Hey folks 👋. Here’s more from that silent graphic novel I had to make for my graphic novel class. I said in the last post that I’d explain this a bit, so here goes (TL;DR at the end):

In class we read “God’s Man” by Lynd Ward, a silent graphic novel about an artist who sells his soul for a magic paintbrush. (Fantastic gn btw, I recommend it). After that we were assigned to make our own silent graphic novel (no words) that followed a popular phrase/saying, so I chose “love conquers all” and ofc used Basil and Dorian. But I interpreted the phrase in a more “love wins” kind of way. My graphic novel begins with the two walking around London when a man notices they have their arms linked. He proceeds to bash them for it so they leave, not wanting to cause any trouble. The next panel shows Basil in his studio painting and the painting is of him and Dorian in a flower field. The painting is then hanging up in an art gallery for people to see. Gallery-goers notice that the painting depicts two men in a very affectionate way…and the painting gets torn down and destroyed. In heavy dismay Basil makes his way home to Dorian and is lovingly comforted. The two images show the beginning of the graphic novel (Dorian & Basil walking around) and the very end of it (Dorian comforting him).

I kinda wanted to show that love wins no matter what you may endure. In the comic they both endured some slander from folks who aren’t very accepting, but at the end of the day despite what happened, they have each other. Kinda cheesy I know but I really didn’t want to do “don’t judge a book by its cover” lol 🤷‍♀️. I am not gonna post the other panels of this comic bc they’re ugly so don’t bother asking for ‘em. I’m only posting the pretty ones. Even then these were rushed and aren’t my best effort 💀. I’ll post something pretty eventually lol. Either way I hope you like it?? I had fun making it

TL;DR: Made a silent graphic novel for class. These are the beginning & ending panels (some other panels are in another post). In the gn Basil and Dorian experience homophobic shit but in the end they have each other so yay 🙌

dorian only thinks his portrait is beautiful because he sees it as a depiction of his fleeting youth and identity, but the truth is the portrait is actually a reflection of basil, the artist, who put too much of himself in it. it’s not dorian who is beautiful, but rather basil’s pure love for him, which in turn is a reflection of basil’s soul and true nature. by loving dorian, and embracing his love through art without shame, basil has created the most precious thing, even if it is fleeting. much like romance, all art is quite useless, but it touches the human spirit nonetheless, and that’s important
