Leap of Faith ~Ch. 2~

(A/N: I know, I know this took forever. And as always half the credit belongs to @pro-procrassie , my coauthor and pal.)

The lights on the ship went up at exactly 9 a.m. as usual. Marion opened her eyes slightly so as to ward off the unwanted attack of the piercing rays. The first thing that caught her eye was the unflinching figure of David still lounging on the chair a few feet from her bed, in the same position she had seen him in as she fell asleep last night. Albeit, it wasn’t her who had his attention but the ceiling rather. This was beyond Marion. She had never felt as awkward and low in her entire life as she did in this one moment. This man (let’s just roll with it, Marion thought to herself) “got” her pregnant the day before, so to speak. He absolutely insists that she is to do everything in his presence. He sits in the same room she sleeps in, watching her. And now as she opened her eyes to welcome the woes of another day, Marion found that this is indeed her reality. That she is bound to this man for the next 9 months or so. That this is the sight she will wake up to everyday for the next several months. And Marion felt small. She felt it in her bones. She felt humiliated; although to his credit, David conducted himself respectfully the day before, that Marion couldn’t disagree with.

As she lay in bed, still thinking about how to actually alert him to her presence, Marion felt uneasy. Nausea came over her and she felt like she could throw up, but not quite. Marion sat up straight in bed, unable to tolerate the nauseating feeling anymore. David quickly turned his attention towards her. Marion held her stomach with one hand and gently massaged her chest with the other.

“What is it?” David finally spoke. David was looking forward to greeting her with a good morning upon her wake but this was the response the situation presented itself for now.

“I feel like throwing up but nothing’s coming.” Marion tried to explain her exact feeling at the moment.

“Alright, let’s get you up. Let’s get you walking. See if you can act on it.” David held Marion’s hand and helped her out of the bed.

Marion complied. As soon as her feet hit the cold hard ground, Marion felt her legs wobble a little. But it was nothing she couldn’t handle. She tried to walk to the other end of the room to get to the lavatory. David no longer held her hand but had placed his gently on the small of her back. Marion opened the door to the lavatory and maybe it was the quaint smell that occupies every bathroom in existence or what exactly Marion didn’t know, but as soon as the door swung open she felt her head spin and her stomach churn and she went in straight for the commode, burying her face in it, and started emptying her insides as if on cue.

David was none too surprised. It was morning sickness after all. He crossed the small distance between the door and where Marion was crouched on the floor and proceeded to gather her hair in his hands and rub her back in the process. Marion couldn’t have been throwing up for more than a minute or two but by the time she was done it felt like she had been to hell and back. David helped her stand up and wash her mouth.

As he left Marion in the bathroom and stepped outside so she could take a moment in there, David felt almost pleased. No, he did feel pleased. He felt pleased with himself. He felt as if he passed the first test in the way of becoming a responsible father, however minor the test may have been. David surely knew more than any human about what to expect further in the pregnancy. And he read and researched about everything else that he might possibly have missed yet. David was prepared. He was more than prepared. He would be a thousand times better as a father than any of the human males, that David was certain of.

He wasn’t squeamish. He wasn’t insensitive. He didn’t shy away from the natural process of human procreation. He wasn’t afraid. He wasn’t weak. He wasn’t a ‘man’ and that was a good thing. David would be a better father and a better companion to his pregnant subject than any human could ever hope to be. David wasn’t a man and that was a good thing. Yes, it was very good indeed.

Marion grew more ill as the day went on. She had never been pregnant before this but doubted this was typical. The onset of morning sickness could vary but it seemed awfully early to feel quite so bad. Marion vomited until nothing but bile came up and her gut ached. David insisted she go to bed.

She rose from the toilet, swaying on unsteady legs. David gently grasped her shoulders until she found her feet.

“Easy now. The early stages of pregnancy are a delicate time.”

He led her back to bed, a hand on her elbow the entire way. Marion crawled under the covers and though she had little more to hack up, having a trash can or something on standby would be a comfort. She didn’t want to try and hobble to the bathroom if another bout of nausea struck.

“Can you uh…get me a bucket? Just in case.”

“Of course. I’ll bring a basin and something to settle your stomach. Can I trust you to behave while I’m gone?”

Marion gave an indignant scowl. “Do I look like I’m planning on causing trouble?”

“Certainly not.”

With a curt nod David left for the kitchen.

Marion could watch a movie or read a book from Covenant’s immense library, instead she chose to curl up and think. A horrible decision really. Her mind wandered to her fellow colonists. She had no doubt David would kill them all. Thousands of souls. Marion would remember that. She would have to. She would have to remember because when David’s hand left her arm she realized she missed it. How fucked was that? There was no time left to ponder this dilemma as David reappeared with a stainless steel bowl and a bottle of something amber hued and bubbly.

He placed the bowl on the floor beside Marion. He then uncapped the bottle and gave it to her. She sniffed the contents and set it aside. Ginger ale.

“Sip it slowly. Is there anything particular you would like to eat?”

The very idea of food made Marion want to gag but passing on meals would only make her sicker.

“I don’t care. Something bland.” She mumbled and rolled over.

David pulled the blanket up around his charge’s chin and smoothed a few wrinkles out of the fabric.

“Oatmeal should suffice. I’ll make it right away.”

Once more, David turned to leave but paused when he heard his name called.

“David?” Marion breathed, sounding small, almost childlike.

“Yes.”

“Are you gonna keep your word? You won’t hurt me?”

The synthetic tensed. He was many things but he wasn’t an oath-breaker. They had an agreement and he would stick to it.

“As I said before: I won’t allow you to come to any harm. You are safe.”

He left without waiting for a reply and Marion was once again alone with her thoughts. She asked the question not out of fear, but a need to convince herself. Taking her had been cruel, what David had planned for the colonists was worse still; but he had also been caring and even kind. It was nice to be looked after. Marion touched the spot on her forehead where David had kissed her and she recalled Shaw, Walter and the others for whose deaths David was responsible. He was mad, he was a killer and she must hate him.

She closed her eyes, drifting off without her meal. Her last thought was of that kiss.
