Tom Sassing His Brothers Is My Favourite Thing.

Tom sassing his brothers is my favourite thing.

"Sonny was white-faced with anger. “That’s easy for you to say, it’s not your father they killed.” Hagen said quickly and proudly, “I was as good a son to him as you or Mike, maybe better"

From The Godfather novel by Mario Puzo.

"He was the civilian” in this war, Michael thought wryly. And they’d have to give him a hell of a lot better medals than he’d gotten in World War II to make him join this one. Thinking this made him feel guilty about not feeling more sympathy for his father. His own father shot fall of holes and yet in a curious way Michael, better than anyone else, understood when Tom had said it was just business, not personal. That his father had paid for the power he had wielded all his life, the respect he had extorted from all those around him."

From The Godfather novel by Mario Puzo.

Tom Hagen might not be the "muscle end of the family" as Sollozzo put it but honestly he's a badass in his own way. He's abducted by Sollozzo and his men and taken to a warehouse somewhere where he's told without ceremony, that his "boss" is dead. That boss is also his Father, the man who is responsible, along with Sonny, for saving his life and giving him a home and a family. He has to process a family member's death while in a hostage situation, knowing he might be killed and trying to keep it together to listen to what Sollozzo wants him to do.

He's told that he can go, that he can live if he tries to get Sonny to make a deal then five minutes later he's informed that his Father is still alive, if badly wounded, but that news means that he's now disposable and he's going to be killed. He goes through so many emotions and so much in a short space of time and though he's completely terrified he's still able to pull together all of his lawyer skills, everything he's learned as a Consigliere and his intelligence and lie, plead, cajole and coax one of the most ruthless gangsters ever into allowing him to live.

Then when he returns to the Corleones he doesn't take time to feel sorry for himself or to recover from his near death experience, he goes straight into business mode and spends hours giving them every detail of the negotiations and helping to make plans.

Does anyone else love noticing new tiny details every time they watch a movie?

The Godfather is so good for this.
