapable of doing something as simple as doing a tie."

"But... you are incapable." you joked, squinting at him confusedly as you turned his collar down over the now perfectly knotted tie.

"She doesn't need to know that." he smirked. His reasoning was completely false - he just wanted a moment with you, alone, before he lost you to a night with that Hufflepuff he hated so much.

Why him?

"Goldstein's downstairs. Saw him waiting." Sirius mentioned as the two of you just stood there, close as ever. "You excited?" he asked, rubbing soft patterns on your hips through the fabric of your dress.

His thoughts screamed at him in his head. Give me just one sign you don't want to go with him, and I'll ditch Emmeline in a heartbeat if you want me to.

But unfortunately, you merely nodded as you smoothed down the lapels of his suit jacket.

"Mhm." you hummed, not being able to meet his gaze. "I should probably, um... go down to meet him." you stuttered.

It suddenly really hurt that the gorgeous man in front of you was somebody else's for the evening.

"I mean, your tie is fixed now, and you look, um..." You struggled to find your words. "You look good." you said quickly, cringing at yourself.

But Sirius found it utterly endearing. It was adorable, how you couldn't compliment him without blushing yourself. Simply for his own amusement, he teased you.

"Yeah?" he asked softly, a smirk on his lips and in his voice as he tilted your chin up to look at him.

"Well, I mean, Em- Emmeline will like that, so." you justified, your eyes still anywhere but on his. "B-because your tie is done, and-" you tried to explian yourself. "And she'll be impressed, like you wanted... She'll think you look handsome." you told him.

"And do you?"

"Do I what?"

"Think I look handsome?" He smirked, looking you up and down and flustering you even more.

"Well, I mean... Um..."

You didn't have time to answer his question, because the door flew open. You practically leaped away from Sirius' arms, before nonchalantly walking across the room to greet your date.

"Hey, L/N." Marcus forced an impatient smile. Sirius rolled his eyes at the fact that he thought he was cool by only ever using your last name.

"Marcus! I'm sorry I'm running late, I was just about to come downstairs." you said, grabbing your bag and flashing him a smile to try and distract him from the other boy in the room.

Your efforts obviously failed - Sirius wanted his presence known. He cleared his throat, standing up tall and offering a sarcastic smile to Goldstein.

"Black." the Hufflepuff greeted him with a glare, suspicion in his voice. "What's he doing here?" Marcus then asked you directly.

The use of third person right in front of him made Sirius' blood boil.

"Oh, Siri was just, um..." you trailed off, biting your lip and looking up at your raven haired friend for help.

"Leaving." he spoke. "I was just leaving."

When Sirius moved right between you and Goldstein to get out of the door, you smiled amusedly. He gave you a quick kiss on the cheek, whispering in your ear so Goldstein couldn't hear.

"Save me a dance, beautiful."

You looked sullen when you and Marcus shortly emerged from the stairs into the common room, where Sirius was standing with the ever-loquatious Emmeline Vance.

"You look so gorgeous, Sirius." "I do just love a man in a suit." "I'm ready to dance all night long, if you know what I mean."

As his date chattered excitedly beside him, fawning over his every move, he couldn't help but watch you, from across the room. The small frown on your lips as you stood silently, with Marcus and his mates as he chatted endlessly, one overly posessive arm still around you.

Sirius knew, from when your eyes met his from across the common room, and the small smile that you gave him, that even if the both of you were going to have an awful night, you'd still have that one precious dance together.

Mmkay, one more for good measure <33 James losing his glasses and so you have to help him out with reading little things throughout the day. Like reading the instructions in potions class or softly whispering the questions on the black board for him when a professor calls on him to answer or helping him with his homework by writing the answers to the questions down for him

four-eyes // j.p.

Summary: When James misplaces his glasses you take it upon yourself to get him through the school day. Contains: Shit ton of fluff.

image

“What are you looking for, Potter?” you asked under your breath, irritated by James’s shuffling in the desk beside you.

