I feel like there's plenty of times where John feels skeptical or awkward about dating someone as young as Gale, he still goes to college, is barely above the legal age of adulthood, and has his life set out for him now that he's out of a bad home situation

and John's almost 40, hitting his middle years of life and has a good thing going for him, doesn't think he has much more time to explore new things. When he sees Gale on campus with his friends he almost feels bad that he may be preventing Gale from forming a bond with someone who has much more in common with him than John. Gale always tells him that he will love John no matter what, but he still feels a little bittersweet about it

John also drinks, which causes a lot of issues between the two. Both Gale and John both know that John will never do what Gale's father did to him, but it still sometimes causes arguments between the two. John will sometimes beg Gale to just speak up for himself, to tell John to stop and he'll stop, but Gale doesn't want to get in the way of John's routine.

he sometimes thinks he fails Gale, he gets hurt on campus or someone is mean to him and John will question his ability to protect Gale at all, will apologize profusely and talk about how he's failed him and how he's a terrible boyfriend, and Gale will have to tell him that anything away from his family is better, and being with John is the best

it doesn't happen often, but when it does Gale will always tell John about he's forever grateful that he rescued him from the terrible home situation he was in, and he will love John no matter what
