so i found a translation of Plato’s Symposium because i heard he shipped achilles and patroclus and i was like “nice”.
and the first time i read it i was like “no, plato, Achilles totally was totally in love with Patroclus, what even are you trying to prove” and then i was like “but why can’t they both love each other” and THEN I REALIZED
“plato isn’t talking about love”
“PLATO IS NOT TALKING ABOUT LOVE"
“that sneaky bastard”
to clarify, i realized that “lover” and “beloved” are not used here as we use them today.
if you’re still confused, replace “love/belove” with f*** and “in love with” with f***ing
Plato is saying that Achilles is the “beloved” in the relationship (wink wink) because he is more beautiful, and unbearded, and younger than Patroclus (note- in Plato’s time, it was common for older men to take younger men as- for lack of a better word- boy toys. This social phenomenon is known as pederasty. in this, the older male is the “erastes” and the younger male is the “eromenos”. Erastes means “lover”, from the verb eran, to be in love with. Eromenos means “beloved” from the same verb. So yeah, Plato’s argument was that Patroclus topped.
hence the url
(The important thing is that Plato thought Achilles and Patroclus were gay as f*** and Achilles’ love for Patroclus was more the reason for his acceptance into the isles of the blest than his heroic deeds goodbye friends I am gone)