“You know I hate it when you call me that.” he stopped to roll his eyes and click his tongue before he kept on rummaging through his schoolbag. “Can’t find my bloody glasses s’all.”

He’d been wearing them not ten minutes ago, but you knew your boyfriend. He’d probably dropped them in the halls on the way to class. Maybe if he didn’t strut around so boyishly he wouldn’t drop all of his possessions, you thought to yourself with a chuckle. You were in Transfiguration at the moment, and you couldn’t just stop taking notes to help him look, so you offered the next best thing. “Don’t worry Jamie, you can copy my notes later.”

James was visibly flustered, but your offer clearly got you his full attention.

“Oh, no, peanut. It’s alright, I’m sure they’re just in here somewhere.”

“Mr. Potter?” Mcgongall beckoned. “The answer to number 2, please.”

You didn’t need to look to know James was internally giggling at the mention of number 2, so you gently elbowed him back to reality. Only the reality was he couldn’t see a thing that was written on the blackboard before him.

“It says ‘which of these is not a type of transfiguration?’”, you whispered to him discreetly, “’Enchantment’, -”

“Enchantment!” James blurted out, and you honestly weren’t sure if he was right or not, seeing as you’d only listed the first of four options. But your worries soon vanished when Minnie gave him a look of approval and went on with the class.

“Thanks, love.” he muttered to you, smiling uncharacteristically shyly, and you swore you saw him blush out of the corner of your eye.

image

You’d had nearly no time to properly search for James’s glasses in between classes, and you found yourself having to haul him over to Potions to make it on time.

“Love?” you heard him peep as you set your things down and got comfortable. Flitwick had provided you with a list of ingredients and instructions for the day’s potion.

“Yeah, Jamie?”

“I-I can’t quite make out the instructions.” you turned and watched as his brows furrowed, squinting to decipher the print. You felt a bit bad, but you also couldn’t help but marvel at how precious he looked in this moment, hair in disarray after anxiously running his hand through it and cheeks flushed.

“What?” he asked, and you realized you’d been staring. You couldn’t fight the smile that broke across your face.

“Nothing, you just look so cute when you squint like that.” you teased, playfully punching his arm and taking the parchment from his shaky grasp. “Hand it over, four-eyes. You’re blind as a bat.”

“Not blind enough to miss the way you can’t stop ogling at me, poppet.” he fired back, flashing the trademark cheeky grin that seemed to be forever plastered onto his face.

“Now, now, Potter.” you clicked your tongue, “I think thanks are in order since I am the one helping you.”

“Oh, please. We both know you’re going to milk as many trips to Honeydukes as you can out of this.” he scoffed and you turned towards him, amused and sensing he had more to say. You were proven right as he affected a high pitched voice and girly demeanor. “Oh, Jamie. Remember that time you couldn’t find your glasses and I helped you all day? Come on, now, buy me some candy.”

“Merlin, do I really sound like that?” you rolled your eyes at his exaggerated impression, and soon felt two strong arms winding around you, hot breath hitting the back of your neck.

“No, peanut, You sound lovely.” he sighed, pressing a sweet kiss to your neck and going back to stand at your side. “Now what does it say here, dove?”

image

Your last class had finally come to an end and though you didn’t mind a whole day of holding James’s hand a bit tighter than usual as you steered him through the sea of students, you reluctantly set off with James in tow to search for his misplaced glasses.

“Where was the last place you had ‘em?” your voice echoed through the now empty castle corridor as the last of your peers shuffled out.

“I don’t know!” James whined, head thrown back and eyes screwed shut as he pinched the bridge of his nose.

“Don’t you want to find them, James?” you asked, not expecting the playful glint in his eyes when they opened and met your own.

“Don’t know, angel. I think I like you lugging me around and whispering in my ear a little more than I should.” he tugged you closer to him and let you wrap your arms around his neck. “Don’t you?”

“Maybe a little.” you whispered breathily in his ear, causing a shiver to travel down his spine.

