Why are so many people against Gabe being an ex-cop?? Is it cuz of ACAB?? What’s the issue, I’m GENUINELY curious. If anything, it fits his character just fine. I could see Jack being an ex-cop too (Ik he’s not, but the role wouldn’t be far fetched).
Also many people have made good points about how he noticed Sombra manipulating him but not Akande and how Bap learned his lesson of how bad being a gun for Talon was much faster than Gabe. He was a Commander of a covert ops division for the largest/most popular organization dedicated to keeping peace (even if they screwed up here and there) and they downgraded all those years of experience just to play into Akande’s hands (I think).
I personally liked the story, but for having read all the comics there were still things I didn’t catch and or get that other people saw.
What I got from the short story was that he has good (ish) intentions, but he’s going about it in the “wrong” way. He’s tried playing by the rules, even if Blackwatch had more flexibility, but as he said—all systems are flawed. He’s resulting to his last option or what appears to be his last option, enforcing justice no matter the cost. I did appreciate the fact that he questioned whether or not what he was doing was right and how that voice in his head said that he didn’t have to do this, reading the name tags of the corpses that littered the hallways of the base showing us what humanity he has left.
A man in a state of constant rage at his past and at himself while trying to solve the world’s biggest problem—injustice. Injustice for those who have been wronged and for those whose justice has been stripped from them by force while at the same time, remembering moments where he was at peace, life was bearable, he was happy, and he had all he could’ve ever wanted. And yet this path that he’s chosen to go on pushes those moments away and refocuses his thoughts back to his objective.
Justice can’t exist while the corrupt, evil, and power-hungry reign. Especially when forces out there that try to put an end to the problem really aren’t doing all that they could to help.
In regards to Cole Cassidy’s introduction, I’d like to say something to the people who are going to refuse to change, think this is ridiculous or some distraction tactic by Blizzard that doesn’t solve anything.
I am someone who has suffered from PTSD as a result of childhood trauma. If you don’t know, PTSD is an anxiety disorder that is common in victims of SA, but it’s more often than not associated with war veterans.
I’d like to give an example of how something as small as a name could have a huge impact.
I am a big fan of the MCU and when I learned that Tony Stark’s first name was Anthony. I felt a weird (and irrational) sensation of pain and betrayal. It was a moment where I felt my heart stop and ache in pain. Why you ask? That was the same name of the man that ruined my childhood. That ruined me and threatened to hurt my mom in violent fights that involved the police on several occasions. I was suddenly brought back to all of that just by hearing his name. I am a logical person. I know that the two are completely unrelated but that small link is enough to make me pause, to make my breath hitch in my throat and my heart race.
Cassidy is different, his previous name was after this man because people thought that man was so great that he deserved it. To be immortalized in one of Blizzard’s most successful properties. Some of the players may not know that but the people that work at Blizzard know it. The victims know it and to hear his name screamed and shouted in Overwatch league with cheers and excitement, in videos on YouTube, on Twitch, in countless amounts of merchandise. It might feel inescapable for them.
The character and the awful man that committed those atrocities are not the same person. Not in personality, appearance, or anything but they do have the same name and having that name continued to be associated with positivity must be heartbreaking for the victims.
I support Cole Cassidy’s name change. I know that this does not fix anything that has happened. This does not compensate for the awful experiences and memories the victims are left with but I feel like it is a nice gesture in the very least and I feel like it’s incredibly insensitive and selfish to not follow the change because “I don’t like it” or “the other was better”
I love how in the Reunion cinematic, Ashe is her typical, head-strong, stubborn self and then in the aftermath she’s upset with herself cuz she didn’t get rid of Cass when she had the chance.
I just think it’s cute how she has a soft spot for him regardless of being a traitor and leaving the gang. They played important roles in each other’s lives when they were younger.
Ashe: I should’ve put a bullet in’em when I had the chance
BOB: *rolls eyes*
Ashe: *notices* What? Got somethin’ to say Bob?
BOB: *internally* you didn’t on purpose you softie, but thank God for that. I still like him 😌

My fav Commander (sry Jack, I still like u tho). Also, it was probably Jesse lol.
I also used a different brush than what I normally use just to test it out. Probably better for sketching, but I like it.
