what if marvin and mendel were high school friends and mendels "psychiatrist" title is a sort of metaphor for the the role he plays in marvins life. so when trina asks mended to speak with jason she's really asking mendel because he was marvins friend in high-school so he should probably know him best thereby would know how to help marvin and subsequently jason, marvins son.

also when "marvin hits trina" mendel seems knows how to deal with marvins outbursts or "giddy seizures". (what if "marvins giddy seizures" the song from *in trousers* is supposed to be sung by mendel??)

More falsettos headcanons I pulled out my butt/made up on the spot

-anytime whizzer walks past Marvin that ass is getting a slap. Everytime

-all of them would love little shop of horrors. I am projecting

-Trina can paint. She’s an amazing painter say it TRINA IS AMAZING AT PAINTING. I HAVE A FUCKING GUN TO YOUR HEAD. COMPLIMENT HER FUCKING PAINTING

-I’m saying this again because it’s oh so special to me but Marvin plays piano he tried to teach Jason but Jason did not give a single fuck

-Cordelia has those weird aunt wall decors that say something like uhh eat with big fork and spoon behind the word eat in cursive

Sobbing (relistening to falsettos) and just thinking of all the implications a short phrase in Jason’s Bar Mitzvah.

“Son of Marvin, Son of Trina, son of whizzer, son of mendal, and godchild to the lesbians from next door” honestly sent me into a spiral and led me to tears

Naturally Jason is the son of Marvin and Trina (and step son to Mendal), but for his relationship with whizzer to be referred to as that of father and son and not l friends, as it is treated/allueded to in the rest of the musical just makes my heart ache. Jason never referred to whizzer as a father figure and in no way would it be really recognized by and outsider as a father son dynamic, they aren’t related and it’s not like whizzer actually adopted him or became his step dad like mendal did. And yet it their relationship is highlighted before Jason and mendal’s.

“And godchild to the lesbians from next door” this is obviously a decision made by Marvin and we don’t know when it happened, it could’ve happened when he wasn’t in a good place inbetween acts and wanted to ensure Jason would have someone or it could’ve been off screen sometime after Whizzer became ill. It was obviously a decision that Trina also approved of or at least knew about before mendal saying it. And maybe for similar reasons she was ok with having charlotte and Cordelia as his god mothers.

Would Trina honor the split custody even after Marvin died? Just sending Jason to spend time with charlotte and Cordelia to honor Marvin’s memory and stuff? Or would they just become more like fun aunt’s that would take him out sometimes, I mean we know they frequently went to his baseball games afterall.

Anyways I’m crying. I love this musical, never fails to make me cry

Falsettos is my favorite musical and I've lost count of the times I've seen it, but for some reason it just hit me that when Marvin says "I left my kid, I left my wife, to be with you", it's a direct answer to Whizzer's "All your life you wanted men, and when you got it up to have them, who knew it would end your life?"

Because Whizzer is talking about AIDS. He's been an openly gay man for much longer, he's been with other men, and he knows how repressed Marvin was. So, he's commenting on how tragic it is that now that Marvin allowed himself to enjoy this, they'll both end up dead.

But Marvin knew he'd lose his life for this. He had a tight knit family, perfectly patriarchal, and he put it all on the line in the name of Whizzer's affections. And they're both stubborn and they're both drowning in toxic masculinity and so neither of them actually admitted this simple truth: Whizzer was afraid of loving Marvin because he thought all he wanted was sex.

It takes Whizzer's death for them to finally fix their greatest misunderstanding. Finally Whizzer says "I'm sorry it's over, now that you could have the sex you wanted", and Marvin replies "It wasn't the sex, it was you. I'd end my life again if it meant I could live with you. I did it before already".

And I'd like to believe that I'd do it again, and again, and again.