“Oi, Prongs! How much longer have I got to hold onto your bloody glasses, mate? You gave ‘em to me at the end of Minnie’s class, take ‘em back already! I can’t handle this responsibility!” Sirius hollered from the end of the hall. You pulled your head out from the crook of James’s neck, flashing him an accusing look similar to the one he was currently giving Sirius.

“I’m sensing tension!” Sirius squeaked before making a run for it, disappearing around the corner.

“You found them in Transfiguration?” you crossed your arms and gave him what you hoped was a stern glare. “And you let me help you all day?”

“Yeah.” he peeped, not daring to take his eyes off his shoes. “Just liked the attention.”

You couldn’t bring yourself to be mad at that face. Not when his lip was jutted out like that and his brows furrowed so. You brought a gentle hand to his cheek and gave him a tender peck.

“It’s okay.” you said calmly, before giving him a barely there smack on the head and chuckling. “Alright, now it’s okay.”

James gave you a deeper kiss this time. “Sorry about that, peanut. But I think I should hunt Sirius down now and get ‘em back. Don’t think I can go much longer without getting a proper look at you.”

Before you had a chance to respond, he was bolting down the hall, making a turn in the wrong direction, however.

“Other way, James!”

“Right!”

Y/N sometimes hated being a Slytherin.

She hated the fact she couldn't kiss her boyfriend in public without being hated on or the fact she could get disowned for even being in the same area as Potter.

Her boyfriend, Harry James Potter.

No one knew the two were dating, no one knew about the fact Y/N and Harry Potter were currently sat in an empty broom closet, Harry's hands in Y/N's hair as her's were wrapped around her neck.

The two couldn't get enough of each other, and when they could they would meet in secret places.

Often broom closets with a certain silencing and locking spell.

"Hmm," Harry whispered out, his head being thrown back slightly and a rough breath left his slightly swollen red lips as Y/N's lips ran their tongue across the nape of his neck.

"W-We have to get to class," Harry mumbled, the girl let out an annoying huff and lifted her head to meet his eyes.

It was dimly lightened in the closet, she could only make out the ends of his eyes which sparkled through the lens of his crooked glasses.

She smiled at her boyfriend of nearly a year and softly moved her hands to his glasses, fixing them slightly.

A light blush coated his cheeks of her hands softly grazing his skin.

"Even after all these years, I can still make you blush?" Y/N smirked, one that Harry could barely make out in the darkroom.

"You just have that effect on me I guess," Harry shrugged, his blush growing larger as he fixed the collar of his shirt to cover the slight hickey growing on his neck.

"Good to know," she smirked, "I like how I can make you blush."

Harry rolled his eyes, his hands moving to her waist, his warm fingertips grazing against her cold waist from the blouse of her school shirt which had been lifted slightly.

"Look who's blushing now," Harry held a cocky grin as he noticed the slight red cheeks coating the Slytherin girl.

"Oh shush Potter."

The two found themselves running to Potions class moments later, already knowing they would be late.

"Okay- I'll go first and you come back in a few moments?" Y/N said sternly to Harry who nodded.

She sighed and opened the door which made everyone turn to her with a confused look.

"Sorry sir," she said to Professor Slughorn who was smiling at her, "Sorry for being late."

"No worries, just take a seat dear," she instantly rushed over to her friends, taking a seat next to Daphne Greengrass as Pansy, Blaise and Draco sat across from her.

"Where were you?" Pansy hissed at the girl who shrugged and fixed her collar.

"Just late to class."

Their attention turned to Harry who had just walked through the door and taking a seat next to Ron.

"Why was Potter late," Draco grumbled, Y/N couldn't help roll her eyes.

"Why? Curious if your boyfriend is cheating on you?" Daphne shot at the blonde making all the other's laugh, Y/N more like a forced.

"I do not like Potter."

Daphne raised an eyebrow and turned her head to see Harry Potter already looking there direction, he winked their way. But it was clear as the night sky who it was directed to.

Daphne smirked and turned back to Y/N, "No, but I think Potter likes someone."

Y/N only gulped and sighed.

Fred was most definitely a flirt. You knew that, George knew that, hell, your entire year knew that. Still, that knowledge didn’t take away from the fact that you got butterflies every time it happened.

You had been friends with the Weasley twins ever since your first year at Hogwarts. It was actually George and you who became fast friends, then you warmed up to Fred and his more outgoing nature.

In that time, it’s safe to say you harbored a bit of a crush on the older twin. Sometimes with all the flirting you two do, you even consider that he may feel the same way back towards you. Most times you brush it off for a more realistic idea that he’s just a natural flirt, which he is.

“Y/n!” George shouted from across the great hall. He and Fred excitedly waved you over to them.

You chuckled, and brought your dinner over to where they sat. Fred moved over a seat, and patted the spot between him and his brother.

“You know I would have made my way over here eventually, right?” You teased as you sat down. “You can never get rid of me.” You lightly bumped shoulders with the twins as they chuckled.

“Thank Godric for that,” Fred sighed, “who else would do my potions homework for me.” He smirked at you and shoveled a piece of toast into his mouth.

Adored (James Potter)

Word Count: 0.5k

Summary: Loving James Potter is truly magnificent; being loved in return is even better

A/N: Second segment of my Tales of Love Writing Collection. No warnings, just wax poetic, tooth-rotting fluff! No reader pronouns.

Loving James Potter was warm.

His voice was honey, smooth and robust, whispering into your ear like truths shared between 3 a.m. lovers. His arms were strong and benevolent, and he held you in a way that contradicted his raw power and muscle. His hair was a rich brown, almost golden in the direct sunlight, and framed his striking, tan face in a way that made da Vinci’s work seem elementary.

You had met at the beginning of September, the heat of summer still lingering in the air. His companionship was constant throughout your years at Hogwarts, and you never seemed to find yourself without thoughts of the bespectacled boy.

Years after graduation, you still managed to find new reasons to admire your counterpart. His geniality was more than a passing phase, and his smile was something that you dreamt of nightly.

James felt the same way; He talked about you ardently with anyone that would listen, and he often thought of what the future would bring to your whirlwind romance.

You had never felt more at home than beside James, his presence washing over you like a warm, sluggish tide and his hand gripping yours, anchoring you to reality. With James by your side, you felt like you could accomplish anything; with his reassurances filling your ears, nothing was out of the question.

Loving James Potter was passionate.

James looked at you as if you had been made from the same soul, split into two and meant to wander through time and space in search for each other.

You could be content in spending the rest of your days observing James in his natural state, his skin warm and his cheeks tinged with their typical blush.

He had a natural beauty about him, and you couldn’t help but wonder if he had been crafted by a higher source just for your admiration. Your own personal Adonis, as you often called him.

The two of you had gravitated around each other for so long, that your collision was a blinding intensity that paralleled only the most famed romances.

If it were up to you, everyone would know of your adoration for James. You wanted to shout from the mountaintops until the avalanches tumbled down. You wanted to sing in the open courtyards until the seasons changed and the rain drowned you out.

You wanted to yell and clamor and whisper and murmur until your lungs were tired and your voice was lost in the wind. What other use did you have for it, anyways?

Loving James Potter was simple.

The way you stand. The way your fingers fit between his. The way your nose crinkles when you think too hard. Those were James’ truths.

There was something effortless about the candor you shared; You could speak freely about any topic and James would listen intensely, thoughtful in every interaction.

Life was a kaleidoscope; muddled, connected, everchanging. But you made things a little more manageable.

James had always been a worrier, agonizing with vehemence over details that went unnoticed by most. You soothed his mind in a way that he never thought possible. Your presence could alleviate his deepest concerns and comforted him in his worst anguish.

Whatever force had brought you to him, James would be forever thankful of their sage ruling. Nothing was truer than the bond you shared and the way he felt. However long you had together, James would surely spend his time in appreciation of your zealous magic.
